Deserves its own thread :bat:

Made for Luna Rose by one Cornelius Hobbs

Spiritus Magnus

a small Spirit board/Table

Ornate Victorian cherry wood construction. Authentic real brass corners and four little brass rosettes, one on each side.

One of the rosettes is a button that allows a large partitioned drawer to be released.

The drawer will hold Tarot decks, the planchette, and several bizarre items of your choice.

Spiritus Magnus will come with a hand made planchette and a small spirit bell.

Oh yeah, it has a monster "Death Coil" capable of blowing things right off the board (courtesy of creative genius Tim Wisseman)

Built by Karl Feret master wood worker and builder of both Cabinet de los Muertos and The Departed.

Can't tell scale from the picture, but the letters (especially the numbers) seem awfully close together. could they be spread out? maybe the corner designs could come out from under the brass corners? what is on the other side of the brass? felt?

very exciting!

$375.00 plus shipping

My margin is very small on this, like The Departed I like to keep the price as reachable as I can. This should easily sell for $475

Each table is hand made along with the planchette and the spirit stand and of course custom werks by Tim Wisseman.

First off: It's a ouija Board box 15X15 that has a draw to hold other things. It can also ring a spirit bell when one is placed on it and it can throw items off the top of the table, sending them flying into the room.

I do not see it on your web site.
How deep is it.
Does it come with a cloth, velvet or leather bag?
How far out does the drawer come out?

Nice,

Hi Dick. It's not on the site yet.

The table is 2 inches thick and the drawer fills most of the inside. Drawer is 10 inches wide and 9 inches long 1 1/2 inch deep.

The drawer will hold the planchette and many accessories, including tarot decks, rune stones etc.

Pray do tell us more about the extras?
Message: Posted by: Roth (Jan 15, 2010 11:23pm)
There will be additional items that can be purchased separately or in a package.
I don't have prices yet.

1. Wissemann aged wood flash pot-

2. Gaffed quill-

3. Karl Feret wood runes (gaffed) "reading" stones that can be stacked into a pyramid . The stack collapses on command by either "spirit forces" or your telekinetic power

4. Small candle

5. burned piece of "angry" wood from a witch burning in the 17th century

Message: Posted by: bootsbrisket (Jan 17, 2010 5:53am)
My, this is absolutely beautiful. The drawer is a brilliant idea - it provides a perfectly good reason for the thickness of the board.
By my estimation, the circle of letters is roughly around 8 inches by 8 inches, is this correct? At first that concerned me, but after printing out that section of the picture (after resizing it to scale,) I could see how that could work just fine. Is the planchette smallish or a special design for smallish letters close together?
Message: Posted by: Roth (Jan 17, 2010 2:36pm)
We're working on the planchette size. Karl's main goal is to make the planchette jump straight up a few inches off the table :)

With the Spirit bell, Offering box (flash pot), Spirit sticks and shimmed accessories, the Spiritus can be presented with minimal "ouiji" presentation involved if you like.

I'll be posting the accessory list later (final list)

Posted: Jan 17, 2010 5:12pm
These are the accessories for the Spiritus (Devils Drawer)

1. Offering box- 3 x 3 inch aged wood Tim Wisseman flashpot

2. Stacking Witch runes- 9 aged wood runes that stack and have various reader categories on them.
After the spec stacks them for their reading, at any time you can pull the trigger and either a spirit or your telekinetic powers knock the stack down and you read the runes.

3. A 3 inch tall old pewter keepsake urn- It comes in it's own velvet lined box.
You can fill it with ashes. It has a top that can be unscrewed.
At anytime the urn will knock over and if you wish, spill ashes out, yikes!

4. A package that will contain:
A gaffed Mexican votive candle that can be "knocked over"

A small box of matches with wood match sticks. You can blow matchsticks all over the place

A gaffed feather

All accessories can be purchased separately and I will also offer a price for the entire accessory package.

Remember the Spiritus does come with a gaffed planchette and a Spirit bell

I would really like Roth to address this aspect of the board. I too wonder why the design couldn't be altered slightly to allow for larger letters/larger circle.

I am also puzzled by the Mexican votive. seems completely out of style with the rest of the board.

very exciting release.

Message: Posted by: Roth (Jan 18, 2010 1:15am)
The votive candle is very cool and creepy looking. Spirit workers can be eclectic.

The aged old wood offering box does not match the look of the table either :)

These are items that were collected, found, and added to the presentations for whatever reason the performer comes up with.

The board is not very big and the design fits the size of the board.

I see bringing out the planchette

Start yer script, and before anyone can touch the planchette, it flies up off the table.

At that point I'd say it's time to bring out the spirit bell and make contact.

Of course you can light the votive candle first, place the matchbox down and then blow it off the table (spirits not happy)

The it just knocks the candle over, yikes!

It's show biz!

Totally insane...

O.K. this is a plywood prototype. The real one is thinner and has different brass corners and different brass rosettes.

One rosette is a secret button that opens the drwawer. The drawer is almost as wide as the table and fills almost the entire inside.

The real brass is fancier :)

This picture has no finish on the wood.

The engraving will also be more refined.

The actual one will be Cherry wood and have 5 coats of Amber shellac on it.

If ya like this y'all gonna love the finished product.

All the brass hardware is special ordered.

The drawer is 10 inches wide 8 inches long and 1 1/2 inches deep.

Spiritus is the solar opposite of The Departed.

Departed was designed to be very low end looking and kinda "slapped" together.

Spiritus is very high end and elegant :)

The center of the table is hot. The coil is directly under the moon/rose logo and anything placed within a 4-6 inch diameter of that will get launched into the air.
The logo is the "focal point" of the Spirit energy.

This was Luna Roses' table. Her logo is where the vortex is :)

The center of the logo will throw a Relic Medallion about 2 feet or more.
The planchette will fly and probably give someone a heart attack, so be careful.

I'm going to have a cloth shroud that will also be an accessory. Anything that comes with the table or accessory will move/collapse/fly even when the table is covered with the cloth.

Soemthing put under the shroud will visibly move around under it.
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Jan 21, 2010 6:13pm)
Can the cloth fly off???

that would be GREAT.
Message: Posted by: jonnyboy (Jan 21, 2010 9:14pm)
Couldn't one make a shroud fly off, assuming that you have sewn into it an object that would carry the shroud with it? The hard part, I imagine, would be to make the shroud not appear to be holding an object sewn within it, especially when draped over the table.
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Jan 21, 2010 9:32pm)
Of course... a small something sewn into the corner...that would do it.

Will the shroud be printed with anything rick? I heard rumblings of a tarot spread on the cloth...

If it were really shear, you're right it would fly off with an object under it.

The cloth is a bit to heavy for that :) Stick with the other flying stuff

Trust me guys, when that planchette flys people are going to scream.

If the gizmo were toward the other end, the drawer could be larger.

Is putting it in the center too perfect?

Or should it be there as the center of focus?

If it does too many things in the same show it might throw a light on the cause of it all. So one must choose thoughtfully and carefully.

I compared the witch board and the spiritus...

Size wize the WB is bigger but SM is still also quite large...

Sure the WB can do more as far as movement etc is concerned...

I dunno though -- for me I think the SM loks a lot more practical. Price wise they are not even in the same ball park. And personally I think the thickness is an issue with the WB.

Would like to hear what others think.

I agree with Jay Are. I think comparison is fitting. I am sure most here will do just that. After all you are likely to only use one Ouija board in an presentation.

Things that will be compared are price, looks, thickness, function, deceptiveness, etc.

Frankly, the drawer is what sells this one for me. I only wish it could be bigger. It would make it more deceptive.
Message: Posted by: Roth (Jan 22, 2010 5:40pm)
We all think like magicians, even me.

Hands free-remote- aged old wood-no wires-strings.

no one that sees this is thinking "magic shop" it is beyond deceptive.

I'm putting a warning in the instructions that Outlaw is not responsible for any physical reactions the spectators may have.

They are going to freak out :)
Message: Posted by: chmara (Jan 22, 2010 5:56pm)
OK the last posting confirmed one of the two answers I needed -- the hands free remote for the hot spot.

The second question is: can I sell my soul a second time to raise the (small actually) money needed whilst working on this humongous mortgage I took to pay medical bills for an illness that kept me from working.

I am beginning to feel that between Tim and Rick I will be forever in their debt for putting together a seance for performance -- while paying off a 40 year mortgage or selling my home.....whichever comes first.

BTW - comparing the boards -- simpler, to me, os better. This is simple.
Message: Posted by: sbays (Jan 22, 2010 10:05pm)
Well, I for one CAN'T WAIT to get my hands one one of these. As with all of Outlaws products, it establishes the atmosphere that is critical in any type of spirit theater performance. It's all about story telling. The effects are simply the seasoning.

When a period film is being made, all those small little details in the wardrobe etc are what sell that illusion to the audience.

Just looking at SM will begin to tell a story before you even speak. The same as Rick's books such as Sinister, Luna etc. When people see them, It's obvious that they are quite old and worn. That translates into REAL!

If I had one word to describe Outlaws products, it would be ... Virisimilitude! And that's what its all about gang!

TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT:

Hey Folks, I have been receiving PMs and emails about this board for some truly bizzare reason I have yet to figure out, except for maybe the fact that I am one of the creators of the WitchBoard.

I have received Pms or emails from some people(some of which are participating in this thread). Some of the questions are: What do you think, or what are your thoughts of the Spirtus Magnus?, Are you upset they are releasing another remote controlled board?, How come their unit is so much cheaper, isn't yours now too expensive? etc etc.

Ok just to stop the pms and emails, I thought I would address this publically. While I understand people would like to compare these two effects, I have to agree with dennfox, that the comparison is like comparing apples to oranges. Both boards do ENTIRELY DIFFERENT effects. The only things they have in common is that they are both Ouiga Boards, and both remote controlled. But again they do different effects, and it is all up to the performer what he/she is looking for. Other wise you might as well bring in Milton Bradley's version into the mix while you're at it.

The SM will apparently make the planchette jump off the board(sounds great!) but this is totally different than the animations the WitchBoard does. You can program the WB to move the plancette around the board spelling out EXACT names or phrases that you have custom programed into the board. I am not knocking the SM at all, so please don't read into that, instead Im just trying to explain and show that each board does DIFFERENT effects.

The SM appears to be able to knock over rocks, candles etc, and that too all sounds fantastic, and while the WB can certainly animate other things on top of the board(just like the stack of rocks falling over) It also can be programed to control all of the lights in the room, cuing them to flicker on and off, or shut off etc, and also manipulate things like radios, and TV sets, and other appliances as if possessd by the ghost. The WB also as the ability to rock back and forth for a finale. And WB can also program and maipulate OTHER remote controlled effects, such as spirit bells, my Entity for instance, and even childrens toys, or other custom props etc, acting as a "Control Center" for your complete show.

The SM and the WB both are thicker boards in appearance, and I love how Outlaw added the drawer, as it helps convince people that the board cannot be gimmicked. I used the same subtle technique with my Relic of the Revenant illusion that I created years ago. All of the electronics are hidden inside the wooden chest, but by starting the routine by opening the lid and removing the glass box from the chest that was practically filling the inside of it, gives a subtle convincer that there couldn't possibly be any more room in there for anything else(like electronic gimmickery). With WB it obviously had to be a thicker board, but we did do our research and found that many boards back in the day were just as thick if not thicker than the WB, and we also built the WB seamless, so that it would appear to be solid wood in appearance, with no visible seams that could make one believe that it opens up some how.

To address the point about price, this to me is an unfair statement, as again, both boards do ENTIRELY DIFFERENT effects, and thus require ENTIRELY DIFFERENT mechanics, and building time, material costs etc etc. Privey to what some might think, I don't make very much money on the WB at all, and it is very expensive and time consuming(actually a royal pain in the you know what to be honest) to build the prop for these SPECIFIC and DIFFERENT effects. The price is what it is. And because of the amount of tedious work that goes into each board, and after building 18 of them now, to be honest, I wouldn't be that upset if I never sold another one again..lol.

Finally to answer the other question I have been asked: Am I upset at the release of Spiritus Magnus? Hell No! Now if it was made to do the same kind of effects WB did, then yeah maybe, but this does DIFFERENT EFFECTS, so how could I be.

So for the record, I am very very happy for Outlaw's new release as well as many of their past creations. They seem like great folk over there, with quality props, and seem to continue to add a great deal to the art of magic and bizzare! As I told others, I also think this new board will help satisfy the appetitie of those that perhaps wanted the WB but didn't have the budget for it, but now with the help of Outlaw can finally put a Ouiga board effect in their show, without breaking the bank, and this is great for everyone!

I hope this clears things up from my side, for anyone that thought I was upset at this release.

Congrats again to OutLaw it looks fantastic and I wish you the all the success in the world with it!

Best wishes,

Peter.

Peter great post. I totally agree. Both items look great, and do different things.
Message: Posted by: dennfox (Jan 23, 2010 12:18pm)
Different tools for different type of shows. Witchboard is its own show and stands alone(perhaps even overkill?) while SM is a tool to be utlized with other items and needs to be scripted accordingly within a context. For me SM means "Less is more."

Peter thank you for taking the time to post on this thread.

Your Witchboard is a marvel and likely the ultimate all in one seance experience.

As you and others reading this thread can tell, our products are completely different in the "werks" department.
Although WB could be used in a small intimate presentation, Spiritus could not be used to replace the workings of the Witchboard.

I understand more than anyone about the time and cost that goes into producing high end items, and like you we want the best possible price for our customers, which often means lowering our margins to make a product accessible cost wise for our buyers.

Thank you for the kind words, I always look forward to seeing your latest creations :)

I'm going to draw a distinction here -- and it is not going to be a popular one.

But to me the witchboard and it's seance feels a tad bit "magical" where the SM feels like it would be much more realistic...

Am I off base here?

Message: Posted by: chmara (Jan 23, 2010 4:03pm)
It depends upon your mindset -- and what your familiars and s[irit guides can do.

Because something has a gimmick or "proof" does not mean you must use it. The subtlety of either board is its strength.

Currently -- my spirit board only levitates and slams down to say goodbye. Believe me it is enough for some people to have PSTISS (Post Seance Think I'll Scream Syndrome.)

Just imagines those same people if the planchette jumps off the board even slightly in their direction --- oh my! :-<>

I can't micro-manage my threads (as much as I'd like to :)) but I would like you boys (and girls) to try and stay on topic and focus on the Spiritus effect.

Comparing effects is a natural thing to want to do around here and I understand that, but WB is so different than Spiritus I really don't think they can be compared.

If someone here has any thoughts on WB you guys should post them on the WB thread :)

Point taken Rick!!!

So can the planchette jump while the specs have their fingers on it?
Message: Posted by: RCP (Jan 23, 2010 4:12pm)
It's your distinction Jay and therefore is neither on or off base. Both great products that could be become an experience never forgotten or a cheesy waste of an evening. Purely in the performers hand. Merely tools to create.
Thanks again for the 13th Seance tip.

It would be really coolio if the bell rang and we could pick the bell up to show that the clapper is missing. I'm not sure but I presume (not assume because I know what THAT means :)) it can be accomplished. My thoughts on SM have been on overdrive.

I'm interested in seeing the cloth also.

Most of these kinds of boards are rectangular but I have seen square and round ones and they didn't have a whoppin' death coil :fear:
Message: Posted by: jonnyboy (Jan 31, 2010 8:12am)
Why get one that looks like everyone else's? This is a special board, in many ways, and separates itself from the "toy" Ouija boards, partly by shape. At least that's the way one could describe it. Of course, by definition a square is a rectangle, though equilateral.:)

Rick, I'm curious about the added effects that can be achieved with the introduction of the cloth. Have any of you played with spirit writing or under-cloth transformations as a part of the list of possibilities?

Congrats on what is obviously going to be a hit.

The countdown has begun...

From a blackened book, soot covered and torn,
Secrets forgotten would soon be reborn.

By bell and by candle, and hidden in dark,
A board was created to leave its own mark.

Something for the wicked, something for the wise,
Something for the devils with smouldering eyes.

Listen close now as the hour draws near,
Soon we’ll get word…

Spiritus is here…

SOON!

Absolutely.

One method is to do an out to lunch, place the card under the shroud with a coin over it (gaffed) or a gaffed pencil, and you will see movement going on.

A question: do the electronics make any noise? Powerconverters and coils have a tendency to make a bit of a buzzing sound, specially when switched on. And switches can make rather loud clicks.

Do to the amount of time involved in making these gorgeous tables, Karl has informed me that he needs more money to make them.

Karl makes The Departed and is a brilliant craftsman.

He's an integral part of the Outlaw team and I need to properly compensate him for his work.

Spiritus is currently listed at $425.00 shipped.

As of Friday at midnight the price is going to $475.00 shipped

I'll have pics of a finished table thursday or friday.

They will start shipping Monday and take about a week to complete and ship the first run.

The second run of 12 units will start shipping around the 15th

So if you're in a position to save $75.00 the price will stay up until midnight friday.

I have to tell you guys, Karl can't believe I'm selling this for even 475.00 he thinks its worth $600.00 and he's right.

The reason I sell The Departed and now Spiritus at those prices, is I want them to be reasonable enough for buyers to acquire these fine pieces.

I know they will sell at $600.00 but I'm happy to give up some of my margin to make my products more accessible.

Thanks

Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Feb 2, 2010 9:14pm)
I had wondered about the price of this vs the price of departed.

Departed was more expensive, yet SM was called a high end board and designed to look as such.

Where the departed was meant to look like an old found object.

One would think that much more cost would be associated with the high end board.

The wiseman coild from whatI understand is also an upgrade to whats found in the departed.

That being said -- I think this piece priced at even $475 is a bargain and a half. Departed is $495, and many other simmilr creations out there retail for much more.

Rick you are a mad man.

Amazing looking work -- not only are you to be congratulated by we who are theatrical mediums -- but the thousands of spirits waiting to come through should descend and inhabit your forehead with joy and happiness.

Four or five years ago when you were fist starting up I wondered if you would have the tenacity and fortitude to put up with us weird magicians AND make a living. I know it has not been easy -- but I must say you have become one of the best sources for bizarre magic in this age -- AND -- have remained relatively sane.

How did you do it? And -- the ideas keep coming? You must live in a very odd crypt to make this all come together and work.

Thank you for being bizarre and weird enough to make a business helping those of us who do not have the creative and coordinating building skills you exhibit with Spiritus Magnus ...

Since I have some of Tim's other stuff I know this IS a must have for seance...and wonder if we can arrange, through you, to make sure this device does not interfere with triggering our other devices simultaneously?
Message: Posted by: jonnyboy (Feb 4, 2010 12:09am)
Wow. The drawer makes any gimmicking in the middle look impossible. Also, the black coloring of the planchette shows up beautifully against the wood finish. Since 25% of the 50 are already sold even before the first one is shipped, the only question seems to be how many months before they are all gone.
Message: Posted by: Roth (Feb 4, 2010 1:34am)
I've made a decision that I will stand by and I hope you boys can respect where I'm coming from.

Partly from a business standpoint and partly out of respect for my buyers. Before this product is even shipped almost 30% of the 50 are sold.

I expect another 20 units to sell in the next couple of weeks.

I honestly did not expect these to sell that quick.

I've received several emails in the past couple of days from customers of mine that are dismayed that 50 units will be sold before they can afford to purchase it.

Considering that and the time that went into developing the Spiritus, I've made the decision to increase the run to 75 units.

75 units is a very limited run. I promise there will be no additional units made after # 75 is sold.

I have to give long time customers the opportunity to aquire this a month or two down the road when they are in a position to do so.

If anyone has purchased this based on a 50 unit run and would like to back out, that's not a problem.

I believe 75 units puts you buyers in a very exclusive club.

This is not all about making money, it's about giving people the opportunity to get a truly beautiful piece of bizarre magic before it's gone forever.

At 50 units, that could happen pretty quick, leaving some of my long time customers out of luck.

I estimate that it will probably take 2-3 months and the 75 units will be gone.

Please respect my decision. I create products for you guys and I want to give a fair chance for buyers to get one.

I also want to thank Karl Feret for his wonderful craftsmanship. Tim Wisseman for his brilliant "ïnner werks" and Looch for his cool top design.

I think that many others on here will agree that the increase to 75 is not that bad. At least it's not 1000 etc.

One suggestion I might make is removing it from the outlaw website once it is sold out -- or at least do not have pics of it up there. Spectators these days are smart and google is a wonderfuly easy tool to use.

This is by far the single most beautiful piece of equipment I think you have ever produced, you should be proud Rick. This is a gorgeous show piece that will become a collectible no doubt.

As for buying it on the basis of an exclusive run of 50, I didn't base my purchasing decision on that (in fact, you hadn't announced the limited run nature at all at that point). It is very decent of you to offer people their money back, but there's no way I want to give mine up, and after seeing the pics, I doubt anyone else will.

Message: Posted by: chmara (Feb 4, 2010 8:23pm)
As an old marketeer (and I do mean old) let me suggest that you issue the 75 regular edition -- then issue a last 25 with a few changes as limited edition high end models for collectors. The changes could include -

Changing the top to a leather inlaid with guilt. Or guilt edge letters as you might find painted on glass.

Upgraded brass trims.

Upgraded planchette with special trim.

Especially deigned and limited edition pendulum to use with set.

A "book of answered questions" in the Luna Rose style -- that ties to the board.

A rapping hand appliance (25 ONLY)

A way t designbate (an attached engraved plate, for instance) who the bard was created for.

Limit the order time - Number this set with a "Serial number" on hidden part of drawer, under table - planchette, etc. listing such on a certificate of authenticity signed (in person) by each of the creators.

Jack the price to $1,000 plus -- then if only 10 sell in the allotted time it becomes your choice whether to make or withdraw the rest of the run -- OR hold a few to sell even dearer after a year or so...signed and numbered as are art prints in galleries.

And I am sure all here can add other ideas to include -- possibly a special cover -- a case, etc. etc.

As I posted above, a quick reminder.

Tomorrow at 6:00 PM L.A. time the cost is being increased by $50.00 to $475.00 including shipping , to cover Karl on the additional cost and time of producing each unit.

Thanks!

This must be getting to me.

I read all 6 pages of this post yesterday.
Then last night I dreamt that Roth was in my photo studio. REALLY!
I never found out what he was doing there. he just seemed to be looking at pictures.

I want one of these sooooo bad.
Is it blasphemy to suggest that I need to sell some of my other Outlaw stuff to help pay for it.

Hideout wallet. Opus Diablo, Templar, Luna '36, Reflections, SanctomII anybody?

Very nice indeed! The top looks carved and the planchette needs to glide around. How does that work?
Message: Posted by: Vic Nadata (Feb 5, 2010 6:53am)
I believe that the planchette is flat with felt on the bottom for easy gliding!

Would still love to see pics of the accesories ( which are no doubt gorgeous ).

J
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Feb 5, 2010 9:43am)
I would like to get an idea how long for the accessories to be shipped. If the main board is so popular and production has been increased to 75 units, then(unless some gimmicks have already been made) it may be quite a while until Tim or Karl have a chance to get to making them.
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Feb 5, 2010 10:10am)
Purely speculative here -- but I believe all of the accesories are already made. Karl makes the runes and the pendulums on a regular basis as part of his company. And all of the other accesories appear to be simmilar in fashion to pieces available for Cabinet Des Meurtos and the Ark of Asteroth.

The only newly manufactured piece is the wiseman offering box I believe.

All indications from rick say they will ship with the board. Perhaps rick can confirm my above post.

j
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Feb 5, 2010 10:19am)
I will pm and ask. The only reason I ask is that others who bought the Ark of asteroth reported that they got there item in bits and pieces as each artist in charge of creating them finished them. I have no problem waiting if this is the case I am quite patient and I never rush Art.
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Feb 5, 2010 10:54am)
I had heard that that was the plan with the ark...

No idea with this one though...

And I agree -- don't rush art.

I must add this -- having manufactured and custom made products throughout my life. There is an innate lead-lag time between conception, prototype, first production and salable product that most Americans (and young folks) do not understand (or wish to understand.) These folks have become indentured to the idea that a product is perfected before it is offered (Toyota proves that is not so) AND has a precision assembly line ready to go to manufacture the product.

This, magic proppery, is not that type of industry. Sly and sometimes very skilled craftsmen ply their trade in basements and garage shops to create magic props. They most often work alone -- and have lives, you know, wives, kids, a night out every now and again.

When their skills in one area cannot give them what they need for a complete prop -- the wisest turn to a magic craftsman who can -- who is usually in the same position. To do otherwise often way too expensive if you are working in limited numbers and would require production of enough units to flood the market as does Mikame, Mak, and Abbotts on their "best sellers."

Add to this the VERY LIMITED market that Outlaw has created as a niche (and boy am I happy Roth is there) AND the fact that Roth has had to learn some very difficult business and marketing principles as he builds a company from scratch in a really LOUSY economy whilst trying to offer useful, practical and special looking magic to we in the bizarre field -- and you will understand that he is not only a "build it and they will come" optimist --- but a hard working - overworked and partly undercapitalized individual who is working on becoming a major custom magic supplier without becoming a Wal-Mart or a person interested in the profits of second rate mass production on sale to all comers.

For this he is to be commended. For overcoming the problems of growth - often seen as slow delivery when we want FAST delivery of perfect pieces -- I think we buyers need to be a whole lot more flexible. I for one am happy he just doesn't turn on a machine in the morning and at the end of a day end up with 100 exactly the same "tricks" -- or printed material that has every un-aged page looking like it just came from Barnes and Noble or Borders.

I shudder at the idea of lamination to protect stuff from aging if we use it as real props. I do like durability -- -and Roth has put in the research and testing in most things to make sure his stuff is reasonably tough -- usually tougher that an item of the real apparent age might be. BUT THAT PROCESS too takes time.

So - on marketing -- if you figure you will sell maybe a dozen somethings a year -- and make that dozen but end up with orders for 38 -- someone is going to have to wait while you make the additional ones -- and you have an obligation to be developing new product, marketing old product, building and finishing product, depending upon contractors who promised and missed their delivery dates -- handling cash flow in paying everyone on time -- AND handling all the requests from we crazy ADD impaired and slightly demanding MAGICIANS of the world.

Then look at how many of us are members here on the Café -- (40,000 +) and how many inquiries that are not productive Roth must answer in a week -- and you wonder when the man sleeps...ever.

Just remember this -- the Great Wall of China. Rome, The Brooklyn Bridge, The British Empire and Notre Dame in Paris were not built in a day. Neither are great bizarre magic props -- or exceptional magic prop companies. A little slack and understanding please when things go wrong -- we are all human -- we are all misunderstood -- and most of us EVENTUALLY get to solving the dilemmas we have caused in growing, disappointing people along the way, missing deadlines, shipping wrong places, not meeting promises for a very long time because of things not in our control, or even seeming to break promises because of things IN our control we just cannot seem to get to without dropping a lot of other balls.

In the grand scheme of things --- I must say -- that Outlaw and Roth are Gems of the Magic Community -- who may still be in the polishing stages -- but the rough cuts so far seem pretty magnificent.

Just my two cent opinion.

With SM on the horizon I ask the question -- what's in YOUR box?

Mine would include the following items...

A complete kit for use in the seances the board would be employed to perform.

The planchette...

Candles

A protection block...

A small pendulum...

A shard of glass...

A few runes...

A deck of tarot...

A small journal...

If it were for a self-contained show and it may very well be:

*A pendulum (I prefer my nutria paw but also use a "lucky" Dubloon on a chain in some instances)
*A bag with an incomplete set of runes
*The Witches' Almanack and some cards tucked into the back
*A straw fetish [doll]
*My supply of Altoids (communication with the Spirit World is definitely no time to have nasty odors upon one's breath)
*A strange, bloated eyeball suspended in a liquid preservative
*The premium "thank you" envelope sent to investors in the ill-fated Higly Expedition of 1942, the spoils of which came to be known as "The Dark Museum"

The SM really does have the begginings and storage of a self contained show...

Imagine an intimate gathering...

I have goosebumbs just thinking about the things that could take place on this little "stage".

J
Message: Posted by: handa (Feb 6, 2010 9:41pm)
I bought an original "Poltergeist" outfit years ago at an auction. I was pretty excited about it because of the hype I remembered when I was younger. The problem that I had: there is no real motivation for the presenation area, even with the storage drawer. Having a talking board burned into the top of the "stage" makes sense because it is now a viable prop that both generates conversation and sends questions toward the theatric side of things as opposed to the M.O. side of things.

I sold it at the same auction one year later. I may have even made a few bucks on it if I remember correctly ;)

I'm pretty excited to be in the queue to own this particular Outlaw item.

Question:

those of you who have purchased SM -- what do you plan on doing...

A) Using the board for an "old story) contacting spirits tied to luna...

B) Use an old board to contact "new" spirits or ones totally unassociated with the Luna Rose Mythos...

Just curious.

My initial thoughts lie with option B. But only because I am not well versed in the Luna Rose mythology or any of the other backstory associated with outlaw items.

J
Message: Posted by: jonnyboy (Feb 8, 2010 1:53pm)
I plan to use it unconnected to Luna Rose. I don't think there are any limitations to this at all, and plan to have an original presentation(s). It will be fun mixing and matching the various accessories to tailor the presentation precisely to achieve the effect I want and the story I want to be told.

The shroud is not gaffed. It is really a "cloak or subtlety".

The coil goes right through the cloth so if you cover the table and then put the spirit bell or the runes on top of the cloth, they still work.

You can also do a small tarot reading on the cloth.

Here is the bell. It will match the planchette with a black lacquer.

This stand is in three pieces, crescent moon base, vertical dowel and cross dowel. It can be assembled by you or the spec and the bell hung by its aged brass chain.

There is a bell and stand on the market now that can be assembled and it sells for over $400.00
You get a bell and a stand you can assemble with the board :)

It's very simple, yet elegant. The base will fit in the drawer but the bell will not.The bell and base will be shipped in a little box or pouch.

The bell itself is solid brass with an aged green patina. The stand is black and lacquered just like the planchette.

This stand pictured is not a finished black. It is not even lacquered yet, it will look like elegant victorian.

So you know, both Karl and Tim have geared up production lines in their respective workshops :)

But it seemed a bit complicated and the wait time was a bit long(i still think it is a beautiful piece though) but I am glad I put it off. I like the simplicity of this bell. With only 4 pieces to assemble, it will be much easier to instruct the spec on how to put it together.

Someone is very excited...

BTW - Mr. Jay Are, your seance recording, which I was listening to while driving down the road on a dark and rainy night a day or so ago coming back from a show - had a moment where I almost screamed out loud and jumped like a little girl. Good stuff.

I'll post more on that on the appropriate thread. Now, go back to your mail box and I'll do the same - my final Luna is hopefully arriving any day now...

...got another message from beyond...

apparently the planchette is capable of flying violently into the air doing a "triple summersault" or sliding across the board in an eerie fashion depending on positioning...

Gwa ha ha ha...

Message: Posted by: necroloid (Feb 12, 2010 9:18am)
I don't know. Maybe I am a bit anal about this, but with everything being able to tossed a round the board, I am concerned about the board getting scratched and dinged. From what I understand its not an aged piece. It is supposed to look very high end and I am starting to get worried about using it. If I were using something like the departed I wouldn't care about chips and scratches.
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Feb 12, 2010 9:34am)
That was my concern too...

Here is the thing though. If these things got thrown off the board in a real session -- the board would get dinged.

Comes with the territory.

Perhaps 2 would be in order?

A working model and an heirloom?

I think Rick should put out a higher end model made of different materials. For those of us who might simply want a collectible piece...

J
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Feb 12, 2010 9:40am)
I understand where you are comming fron Jay. that's why I love aged props. if they get dinged, who cares? But that side of me that wants to keep the shiny pretty stuff shiny and pretty wants to never use the board. I should have thought about this. I would buy a second one if Roth put out an aged version.

I heard that he spent 2 years traveling across the midwest on his wonder tour searching out the most haunted locations. He would take parts of these homes back with him to new york and construct spirit boards. They say some boards contain unwanted spirits ...trapped forever within.

Question of the day...

How do we transport the SM??

Any solutions?

J
Message: Posted by: Vic Nadata (Feb 12, 2010 10:48am)
I was asking rick to create a case for it. I think an aged case with a brass plaque with the name Hobbs in would be perfect.
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Feb 12, 2010 10:52am)
I would buy a case for it yesterday!
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Feb 12, 2010 10:53am)
Agreed...

SM needs a case...

J
Message: Posted by: Vic Nadata (Feb 12, 2010 10:59am)
For myself I would want an aged case. I would like exactly the opposite of what SM looks like. A dark beat up case, but when you open it, the clash of the pristine wood would be shocking. The board was used only once, and then locked away in the same warehouse that Indiana Jones placed the ark.
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Feb 12, 2010 11:00am)
Great back ground for it Vic.... until it gets dinged up in use.

EDIT: actually it would have to get pretty beat up for the story to go south. Again fantastic idea VIC.

About the case: I have no intention of making the board's removal from its case part of the show. So I'm glad it fits quite practically inside a generously proportioned and heavily padded laptop bag. Bear in mind that such things can look like old lawyer's bags.

Here is a test vid of the various ways the planchette can be positioned to move.

You'll notice that it can do a violent move, it can be positioned to point to individual letters.

It can be positioned to point to yes or no. You just have to learn the spots that coordinate with the move you want.

Absolutely frightening -- it is exacty the minimalist approach seance and spirit work take. It seems with the variety of add ons -- it might be tempting to overuse the action -- so have you built in some sort of fail safe to punish a magician who tries to do it all in one sitting???

The test vid shows the different areas and types of movements you can get, including hitting the trigger several times to get a "dancing" move.

Of course "less is more" regarding this presentation and I guarantee that a small movement or jump in the planchette will be enough to scare the he## out of someone.

Vids are coming down tomorrow and an Eddie Garland film will be debuting next week.

If Rick wants me to, I'll write several routines for the SM that would include a number of Outlaw products including the carny tarot, Luna, the warlock/templar/relic, and of course the items specifically designed for the talking board--all with a less-is-more presentational theme.

Message: Posted by: Roth (Feb 16, 2010 6:36pm)
Anyone that ordered will get all 3.

I found finding the right feathers was almost impossible and shipping on feathers is very expensive because they have to packed in a big box for safety.

I bought tons of feathers (I'll make a pillow) and only a handful were any good.

So yes they will go out to the buyers but they will not be available from me anymore

I'm sure if you guys want you may be able to gaff a feather, just don't shoot any endangered species to get one.

BTW the matchboxes are very cool old time original boxes from the 30-40's

J
Message: Posted by: chmara (Feb 16, 2010 11:19pm)
You have discovered why feather props ae so expensive in bouquets and boutanias. About 75% of all feathers are culled from each pound that arrives -- and of those maybe 25 per cent are usable by folks like Richard Hughes to make his stuff. So you buy about 100 feathers at about $40 per pound and up and end up using six...if you want a quality product.

Then -- of course - there are chicken feather for cheapskates. I am glad Rick is not a cheapskate and puts out no feather before its time. Which offers the idea that maybe he (or we) should be asking Richard about his unused seconds and whether they can be gaffed?

Just how many "attachments" do we need to keep this board un-boring for the magician in each of us? As many as Outlaw can dream up and produce. How many do we need in regular performance? One, maybe two. Ahh but the magician in me says get at least one of each and see which works best;.

Wonderful to dream, isn't it? Only the SM spirit board knows.

Message: Posted by: StPaulMagician222 (Feb 17, 2010 1:41pm)
Greetings All,

I would really like to have some background story information that surrounds the mythos of Outlaw Effects. Some of the History of Luna Rose, Hobbs and Co and the Wonder Tour. I of course have done searches on all these knowing that sometimes these stories have hidden within them 'grains of truth'. I also am one of the lucky ones to have discovered Spiritus Magnus and have ordered one for my Seance Parties and while I may not stick with the complete OUTLAW themes. It would be great to be able to reveal some history behind the board and the character Luna Rose as part of my developed story lines. This effect is the sort of thing I dreamed about when I was doing Spirit Theatre as a kid in my basement some 30+ years ago. I plan to use the board frequently as part of my set but it's mechanism sparingly and only when I need to drive a point across.

While one good way to get more info would be to keep ordering more OUTLAW products that relate to these topic's and I am sure that I will be doing more of that down the line, using material provided with an effect. Like most of you, I have purchased more magic and effects than I could ever use in one lifetime and my job with each project is pulling out the very best of what I have to fit the venue I am working on from a carefully selected set of about 25 pet effects and choosing maybe 5 or 6 that I will use in any particular performance venue. All of my routines are scripted with room for ad-libs and other unexpected phenomena.

I live in Saint Paul a block away from the birthplace of F.Scott Fitzgerald and just a few blocks away from where he wrote The Great Gatsby. Many of my stories revolve around his wife Zelda and the 'High Society' life of Summit Avenue which BTW has the longest string of Victorian Mansions in the world. Fitzgerald's wife was famous for taking long luxurious baths in several of the mansions during social gatherings... She would just disappear to be found later by another guest, servants or if she fell asleep the owners of the home. My neighborhood is also famous for it's many hideouts where the Dillinger Gang and Ma Barker chilled after their out of state/county jobs having a deal with local law enforcement and yes even with all this rich history I too manufacture situations and add details that no-one could verify if they tried. (Picture me avoiding a MN Historian after a program when he wanted to know where I got some of my facts...<Big Wicked Grin>)

So it would be great to have someone in the know put out a history that we all could glean from so that there is a consistency of information about Hobbs, Luna and the wonderful talking board he created for her? Or is it a tribute to her?.... Perhaps this subject deserves a new thread where all of us can post the information we know or have heard or even manufactured in our own devious heads.

Any Ideas?
Message: Posted by: andreas (Feb 17, 2010 2:45pm)
Hi, here is one of my rare posts :)

@StPaulMagician222
I think your idea about collecting "everything" about Luna, Hobbs, The Wonder Tour... is not working for me.
For me as a storyteller it is a great promoter not to know everything but to hear a little bit about it:
Someone who has had a dream...
Someone who "knows" someones grandpa which has seen Ms Rose at the Apollo
Someone who has found an old blurred photo which maybe show Cornelius Hobbs
and so on

I've read that J.J. Abram bought a "Magic Mystery Box" as a teenager for $15. The box should contain tricks for about $50. So what did Abrams get for his money? He still don't know. He never opened the box, because there is something more important: it is the possibility, that this box could contain EVERYTHING! Endless possibilitys, dreams and hopes.
For him (and so it is for me) the mysterious is more important than the knowledge.

So I would like to hear the whispers about Hobbs&Co, the mystic about the Wonder Tour and maybe see some shadows about Luna Rose.
I don't want to create a fix story around it an give up all the mystic that is in "The Box".

Some days ago, I created ....eeehhh I mean.... I found :) this old catalog card
http://www.blyberg.net/wp-content/support-code/vcc/cardimg.php?card_id=795498873
maybe some hidden secrets :)

I have conducted extensive research into the matters you have raised.

Luna Rose was a commonly used name by many who wanted to be the real thing. The real Luna Rose's mother was Romanian or some say a Creole! We may never know!

There are many that will deceive you in your quest..........

I would advise you to proceed cautiously when you discover The Sanctum Group. They are not a nice group of people, not anything like the Sanctum Society that helped Luna perfect her gift.

It was a type of tobacco that was snorted not dipped like today. There were elaborate snuff tins and jewelery to carry a small amount. I remember a great aunt that was close to a hundred when I was a small boy. She kept a snort or two in a small necklace when she went visiting. Not all pendulums need be ocultish.

Maybe you could shim one of those toe nails and use it with SM. Make me one too. Before anyone barfs :imsick: think about it...the toenail acts as an attractant to its disembodied spirit and jumps off the board much to the dismay of the sitters ;)

Or, and old style pewter urn!?!?!? Do you have any nails to spare? I have ten but shimming them would be sort of a problem. :)
Message: Posted by: handa (Feb 18, 2010 5:39pm)
Toenails: David London's terriroty. He does something pretty significant with them as a signature piece, but they are not treated as relics as much as they are part of a curious collection.

Cruel Intentions is one of the most twisted movies I've ever seen as far as psychological deviance goes. Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) wears a pewter crucifix on a chain around her neck. A vial containing cocaine is cleverly hidden within the crucifix, and the spoon is attached to the top of the cross. This is an interesting symbol as well as a plot device.

Side note: I have a crucifix that slides open and apart to hold all of the basic components for Last Rites. They are known as "sick kits" or "sick call kits" but a friend calls it my "Jesus Stash Box."

Hollowed-out items and things with "secret compartments" make me think of these two objects and their purpose. They make me think about Bear Larsen, too, and he would be an interesting prop to add to the SM line.

We now return you to your regularly-anticipated posts about Spiritus Magnus. I have to take a break in order to clip my toenails, anyway...but not for any particular reason as far as you know.

Agreed! Rick has been nothing but kind to me. He has always been quick to respond to questions, and has always delivered a high quality product. On top of that, he is a nice guy. He could be charging WAY more for the quality he offers, but he keeps it reasonable for us that can only shop reasonably! He cares about the craft and it shows.

Just to weigh in (and Vic will back me up on this, I think) Rick does care very much about his craft. I work with him and I know. What's more, he is in a constant state of working on at least twenty items (most don't make it off the drawing board), running a mail order business (have you ANY IDEA what that takes?), keeping up with these MC postings (and other magic chat rooms), personally hand-aging books (several hours for EACH item), and running damage control on snarky postings from antsy clients (most of whom have a problem with the postal system, not Rick)--AND he runs his business on an EXTREMELY small profit margin. He's practically volunteering his time and work year after year. Combine all of this with the living-in-a-dream superior quality of the Outlaw product, and I for one would certainly like to see everybody . . . and I do mean just absolutely everybody . . . cut Rick a very great deal of slack.

I just went to an antique shop and found an old table that will be where my SM is displayed. For now, it is home to the ST box, 3 Higley Heads and a leather envelope, and Inquisitor with a WA resting against it and the 5 cards from the WA spread out beside them both. Oh, and 3 well placed candles to give light and shadows to all of it. I have been WAY to excited about the last few hours decorating.

And it will change daily for a while - once I get my third Luna in the mail, the keybox and trilogy will also be a real showcase...

Of course, ultimately the SM is going on top...

Fun - I'd post a picture but I have no idea how to use my wife's camera and the flash must be off to get the full effect.

Can't wait to see the video Eddie!

Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Feb 22, 2010 10:07am)
Btw...

discovered something very strange ( for real, not made up for story etc.)

I frequent an antique store in my area, and over the weekend I was there ( I have been frequenting it looking for props to compliment the spiritus box).

I found a doozy...

An old "Fortune telling coin" its for a virgo. The coin looks like the type that would have come from a nickel machine in the 50's with a fortune imprinted on it.

side A reads:

Your lucky numbers are 4 & 5
you are a loyal friend
your lucky day is wednesday

Side B reads:

August 24th to September 23rd
Virgo

It has the zodiac symbol and a relief image of woman holding a wheat bushell.

But that's not even the stranges part...

Inside the box there was also a small bit of paper wrapped in old twine.

I unrolled it, read it...

and this is what it said...

"anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or who interprets omens, or a sorcerer.

"11 One who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist or one who calls upon the dead"

"12 One who does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things your LORD and GOD will drive them out before you"

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Is it part of some sort of ritual?

Do I need to be concerned?

F'ing bizzare and I'm admitedly a little scared now...

Sufficiently creeped out...

The reference to passing children through the fire refers (as you probably already know) to the worship of the god Moloch; you can read a bit about this disturbing practice here - http://www.crossroad.to/glossary/rpg/molech.htm
As for why that piece of scripture would be with a divination item leaves me perplexed as the two items contradict each other quite strongly.

Message: Posted by: James Braund (Feb 22, 2010 1:47pm)
Moloch as a title was ascribed to many gods - the Bohemian Grove Owl is indeed one of it's incarnations. The Rituals used in ancient magic should really be of interest to us as they are effectively what our magic today stems from. You won't get any darker than the Old Religions - sacrifices, wicker men, vengeful gods and what kept it going - the underlying power structure based around Ritual Magick. The knowledge, Gnosis, was power - initiation protected the secret wisdom from the profane and kept the power with the initiated. When you shine light on magic it ceases to be magical. The psychological subtleties employed by and taught by the "Priesthood" are still relevant as they are universally effective. The use by the ancients of sound and light, symbolism and music, sensory manipulation, parables and legends combined with something offering something of the unknown I find fascinating and very much applicable in my magic.

Fundamentalist would lump any and all occult related activities into the same demonic category. The fact that it was wrapped in the scriptures has a certain charm to it. Scorched by fire and brimstone!!!!!!!
Message: Posted by: Bill Ligon (Feb 22, 2010 5:44pm)
I would say that it is significant that the scripture was bound with twine, as to restrain its effectiveness. Sympathetic magick at its best! It is an interesting find. Please do not throw it away!

I will be out of the country until Mid March, and plan on taking a break from the Café once I begin crafting my new seance experience for the 2010 season.

All the best!

Tables are starting to ship this week. I expect a few will hit mail boxes by the end of the week.

We're gearing up to get about 8 out this week and 12 out next week with all 42 orders up till now shipped by the 20-25th.

So hang in there guys.

Also because the table was the priority, some will ship with accessories and some accessories will ship separate.

Karl and I have master lists of tables and accessories matched up to buyers.

So please don't PM me and ask if yours is shipping with or without accessories :)

All tables ship with the planchette and the spirit bell and stand.

We're finalizing some aging on the runes this week but I told Karl not to hold up getting tables out, even if that means extra shipping cost to me to send some accessories out after the tables ships.

So please do not email asking if all items shipped together. If you get a table and not the accessories, just means that they are shipping separately because we want to get these out and not hold up the shipping.

I'll be setting up the S.M. forum this week :)

Once again ALL TABLES WILL SHIP WITH THE PLANCHETTE AND SPIRIT BELL

Thanks!

-Rick

Somewhere in my alchemical tomes there is a pen scrawled entry that warns that screwing around with the time tables of the master craftsmen working on what might otherwise be a masterpiece will inevitably lead to doom, gloom and destruction rendering the demanding patron impotent in demand, disappointed in life -- and born unto woe under a bad star sign.

In a matching grymoire a generation later, a different hand notes that patience and forbearing is more the role of the wizard who would appreciate the perfection of craft and noble performance of the items created for both function and mystery.

More recent scientific evidence suggests that true artists need time, space and an intelligent audience to truly feel rewarded by their work. Items produced under severe deadlines requiring too many shortcuts often lead to shoddy production and Wal-Mart Quality at Sears prices. This is a situation truly crafty and wise wizards prefer to avoid to dodge the anathema of impatience and the wallow of demanding the impossible instead of accepting the merely improbable.

Frailty. All is human frailty -- if we do not let the true craftsman have his due and use his time as his muse and sleep schedules dictate, we join those impatient one who are truly ***ed to eternal anticipation of a perfection that will never exist in their ken.

Very thoughtful routine that has been posted. Uses another Outlaw product in conjuction with the SM, and uses the SM's special capabilities to subtly enhance the experience, rather than overwhelm it.

I once again viewed the Spiritus film linked to in the Café headline ads. It is a pretty darn good demonstration and eventually either needs a sequel or a series starring the vents and the board as the detective, no?

Are Luna Rose posters (smoking or not) going to be on the project board? It is a wonderful mythos.

SM are starting to ship this week. You'll see guys posting that they are receiving them.
That said my priority with Karl and Tim was getting the table-planchette and spirit bells shipped together.

Karl is just now getting to the witch runes. Some SM will have some accessories with it, some will not.

If you did not get your accessories it just means they are shipping separate.

Here's a shot of the creepiest true witch runes I've ever seen :)

Well, magic equals money to my wife so that helps. Also, she has full charge of every other room in our house - this room was the extra "junk" room over the garage that up until a few weeks ago was full of well...junk. Also, we love to watch scary movies/thrillers so she kinda likes the haunted Victorianish look.

The main reason though - my wife is AWESOME!!!! (Now to go and show her this post!)

BTW - no SM today in the mail - I am devastated as all my hopes and dreams were built around it coming today. I shall now have to take what's left of the ashes and build myself up until Monday - no SM on my birthday tomorrow...sad times indeed.

Several tables will be hitting domestic buyers this week. Int. tables are also going out.

There is one Spiritus that we are not sure if we should ship... I may keep it, Tim seems to want it too, but I may ship it.

The drawer seems to open by itself. The mechanics are no different than any other drawer.

It can be shut for hours, and when Tim walks into his shop, sometimes the drawer opens up. I'm not kidding.

It doesn't always happen when he is there, he told me he has seen the drawer closed for more than 5 hours, come back to his workshop and it is still closed, and then a few hours later returns to the shop and it is open.

This would be a cool effect, but its not. The drawer in this table seems to open whenever it wants, and at completely random times.

Not belated! Right on time - it's today!

A REAL haunted SM! I'll bet Tim is enjoying that!

I'll have to post another pic or two of the room in a couple of days as it's gotten even more atmosphere to it now that a few additions have been made - my favorite being a Victrola Talking Machine that actually works and has the old timey sound from the old timey records! It can be very, very spooky. Oh, and I have a potrait of a young Luna Rose, or a young Lillian, or a young girl from who ended up in Colney Hatch, or a photo of one of the young woman who died during the Salem Witch Trails, you get the idea...whichever suits my purposes...

Anyways, my SM is on the way (shipping Monday) after Rick and Tim made a very nice and thoughtful last minute change to it...something about ghostly frequencies not interfering with other ghostly frequencies... :)

This would be a cool effect, but its not. The drawer in this table seems to open whenever it wants, and at completely random times.

Wow. What number is it Rick? :bg:

NUMBER 4!

It just sits there hour after hour quiet as can be in the corner of my office. I go out to the wood shop for a few hours and come back into the office and the drawer is still shut.

I am on the computer or on the phone and *POP* the drawer opens up all on its own. It always happens when I am in the room with it and never when I am away from it.

It started happening the day that I cast the silver ring of the dark lord for he who I shell not name.

The drawer has opens on its own 6 times so far. There is something really weird about number 4. Number 6 seemed extra creepy as well, but it has shipped out to some poor soul already.

It's just the spirit's way of saying "Oh yeah Tim, we got your number." In this case they got your number 4. Has anything else like this ever happened? Maybe they want you to put something special inside the drawer. Who knows?!?

Number 13 is inching its way to Canada.
Number 12 on its way to Texas.
SM #9 is in the mail to SC
Number 3 is running around somewhere here in California
Number *6* is going to Kennesaw GA
Number 10 is in the mail to OK
007 is in Great Britain. . . along with #2
15 is headed to WA state

Vic's is still here in my office, it will get packed up today.
The next 3 going out at Vic's. There is one headed out to London and another to
Charleston AFB.

I figure #3 should be delivered today, given the fine efficiency of the Post Office in California. Dennfox shouldn't be the only person with a SM, especially as he sits at exactly 666 posts as of this post.

Reese yours leaves here today, on its way to London. What happened was we desided to add a different on/off switch to all the units. It delayed shipping all of them. The good news is you can turn your SM board on and of in under a second now. Before this change it took 2 to 4 minutes, depending on how handy you are with a screw driver. The numbers 1 3 13 and 15 were reserved by certain people that mixed up the list a bit.

I have been unable to find a number yet, not an issue for me. I was surprised at how aged it was! I would say it's more what one would expect from a traveling carnival than a New York Medium. I wiped mine down with a high grade furniture oil and it's now perfect for my story line. The feet are not padded be careful it will scratch what you place it on. I have been busy taking photos for Jay :) and have not had a chance to test the wirks. Power outages in Texas tonight are just a coincidence. It's a work of art and is easily worth a $1,000.00. No one will be disappointed.

I am being patient waiting on my requested number #22.

How are these being shipped- UPS, US Mail ? Every time I see a delivery person at my building I ask, "Do you have a package for me today?"

It has been so much fun watching this forum and seeing this project coming together piece by piece.
The pictures of the finished product look better than I ever expected.

I guess I need to be patient just a little longer.

When I was a kid my parents would take me to the Magic Store in October or November and let me pick out $100- $200 worth of effects and then I had that long wait until Christmas Eve when I could open them up and act surprised in front of all of the relatives.

Well, I got very good at removing scotch tape and re-wrapping gifts before my mother got home from work. I figured I had to rehearse so that I could do a good show for the family on Christmas Day

Gosh, I miss those old days when I was innocent and cute.... <wicked grin>

O.K. we have a table that came in early and there is a rather bizarre issue with the table.

The drawer opens whenever it wants to. I mean it can be closed for 6 hours and suddenly it just opens up.

When you close it you hear it latch shut, but 1 hour or 5 hours later, there is no rhyme or reason ( we think it's haunted) it will open.

Tim has it in his workshop and walked in and the drawer opened right in front of him.

The first guy that wants this and PMs me gets it, if yours has not been shipped.

I will tell you, I told Tim to fix it and he said it isn't broken.

It may stay closed for hours and then open, it may stay closed for a day and then open.

If you want it and have already paid PM me

Thanks buddy!

The bell is the smallest pure brass bell made anywhere. I made the decision that I didn't want to make the table thicker just to get the bell in the drawer, which is what we would have had to do.

The stand does come apart and can fit in the drawer.

Of course the bell and stand deserve their own special little box, remember a spirit bell is not part of a talking board, it's a special item onto itself :)

Mine came yesterday, and it truly is a work of art. The accessories that came with it look terrific (planchette, shroud, urn, pendulum, bell, runes). Unfortunately, I hadn't planned ahead with the batteries and so need to make a trip to Costco this weekend. I'm sure reviews will come in, saying how great this is in operation, though I personally can't do so yet, but as a conversation piece alone, it is fantastic. The long wait is over. The fun begins.

Got mine today as well! Just walked in and opened it - now, how do you close the drawer? Mine pops right back out - I think I may be doing something wrong! I too forgot to pick up batteries, but it is already sitting in my magic room on the center table. Now, someone pm me about the drawer closing procedure!

Wayne - you are correct - 24 AAA batteries.
Message: Posted by: Chad C. (Mar 19, 2010 12:34am)
Talked with Tim on the phone and got a pm from Roth on how to correct the drawer. As always, great customer service from both of them. Should be a simple fix! Whoohoo! Tim also guided me through how to get inside it as one of the two screws snapped as I was starting to unscrew it.

And of course, if for some reason I can't do that in the morning - they will take care of it for me. Got to love folks who stand behind their products and are quick to help you out!

On a side note, I love the new way to "shut off/on" the board in just a few seconds - a GREAT addition!

On another side note - just used my Departed for an elementary school audience tonight - no amplification in front of between 300-400 teachers, parents, and students and the bell came through loud and clear and the ball could be seen moving from way off as well - gasps were heard from the very back of the room - but it wasn't a scary presentation and no contacting the dead. Think "Once Upon a Time..." theme. Nice and it was a hit with everyone.

Now then, enough about the Departed, back to the sm...

This is even better than I had anticipated. An absolutely beautiful new antique, incredibly deceptive in design, wonderfully versitile, highly practical, and an absolute bargain!
Message: Posted by: Chad C. (Mar 19, 2010 3:17pm)
Well, I have got my drawer working properly - thanks for the very, very simple solution provided by Mr. Wisseman, and I was able to remove a screw that broke in half when I was removing it, once again thanks to Mr. Wisseman for his instructions, and also thanks to Rick for being in constant contact with me last night while all that was happening!

I got some batteries and put everything together and it works perfectly! The planchette literally does flips, sometimes off the board, and at other times will smoothly slide across the board to a very specific location - it all depends on the placement of it - so experiment with different areas. The bell works great and rings every time - and it's quite loud - similar to the Departed bell or maybe even louder.

AND I absolutely love the on/off feature - no more unscrewing the bottom to power it on and off! Two seconds or less and it's on! I think this should be done to all future products!

The design has already been discussed and I'll just say that Outlaw, Tim, and Karl continue to improve the already great old look of each and every new product they come up with together.

Well done and worth the wait, and thanks again to Tim and Rick for the stellar customer service.

Chad

A few more observations, thoughts and ramblings about my Spiritus. Have enough batteries on hand before it arrives. I ended up having to take batteries out of remotes to have enough which led to my first issue. The used batteries went dead with all of my experiments. No problem it's easy to change them but in the process I managed to get the little copper wire caught in the little drawer release spring which shorted out the wirks. Pay close attention that this doesn't happen less you be panic stricken that it doesn't work anymore. Remember the magnetic on /off switch? Panic reoccurs if you forget it's off and you try to use it! There is a sweet spot for each artifact. Trial and error-buy extra batteries! It's a great little close up table. M******c coins love to do tricks. The Relic makes a great little pendulum. There is a little noise generated which is not an issue with any of the items except the pendulum. Stock up on PK m*****ts I used up all of mine creating additional props.

Your going to love it, hope everyones is in the Monday mail.

The Scorpion?? lol

Guys, if you haven't installed the juice yet just go ahead and do it. I scared the bejeesus out of my son. As he concentrated on the planchette it somersalted off the table end over end. I've never seen someone's eyes get that big I don't think. lmao When I put it back together after installing the juice I made sure that those leads were bending in away from the drawer spring.

The urn is a little heavy but I don't see that using it will hurt the table. The story possibilities with the urn are almost endless - from the ashes of a jackal to the ashes of something more human or whatever you want.

One of my wife's friends dropped over and noticed my new antique. She asked about it and the bell sitting on it. I told her I didn't know much about it or why the bell was with it but I liked the way it looked. She started telling us about spirits and mediums. I mentioned that I didn't believe in such things but knew that many people did. After she finished her theory on what it was the three of us went into the kitchen for coffee. Just as we were out of the room the bell rang and as the three of us looked back you could see it still swinging. Weird!

Kotah I don't have any of them but think they would work great. I have had great fun launching anything I could find but from a performance stand point less wil be MUCH more. The strongest reactions I have seen have been from an indirect use of the wirks. Give this a try, while the customer is spelling out something hit the wirks as the planchette moves over the spiritualy enhanced area. I was in another room, 20 feet away, watching the gals asking the board questions when I tried it. Worth every penny!

Oh………., A Light and Heavy Card routine. Is a spirit holding the card down with her finger? <Mr. Vic

If Polarity really 'IS' what controls the Stick or Fly with the Wisseman coil. Imagine being able to make a small light/heavy box. Hold for just a moment with a couple of N50's. Could the Spirit be pushing down on the box? Perhaps too much? What I have found is that It generally depends how deep you have already been able to pull them down the rabbit hole in the first place.

My interest in 'SM' came from the need for a Simple, Clear, Spirit Bell that would work well in diverse situations. Adding the fact that when covered, it will makes a very nice close up stage/ table for other routines like Reading Tarot Cards or use it to display and showcase some other bizarre Item from my collection. This is what sold it for me. I just had a wood shop here duplicate a victorian style table I own out of Cedar and is the perfect size for Magnus to rest upon. I will finish staining and sealing the table once I see how SPIRITUS looks on it and what color Luna wants it to be.

I love Jim Magus's Idea bringing up the wineglass. Oddly, I was just looking at Boulevard 54 before I saw the post from him and I suddenly had one of those goofy A-Ha Moments.

Also then, I can then uncover it for the Spooooky part of my routine toward the end of the performance if the conditions are right for me and my 'Spirit Guide' is willing and they want to see just one more strange and unusual thing before I depart.

I have been recently replacing my older props with either duplicates or new effects and stories as I stopped performing magic for about 7 years and I immersed myself in Community Television and went up the ranks from Cameraman, Floor Director, Control Room Audio, Digital Editing and Lighting. Then onto Producing and Directing; Documentary and Short Digital Film projects and finally got certified to use a large TV studio on my own. My goals were to learn all the skills behind digital television production so I could produce a promo as well as a broadcast version of my revised production of "Possible/ Impossibilities" . I also have been working on a program called 'MN Magic' which features local talent from around the Twin Cities area. So far I have created just 1 half hour episode. As I make my transition back to my first love, I now am only Directing one TV program and Producing another. As well as remounting my 40 minute Live Show for homes and small black box theatre and an 11 minute Stand Up Parlor piece for use as a Warm Up Act, or a Charity Event or even Cabaret/Street Style Theatre.

I jumped on the SM wagon with all of you on February 2nd and have had a chance to just stew with all the possibilities knowing I can use only 1 or 2.

Remember we must treat these things delicately or it hurts the spell.

The doll hand sounds awesome and will go with my Lillian's Diary routine - it will rest perfectly in the music box that she loved as a small child...yippeee - can't wait to get this!

BTW - Doug's monkeys paw scoots/twitches nicely - nice, small movement that would freak out someone while telling the story! Nice!

I was thinking the same the same thing after reading these comments. It sounds like a pretty strong ****** and I would be afraid of using it around a person with a Pacemaker.

Notably named - the HOT spot!

(my Mother collects those old dolls- like a museum of victorian madness is what I grew up in, I remember as a kid how afraid I was of the basement and this one room full of doll parts- heads up along the wall, arms in one drawer legs in another, a musty box full of wigs -it was creepy. I knew where all the light switches were and I knew how to turn them on and off while I was running up the steps to get away from...... I still am not sure of what I was so afraid of way back when? Or Why, when I walked into a certain room on the main floor where they all would just sit and stare at me, hundreds of them all lined up in curved glass shrines some on the floor having a tea party others riding a rocking horse or sitting in a wonderfully carved mini baby chair. All dressed up in their sunday dresses and fine little suits, boy dolls, girl dolls and even littler dolls some of them had pets too with little leases and little gloves….. you have obviously hit a hot spot. <smirk>

I am afraid if I showed my Mother a rapping baby hand the next time she visited that she would probably have a heart attack.

Spring is Here!

Yep, I was beginning to wonder if everyone had gone on vacation.
While I have not seen a new list of people set to receive online again,
I can almost see my #22 sitting here on my lovely cedar table I had
specially made to hold this little gem.

While it would have been nice to have used SM for my Spring Equinox Preview Show with a bunch of Witches and Pagan types. I did find some very useful information in Jim Magus's Book "Tales from the Talking Board" I purchased from him after I decided to get a 'SM' myself. There certainly is some fun material in his book. It also has got me going through my bookcase and re-reading Brother Shadows "Have Seance will Travel" and losing myself in the pages of INVOCATION once again.

Never having seen all of Matrix, I have not guessed the password to the OUTLAW forum yet.
I have put the question to a few friends who have seen it and they just give me a 'Huh' sort of reaction.
I plan to try a few guesses this weekend!

OK, my SM came in today. It was delivered to work (mainly because I don't want my wife to bust my chops at all the money going to Outlaw), anyway, as soon as I installed the batteries and had a few minutes to play with it, one of my interns came in and saw it. He is a big guy by the way. I told him my friend was an antique dealer and sent this to me. He was intrigued.

I asked him to put his hands on the planchette. He did without questioning it. As he put his hands on it, it jumped. He screamed like a 12 year old girl at a Jonas Brothers concert! It was so funny! He just looked at me and said, "You are a dirty bast**d you know that". Then he turned and stormed out of my office! Classic!!!! I love this thing!

Lovely Lucy was her name. A tiny little porcelain doll for a little girl.

She was one of the lucky ones. She was in the arms of one Maggie O'Hara the night the Titanic sank.

Maggie was 5 years old. Her Mother, little brother Henry and her made it on to one of the first lifeboats the night the great ship sank.

Sadly, this is all that remains of Lovely Lucy. Found in an attic back in the 40's.

Apparently that night in the Atlantic was rather traumatic for Lovely Lucy as well. She, or rather whats left of her, has the ability to tap out messages from the great beyond when placed on the Spiritus Magnus.

That is strange isn't it?

Here's the last known photograph of little Lucy's ummm...arm. It actually almost the exact size of this photo.

Well,

My SPIRITUS MAGNUS arrived today just a couple hours ago. My Postman had a big smile on his face when he knocked on my door and asked me if this was the package I was waiting for. 'Yes it is, as a matter of fact" and he could tell by my huge smile that he indeed had made my day.

Such a beautiful thing to behold. It looks like it has been sitting up in someones attic for a very long time.
This is really something special and is definitely a quantum leap from my Parker Brother's ; William Fuld -
OUI JA board. I am almost at a loss for words. (which for me is unusual <Big Grin>).

With the cloth in place it makes a lovely close up stage to feature my other bizarre presentations before the final Candlelight Seance to speak with my Guide. I could not be happier with the workmanship and attention to detail of my talking board.

Thank You OUTLAW TEAM for something really remarkable.

Is anybody there?
Oh, I think I just heard a bell ring way in the other room.
Can't keep them waiting... gotta go!

Really wanted to get this, but $125+15 Shipping! This is the first time EVER that I have seen the price of something Outlaw put out, and had second thoughts about purchasing due to price vs what you get. Considering Outlaw put out a hand lathed and aged gaffed pendulum for $70 and a hand carved aged gaffed rune set for the same amount, not to mention for a mere 10 dollars more I picked up Lillian's Diary(I can only imagine how much work that took), I cant really justify the cost for a m******ly gaffed doll arm, aged or not.
Do not get me wrong, if that's the price that you need to charge to make it worth make it so be it. And if there is anything that Roth or Tim would like to explain to me about how much work is required to produce it, or if there is any thing else that comes with it, such as an aged box or something, I am all ears. I would really like to pick this up, but at the price you are asking I would hope that it is truly possessed by a child spirit. But it still looks beautiful!
Message: Posted by: Roth (Mar 30, 2010 9:45pm)
Each Lovely Lucy is hand made.

The Spiritus should sell for $700.00 with all the work that goes into it.

At $475.00 plus shipping (and a lot of you boys paid less than that) the Spiritus is under priced.

You guys are just spoiled by me

Try buying a Thayer Rapping hand, let me know what that cost :)

Yes it comes with a very nice velvet carrying bag too.

Sorry for the little rant :)

BTW, your right, Lillian should sell for $175.00
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Mar 30, 2010 10:12pm)
YES we are spoiled by you Roth. And you will have to forgive me, I am unfamiliar with the Thayer hand. Let me be clear that I think all of your stuff is fantastic or I would not have purchased about a thousand dollars worth of it in the past year. But as you said you, spoiled me, and I guess I had a little bit of sticker shock to see something that you have priced at what you really think it is worth. Sorry to put you in rant mode. I just really wanted to know what went into making it. It is a beautiful piece and maybe one day I will buy it.
Thanx for everything.
Message: Posted by: Jay Are (Mar 30, 2010 10:16pm)
Here is what I know...

#1: Outlaw's products are pretty top quality. Why? Because he has master craftsmen working for him. Without Tim's ingenious work, Karl's beautiful construction, the thinking of the contributors past and present for items, they just would not exist. These guys put a lot of hard work into the items Rick puts out.

I happen to have some behind the scenes info on the creation of little lucy. For the amount of work that went into this piece it should probably be closer to the $150-$175 range.

The SM table and all of its beautiful accesories are WAY under priced, and we have been spoiled.

I say pony up the dough and enjoy these incredible little pieces of art.

BUT...if you don't I won't be too upset -- I would not mind being the only one with Lovely Lucy.

As a certain Mr. Callahan once said..."you have to pay to play..."

I think that the value of the object depends upon the way that we use it. I've paid more for less functional things, and less for boxes of stuff. There's stuff on my shelves that cost me waay too much money that I may never use and a few dollar store items in my case that are a part of every show. Such is life.

That being said, "Creepy doll hand is creepy!"

Well lucky for me I made enough money recently to pay an unexpected debt and I had just enough money left to order my Spirit Magnus :) (Praise the Dead!)
I think it is the only one LOL

Not got one, it wouldnt suit me - however, I was thinking..what if someone gets to see two in the same month? these things are supposed to be one offs...

its like when something becomes popular in magic or mentalism - everyone starts performing the same thing...and it weakens it...

however, with this...

"hey, I saw some guy with the exact same thing just the other week..."

"oh? really? what did he look like..."

"kind weird, it did all kinds of horrible...i swear I saw something move.."

"sssshhh....come and sit with me, I bought this two days ago from the same man...no wonder he didn't want anything for it...he said he was leaving town..."

and then you start building up this lovely little mystique of why its getting passed on, and how people have tried to destroy it time after time, that it maybe survived house fires too...and maybe even was the cause of one as well?

you've decided to keep it, because you think you've found more clues as to lift the curse, by using the powers it can summon against itself...

to borrow from one of papalazarou's friends thinking - the wood itself came from the gallows used to hang the condemned...

that kinda thing...

if I had one, I'd say that the planchette was found in the hand of the dead, just over their heart...and that the bell sat by the bedside of someone cursed and infirmed who could not speak...some old, haunted, cursed family somewhere...

as I type all this, I swear I saw my wallet twitch...

The creation of legends is central to succesful contact with spiritus...

I would strongly suggest treating her like a loaded gun...

also....i encourage discussion of sm to go to the forum....off the searchable Café.

this is my last post on the magnus thread.
