*Thump*
I sat up in my bed, listening intently to the quite of the old house.
The large room muted the ticking of an old grandfather clock on the far side of the room.
No sooner than I had laid my head back down onto my pillow I heard it again.

*Thump*
This time, I was sure of it, the sound was indeed coming from the old cupboard.
I carefully stood and walked through the inky blackness of the bedroom.

I opened the drawer and reached for the key.
My hand trembled as my fingers unlatched the lock.
Slowly the old door creaked open.

The Cabinet Dark was made to keep those who do not know from getting to something they cannot control.

It is recommended that those that chose to acquire the DarkSpell, consider the safety of also acquiring the The Cabinet Dark.

Oh, there is also something unusual about the lock on The Cabinet Dark. It may not easily be opened. There are many keys, but only one will free the book.

More on all when the Professor returns...

From the opening of the performance manual:

DarkSpell
Stultitia est timore mortis mori: it is folly to die of the fear of death (Seneca)

You have before you a most rare and wonderful piece of arcanum. It is, if you will, a recipe book for calling forth supernatural powers. The walking dead, restless spirits, and even guardian spirits, angels, and demons are at the beck and call of the necromancer who masters the secrets of this book.

The necromancer must pass tests in calling forward his minions of darkness and light. Memory, telepathy, clairvoyance, and emotive resonance are required, and the successful necromancer will soon realize that control can be chaos, for even as you succeed in calling forth the undead you will scarce believe it yourself. The mind slips sideways through this book, and your conscious thought is of no use to you.

This is the world of DarkSpell.

How big is the writing? My only criticism of both Phantoms and Book of Answers is how can people read the small print in bizarre lighting?
Not a whinge, but genuine real-world performance problems chaps. Were these products road-tested in a proper bizarre environment?
With much love for the concepts,

Steve, what exactly is "bizarre lighting?" :) A torch? That would be bizarre. Moonlight? that would be cool.

I wouldn't worry about DarkSpell. It's well spaced with a nice size font.

Just use yer Andruzzi self lighting candle and you should be fine :)

Steve, you know that I'm a working bizarrist myself with several decades of professional, real-world performance under my belt and that I use PHANTOMS in my regular act. I have not had a problem with it in a variety of lighting environments . . . proper and otherwise. DarkSpell, if anything, features even larger type and is quite legible, as the photos demonstrate. Of course, any book is going be difficult to use if you turn the lights down too low!

The effects in DarkSpell are all road tested and (in different clothing) have been part of my act since the twentieth century!
Message: Posted by: teaguejb (Jul 1, 2011 1:09am)
Finally!!! A chance to contribute something in my area of expertise!!!! I am a professional lighting designer, and this is actually something I run into all the time when lighting restaurants. Here in new York, all the restauranteurs think the lights have to be basically off in order for the space to look sexy. The problem is that they also like to print their menus in 4 pt font. So yeah, reading menus becomes a challenge.

Here we have a related issue brought to our attention by Dr. Steve. Some of us typically don't find ourselves performing in lighting scenarios where reading is a challenge (hence the fact that prof bc hasn't seen these difficulties). Other people (Dr. Steve being one) prefer to stage performances with lighting where this becomes a valid concern. This is really something for everyone--performers and vendors--to consider, and we should thank Dr. Steve for pointing this out.

Yes, OE (and others) can play-test their printed material under challenging lighting conditions and then claim dim-lighting-ready as a value-added feature for some products so that spookies who want to perform under moonlight will be able to find a book test specifically printed for that situation. Not sure how you would accomplish that from a graphic design standpoint, but maybe it is possible. It sounds like darkspell is printed in such a way that it may be the right prop for that. (note to self!)

However, there is certainly some design work that can be done by each performer to make a challenging lighting situation work for the effect/routine/act in question. It is possible to create lighting compositions that seem to rely solely on things like candles, torches, or moonlight that are actually enhanced with other light sources. And I'm not necessarily talking about sophisticated equipment. There's no easy formula to make a reading-friendly lighting scenario that also looks like a torch-lit crypt, but it is possible to solve such challenge. Anyone who has ever seen Todd Robbins in Play Dead has seen lighting (designed by Tom Weaver...but should have been me) that does this very well. Sometimes, creating a better lighting situation means just being aware of the way light is reflected in a space. Having trouble with too-dim light? Maybe try a white tablecloth instead of the black velvet one you're currently using. I know...that kind of choice can create another visual problem to solve. I'm just pointing out that lighting is half about source and half about the objects reflecting that source. Candles are glare sources that make the iris expand and the pupil contract. Hiding/masking those glare sources and/or letting a lot of their light bounce off of a nearby wall can help. Just don't set a candle too close to something flammable, please! And let's not forget that some printed materials are just not going to be legible in some lighting situations. And font size is not the only determining factor from the standpoint of graphic design.

I don't know if this helps anyone or not. If not, my apologies. Also, I didn't mean to hijack the thread. And as always, I'm happy to help fellow magi with lighting-related stuff.

Message: Posted by: docsteve (Jul 3, 2011 7:19pm)
Teague, thank you for that. Lighting is the second last thing we have any control over ( spectators being the final thing!)
Maybe you could start a new thread on this - I'm sure many would find it valuable.

Brian, thanks for your feedback; have you honestly never had reading problems! I once asked a man for a 5 letter word who turned out to be completely aphasic following a stroke aged 48! Definitely one of those moments you want the ground to open up! How do you select the participant?

I can think of 3 times where I've been troubled by the spectator not being to read/see clearly/ understand/ all of the above. The problem for me is that the spectator is so "with me" that theybfeel bad, and I feel 20 times worse. Social embarrassment is so contagious too - no-one escapes clean.
One specific occasion with Phasntoms involved the picture page - great I thought, I'm in. Turns out he couldn't read the rest. It seems patronising to ask "can you read?" before a booktest, yet, can you "read without glasses" did not deter our dyslexic friend.

Perhaps I'm in a specific circle of Hell for mentalists/ bizarrists, paying for previous crimes :-/

Best wishes & happy 4th of July to LL my US brethren
Steve

Everyone has spec problems from time to time, of course. In addition to the issues you mention (physical incapacities) one must always be on the lookout for alcohol-induced inability (the spec's, not the performer's) and the sheer nerves most people feel when called upon to get up in front of a group (no matter how intimate the setting). None of this has to do with prop malfunction, however, which has not been a problem for me. If the venue is too dark for the normally sighted person to read conveniently, I don't incorporate a book routine in that act.

Generally I select a participant who seems to be into the performance, has good eye contact during the opening routine(s) and smiles or blushes as I look her in the eye. I usually choose a female or apparently gay male. If I were a female performer, I would select a male. Never underestimate the theatricality of unstated sexual tension during a performance. There is much of the courtship ritual in a good presentation.

Good Lord!
My partner has had argued with me at least twice about my choice of young pretty subjects on stage; I can just see her face though if I'm standing holding a Higley in the midst of the Village People!

Good advice though, thank you.
I do use the ploy of anchoring the warm, fuzzy 'melt' moment when the routine climaxes to the spectator - I first saw it explained on the commentary on of the DB DVDs; works very well.

Michael J. Fraughton (author of Dark Waltz) has had a chance to read an advance copy of the DarkSpell performance manual. Here is the opening to the foreword Michael has written for it:

"A book is a curious and powerful thing. By its very nature it is magic; it transmits thought and experience directly from one mind to another, whether those minds be separated by time or space.

"In light of this surprisingly mystical nature of books, consider that a book of real (practical) magic would, for the reader, be a direct connection to a mind that accesses the miraculous. While experiencing such a tome we should expect to be guided along such sinews of thought that it makes miracles possible. A Grim[*]ire is a thing so desirable, yet unattainable, that it would only be expected to exist in the realm of myth, fairy tales, and other forms of stories.

"In DarkSpell we have something that changes all of that for those who encounter us as weavers of mystical experience. Participants encounter a valuable, and for all accounts real, Grim[*]ire. They read from it, they work to produce the magic described within, and for most people the magic will actually work to an impressive degree."

Minty: that is very kind, thank you. To answer your question, PHANTOMS and DarkSpell are my two books. I also had a hand in LUNA 1934 (with Rick and Vic taking lead, of course). I wrote the LUNA performance manual, So Dark, as well as performance manuals for Ipswich and Lillian's Diary (Vic's book tests), and I supplied the new material for Reflections V.2. I also build the Lucy prop for OUTLAW and supply the bat for the Reanimator.

I'm off to age . . . the books, I mean . . . well, I guess I'll be aging, too. That's me multitasking.

Now the cat is out of the bag.

It's a Tim Wisseman creation (a little rewiring of the Reanimator)---but RCP PROMISED FAITHFULLY he wouldn't tell, which is why he will be spending the rest of his life in 1836. Remember the Alamo!

. . . and blood. I just took a wicked paper cut from one of the books, so one of you will have a little extra reality in your Grim*ire. Wonder if I'll need to mark that one with a bio-hazard sticker before posting.

Never fear, I am a regular blood donor, so my blood is tested every 8 weeks (and the only risky activity in which I engage is playing rough with the cat, which is a blood sport in itself) . . . any takers for this 'extra special limited edition,' bloody fingerprint version?

Sticking plaster in place, back to it.

Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Jul 11, 2011 7:35am)
DarkSpell is a limited edition of only 100 books. Each comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity. When the current books are sold, there will be no more.

All 100 were made up in the same run, so there is no waiting on orders.

Lads and Lassies:
You should be receiving your DarkSpells beginning today. Because of the rush to get them into the mail, I should tell you that they will very likely still smell of the workshop. That aroma will disappear in about the time it takes you to learn your routines, but it might be a good idea to leave it where it can air out a bit for the first week.

Also, if you've ordered a DarkSpell, even as recently as last night, they have all shipped as of this morning. If you do not receive yours (in the US) this week, PM me. I have your tracking information. For my friends in other lands, check with your customs office if you do not receive yours in the next 10 days--and of course please feel free to PM me to double check when I sent yours.

Cheers,
Prof BC

The DarkSpell Forum is up and running on the OUTLAW site (it is in the pull-down menu marked "City Hall" at the upper right of the Outlaw navigation bar, click on "Outlaw Forum" and then on "DarkSpell"). Your password is on the first page of your performance manual.

There are posts there already about finding and collecting props, finding a good Tarot deck, and maximizing your revelations (with suggested scripting included).

There is also an announcement about online support that you may wish to use for your performance to lend extra credibility to your DarkSpell book.

Come join the conversation--or just lurk.

I will be posting more in the days and weeks to come. Hope you will, too.

I was doing some experimenting with DarkSpell using my Wife as Guinea Pig as per usual.
And I would like to report I have fooled my Wife! Sometimes I suspect she knows more magic than I do, so this really pleased me.

This is Hands down my favorite book test/amalgamation of awesome/show in and of itself.
I personally love making my spec the center of the show.
Anything that allows me to put the moment in their hands instead of mine makes it all the better.
And that seems to be DarkSpell's main intention. We are on the same page so to speak.

Already recieved the prrrecious Darkspell, and am not decieved.
Just the book it self worth the price that I have payed for him!
And am happy to have the 15th one! :)
Inside and outside the book spreads charisma, the leather work and the gravings are exelent! Some of the pictures inside are really diabolic.
In the routines I expected a little more to be honest. But I know that the routine in the pdf are just the beginning.
The size of the book is also great, not too small, not too big.
Conclusion: am very happy and I feel a lucky bast because I have a rare work of art for a very small price.
Thanks outlaw and Professor.

I've been busy this morning over on the Outlaw DarkSpell forum. You might want to have a look.

I've routined an "Emotive Approach" opening for each of your 100 spells that includes a long section on "Playing the Spell" that I've just added. Enjoy.

Here's how again: go to Outlaw's website, click "City Hall" in the upper right navigation bar, select "Outlaw Forum" and then "DarkSpell". Your password is at the top of the first page of your Performance Manual.
Message: Posted by: minty (Jul 22, 2011 7:57pm)
Mine's landed in the UK. I haven't had time to get to grips with it yet, but I was immediately bowled over by how diabolical it looks. I'm traveling overseas for the next couple of weeks and was considering taking DarkSpell with me so we could get better acquainted. Truth be told I don't want to risk some foreign border guard stumbling across it and finding myself getting locked up in a dingy cell accused of witchcraft. This book definitely has an aura about it.

I've had a quick look through the performance manual and I love the way that there are a number of different types of spell or routine contained within. The book gives you a range of options, from using a simple f**** to guarantee a particular type of effect, all the way through to performing a fair few spells back-to-back without there seeming to be any repetition. My mind boggles at the possibilities of pairing the book and performance manual with just a few simple props. Needless to say, Prof BC's performance manual explains the basics up front, but then goes on to give you many more ideas than I can take in in one sitting.

The quality is right up there with Phantoms, but the feel of the book and the effects are very very different. To anyone undecided about whether or not to buy this, I'd honestly recommend you take the plunge.
Message: Posted by: fraughton (Jul 23, 2011 8:01am)
I am still collecting my props for this, and I have to say that Darkspell is exceptional. I believe that a book of this nature is one of the most valuable items a bizarrist could own.

I'm very happy with mine.

DarkSpell & DarkSpell Cabinet Review

I am the proud owner of Darkspell #2. I just wanted to write a brief review of the book itself and the cabinet.
The Book – Darkspell itself is a work of art. It is a beautiful black soft leather binding. It is also a fairly thick book as well. Its pages are made of high quality paper. It is filled with lovely fonts that are in black and in color. It is lightly aged and feels wonderful to hold.
The Effect – The effect of the book is a wonderful idea. It is a book of spells. The spectator can choose any page if desired and the performer can divine the spell. The workings are well thought out and the book comes with a large performance manual explaining the details of the book and ideas on presentations.

The Cabinet – The cabinet that holds Darkspell is a great idea. It is much heavier than I expected it to be. The book fits perfectly inside and once the cabinet is open you know you’re in for something special and the large antique lock is foreboding. The cabinet is aged well and once opened you will find a place to hold your book and a nice sized drawer to hold all items relating to the effect easily. The cabinet itself is not only the resting place for the book, but an actual effect unto itself. The cabinet comes with a series of keys as well as a small aged bag to hold them in. This is a great way to start the effect.

In conclusion, Darkspell and the Dark Cabinet is a full act that shouts out quality and craftsmanship. It is a must have for any serious collector and performer.

Great review Vic!

In the performance manual it says:

"If you own one of Outlaw‘s d**** c*** effects (Spiritus Magnus, Oculus, Dark Board, Hobbs Box, or the forthcoming G******* Box) ..."

I'm assuming the Dark Cabinet doesn't have a d**** c***? I thought maybe the G******* Box was the same as the Dark Cabinet.

Right, it was, but when I wrote that we were still discussing the potential of the DS Cabinet having a d**** c*** in it, but that plan changed. Sorry I neglected to go back and change that in the manual.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm the proud owner of number 20, and let me tell you, if the are any still sitiing on the fence, this is my favourite piece so far - just nipping ahead of Ipswich.
On this very thread I publically bemoaned the type font on both Phantoms and Book of Answers, so I hooe you know I am being objective here, and not a fan-boy. I also hope you know that I intend to use this in the real world - meaning it must be practical, congruent and engaging in it's execution.
Well, I can confirm all these things.
After playing with it since Monday I gave it a road test last night. The routine plays very oddly, actually. Firstly there's the jazz element that you yourself won't know how this is going to pan out. I was hoping for the demon routine, but it was the lady phase that was selected.
The 'problem' with the routines is that to you, the performer, the method is so-o simple it's easy to forget that in execution, almost nothing is given away by the participant ( yes, participant, NOT spectator!). The best frame for this is that the participant is carrying out a magickal operation; if the powers that be are in alignment, certain things fall into place. Omens abound. Cosmic synchronicity is played out, right in front of you both.
I think the good Prof stressed this is not a book test, and for those who have followed the other Outlaw releases, this will be be a deviation from your perceived norm.
I've just caught up with some of the routining on the forum too - rest assured this is a prop with many angles to it, and it seems to be still evolving.
At only 100, this will be a classic, and I suspect the best is yet to come.

Criticisms? The pages aren't as aged as the cover - I intend to see to this. Also I plan to employ may of the tips the Professor gave in the Ipswich performance manual for 'damaging' the boook; I aim to make look like it's been studied and used back to front by a fervently obsessive occultist. Think the Half blood Prince's potions book in HP!

I have so many ideas for this, and addition props to it; but not to be told here; I look forward to contributing to the forum - the forum will be huge with this one, I predict!
Steve

And, for those of you who don't have IPSWICH, you might want to give it serious consideration. It's a Vic&Rick book, and it's a killer. I was proud to be asked to write the performance manual for it.
Message: Posted by: Godzilla (Jul 24, 2011 9:59pm)
The time machine must have been broke... :)

I also think if aged too much,it would look like the book was not guarded and taken care of !
(I like the older aging look, but that may not be correct either!)

Would you not try to protect something of such "Powers"?

I still have to decide on the aging !

-G
Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Jul 24, 2011 10:07pm)
The book is appropriately aged for the period, but some may want it to look more thumbed and consulted depending upon how they wish to present its backstory.

Does anyone use their Carnie tarot with Darkspell? Do the revealations with only major arcana go well? if not, what tarot cards do you use?
Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Oct 18, 2011 10:53am)
Carnie Tarot will work beautifully with DarkSpell. It is especially good for performers with vision issues or who prefer to work in particularly darkened atmospheres. There is also a thread about cards on the DarkSpell forum at the Outlaw site.

News: Tomorrow (Hallowe'en) I will be aging a special Hallowe'en collector's edition of 13 DarkSpells. These will be exactly like the other DarkSpells but will feature a touch of mildew darkening the page edges and a bit of something else to indicate the book has often been used in the depths of night.

Please Note: These are all part of the 100-run limit but will carry a special edition number in addition to the run number. To that end, I long ago pulled 13 special numbers to allow special edition #13 of these 13 to also be #52 of the run of 100.

Again, this is not an additional printing but rather a special group of 13 pulled from within the limited print run of 100 that are exactly the same as all other DarkSpells but for an extra touch of age and a special collector's number and notation on the Certificate of Authenticity indicating that these books were finished on Hallowe'en 2011.

These will sell for the regular price. No special numbers can be reserved. First-come, first served. And special number 1/13 (which is also #27 of the 100 limited edition run) is already bespoken and will be on its way to Costa Rica tomorrow after it is specially hand aged.

If you've been waiting to purchase your DarkSpell, this is your chance to own a very special edition of this very limited run.

And Happy Hallowe'en.

Great News Prof B.C

Happy Halloween to you too.

I've been on the fence so long on this that the fence feels almost a part of me!

Still, the good Prof's special edition has finally pushed me over the (dark) side and an order duly placed.

The obvious sense of physical relief has now been replaced by a seriously heightened anticipation.

Can't wait to start casting the spells... :)

Spent the day from midnight to early afternoon aging the Special Hallowe'en Edition DarkSpells, and they came out very well indeed. Went trick-or-treating with five adorable children at dusk and then (after a mad drive) presented my midnight seance at The Grove Park Inn (PHANTOMS and my own Pierce-Lasky plates performance). A most memorable and exhausting holiday. Tucked up in my Grove Park bed just now with room service at the door, so All Saints is also looking good.

Rick tells me that the Special Hallowe'en DarkSpell Edition is already selling well, and I just wanted to reiterate that these are going to be the next 13 sales, first-come, first-served, also that these sell for the regular DarkSpell price.

One last note in the interest of full disclosure: the DarkSpell aging process takes several weeks to reach its final, finished effect. Therefore, while the book is ready to perform 'out of the box' as it were, purchasers should look for their DarkSpell to mellow in colour and feel and reach its fully aged look sometime in early December. Also, the wax on the cover may be left intact or else you may remove as much or little as you like depending upon your individual tastes (discussion and instructions will soon be on the Outlaw DarkSpell chat room).

I just wanted to say that DarkSpell is one of the finest pieces of 'real' magic I have ever seen (or smelt!).

The book is a joy to hold, to read and to work with.

A fantastic piece of art that draws all around it in whenever it is unwrapped from its cloth.

Many thanks to all concerned.

I just couldn't resist snapping up one of the special editions even though I already own one of the originals. I love it so much, I'd been considering getting a second copy for a while now. DarkSpell is soooo much more than a booktest.
Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Nov 3, 2011 11:56am)
I'm receiving a lot of PMs, so perhaps I should post the answers here.

There are about one half of the special editions left, and they will be the next books sold. You do not have to do anything special to order one. These 13 will be the next group out of the door.

Yes, you order these from Outlaw exactly as you would a 'regular' DarkSpell.

No, they do not cost more.

No, once these 13 have sold I cannot 'fudge' a few more and pretend they were done on Hallowe'en--13 is the limit.

Yes, 'regular' DarkSpells will continue to be available until the full 100 are sold.

Yes, the 'regular' DarkSpells are in short supply with well over half now sold. (BTW, PHANTOMS is in even shorter supply with over 75% sold).

No, DarkSpell will never be reprinted (nor will PHANTOMS). These will be the only 100 ever (ditto PHANTOMS).

Yes, I like Lucien Astor's Tarot very much indeed, and yes I think it will work wonderfully with DarkSpell (I believe it was created specifically for DarkSpell; the fact of which I am enormously proud--the cards are splendid).

And I think that covers it.

Thank you very much for your interest in DarkSpell--those of you who have recently purchased it, be certain to visit the Outlaw chat room (your code is in the performance manual). There are several extremely interesting and helpful threads there.

Cheers,
Professor BC

Notice: There are now only 5 (possibly only 4) Hallowe'en Special Editions remaining.

For those receiving a copy of the Hallowe'en Special Edition, I have just posted a note on the Outlaw DarkSpell chat room under "additional aging tips" that you might wish to consider.
Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Nov 5, 2011 8:43am)
Mitcham, Surrey and Springcroft, London, you have the added value of knowing that your Hallowe'en Special Edition DarkSpells were posted on Guy Fawkes Day--they are on their way. Enjoy Bonfire Night--wish I were there. Remember, remember!
Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Nov 6, 2011 12:32pm)
Update on availability:
I currently have 4 copies of the Special Edition still available (possibly 3, depending on a pending sale) and have already had two PMs this morning about these.

If you want one of the Hallowe'en Special Editions of DarkSpell, they may well be sold out soon.

There will still be 'regular' DarkSpells available in stock after the Hallowe'en Special Edition sells out.

I will post here as soon as the last Hallowe'en Special Edition is sold.

If you place your order after the last Special Edition has been sold, I or Rick will contact you first to see if you want a 'regular' DarkSpell and allow you the option of canceling your order.

To repeat what is said in earlier posts on this thread, the Special Edition is exactly the same as the 'regular' DarkSpell (same effect & book) except it has a bit of extra 'mold' on the pages, blood red wax dripped on the front cover, and the Certificate of Authenticity carries both the number of this copy out of the full run of 100 as well as a notation that this is one of the 13 copies finished on Hallowe'en 2011 and the special number of this copy out of those Special 13.

Thanks to everyone for your interest and support. Remember to check Outlaw's DarkSpell chat room forum for more information and performance ideas.

With or without extra mold and red wax, Darkspell is simply amazing! If only I had more opportunities and bizzare settings, I would perform the routine way more often :)

Just received my copy (#47) "Halloween edition" (#10/13). This thing is "beautiful"!! I haven't even read thru it, or figured out the details on performance, but it looks and feels incredibly authentic, and gives one the creeps just looking and handling it. Couldn't be happier with the purchase, even though I haven't gotten into the werks yet.

Many thanks for the PM. Great idea. I should have done this before. This is the Table of Contents for DarkSpell listing the magic your spec can do. Your spec turns to the index on pages 5 and 6 to choose any of the following spells (you employ no force of any kind). While a few of these headings have only one spell attached to them, there are several specific spells (as many as 8) under most of these spell headings.

Ye Spells (drawn from the Sator-Arepo magic square):

Satorti: To Beguile Wealth 8-15
Satorum: To Protect Wealth 16-19
Satorat: To Draw Wealth 20-25
Risisio: Ye Spells of Health 26-29

The keys and padlock are also aged very nicely. The cabinet smells like death itself, not stinky like a corpse but you'll know what I mean if you own it. My Darkspell is now very happy it has a new home hehe. Now just waiting for Hobbs box to turn up.. Mann outlaw items are so addicting haha

In the spirit of holiday giving, DarkSpell owners are invited to visit the Outlaw DarkSpell forum for your special Christmas present: a full effect to be used in your DarkSpell routine, complete with all (full-colour) printable props and the performance manual you will need to perform the miracle. (This is a downloadable program that requires you to print the props and, if desired, age them).

How do you get it? Go to the DarkSpell page on the Outlaw forum, click the "Props" thread and then click "Christmas Present." You will find a link there to three pdf files containing everything you need to make and perform The Alchemist's Bane as described in your DarkSpell performance manual.

Many thanks to Vic Nadata for the technical assistance in putting these files into a downloadable format.

Happy holidays to you from me, the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come.

A Public Service Announcement:
The DarkSpell 2011 Hallowe'en Special Edition is sold out and not to be repeated. There are, however, still copies of DarkSpell available for those of you with visions of a distinctly non-sugarplum variety dancing in your heads.
Message: Posted by: Seth speaks (Dec 15, 2011 1:37pm)
I received my DarkSpell recently (#12 of 13) and it is truly magnificent. However, I fear that some may think it is not worth it to order now that there are no more Hallowe'en Special Editions available. I just want to put those fears to rest.

Let me assure you that, while the extra mold and wax are nice touches, they are really quite minor. Seriously. In fact, I decided that mine looked better without the wax so I scraped it off. The book itself, with the instructions, is an absolute treasure, and already has superior aging. (I have wanted a gimmicked Gr1m01re for the longest time, and this baby is the creme de la creme!)

Whether you are a practicing Bizarrist, a mentalist, or simply a curator of haunted oddities, you will find wonders in this book. From being able to divine from the start which spell the participant chose, to actually having magic happen from the book in the person's hands, to actually doing impressive readings, telepathy, spirit evocation, white and black magic... this thing is a powerhouse, and its appearance alone is a trance induction in itself! The Elizabethan language, spellings, fonts, and colored illuminated letters are really top notch! You even get a refresher on roman numerals, which is helpful. Keep in mind, the Professor's listing of the Table of Contents, above, is not exhaustive--he lists the general headings, but most chapters have several more specific spells in each category (some are downright shocking, and feel VERY authentic).

Additionally, the bonus routine and props for "The Alchemist's Bane" are tremendously good, and are given away in the DarkSpell Forum--FREE (for how long, I don't know). Insane...

I have several books from Outlaw, and this is my favorite, hands down! I want to urge anyone who may be on the fence to go ahead and take the plunge--it is not nearly as expensive as some Outlaw products, and this is a limited run, NEVER to return once sold out.

To reiterate: the Special Edition touches were appreciated, but not strictly necessary, and really didn't add that much, as the tome is already near perfect as is. There are still many things you can do yourself to add to the illusion of being old and well-used (again, see the forum).

This baby exudes beauty and power...

Seth

Dr Rob, I hope you receive it in time for Christmas. Prof B C has previously shipped items to me in the UK on three separate occasions, and I've never had a problem. He's always posted them quickly, regardless of his work schedule, and they've usually arrived around eight days later.

Seth, that's an awesome review. I'm lucky enough to own both a standard version and a Hallowe'en edition. They're both superb.
Message: Posted by: TH1 (Dec 16, 2011 12:13pm)
Agree with Seth, if you decided not to order because you missed out on the special Halloween Edition, you will miss out on something very special. I was aware of the book, but did didn't appreciate what it did until forum buzz bubbled up again due to the Halloween edition offering (nice marketing ploy Prof BC!). This caused me to go re-read the description on the Outlaw Effects site. I finally "got it", and promptly ordered my Halloween edition (copy #10). But, even without the extra aging-aesthetics touches by Prof. BC, the original is still a beautiful prop. And with a modicum of prop aging skills, you can readily age your own copy if desired.

Here is something useful for all you Darkspell owners. I came across this while searching the auction site that shall not be named- seeking reference works for the Elizabethan author of the dark book- who by his very nature remains nameless on this board. (But you know who he is.) These are decals- available in 12, 9, and 6 inch sizes at a reasonable price. Tried to post this on the Outlaw Forum- but it appears to be down. Bought a few to put on props, my car- my enemies front doors- etc. . .

I Love the outlook and the "method" is good
But I want someone who already perform help a bit.

as audience keep asking me whats next,
they can't read the book well,
Because some words they don't know the meaning.

And I wanna know most of you who own DS use for opening, ending
Or middle last a long Routine?

Message: Posted by: Isper (Jan 5, 2012 7:12pm)
With DS you are the guide to the book if there are language issues. First let the participant read the whole spell once. Then have the read it again doing what is required. Let them get as far as they can on their own. When they ask what is next, or say they do not understand, then help them.

There are two ways I help. One is to have them read the passage outloud and I interpret the meaning and explain what to do next. Or I look at the book while they are still holding it, read the section, usually outloud, then explain what to do and have them do it.

In my opinion, it is important to go ahead and let them struggle a bit and do as much as they can because it enhances their experience. Besides, I tell them that it is okay, even expected that they do not understand everything, because how many people in modern times are used to casting spells? Besides us, that is.

I have been working on ideas for an seance evening, and one thing I am considering is employing my darkspell. Not so much as a presentational piece, but subtlely. something along the lines of as everyone is arriving, going around the room acclimating to the atmosphere, checking out other props set up, ect. I am busy at the performance table reciting protection charms from the book to "ensure everyones safety for the evening".

has anyone tried anything similar?

WitchDoctor,

I use DS here in Japan with people who sometimes have very little English ability. My approach has been to show them the book, talk about it and explain the types of spells then ask them what kind of spell they would like to try. For example if they choose protection show them a few of the various options within the book and have them choose one. Give the book to them and tell them to follow do what it says in the book. If they cannot understand it, then read it outloud then "interpret" what it says into their native language and have them do the actions required.

Hope this gives you enough to work with, if not, then PM me and we can exchange ideas in more detail privately.

This is an excellent approach. Because DarkSpell is written so everything happens in the spectator's hands (and the spectator makes all the decisions) the magic remains powerful even if you have to read/interpret the spells to the spectator. In fact, I suspect it will play even stronger as a foreign language set of spells as that would feel more mysterious to the audience. You become a facilitator in your show and the very foreignness of the language becomes your misdirection.

Heck, I should have written it in Latin and provided translations to everyone for performance.

Please advise - I just received my copy of Dark Spell. I received the book and a certificate of authenticity. Were there not supposed to be instructions as well?
Message: Posted by: PROF BC (Apr 30, 2012 2:22pm)
Rick is supposed to email the .pdf instructions/performance manual as soon as you make your purchase. Just email him a reminder, and I'm sure he'll get it back to you by return post.

Sorry for the muddle.

Lol.
I don't think it's possible without the manual.
Incredible prop. An entire spooky act in a little bitty package.

I purchased The Darkspell cabinet in Jan. it came without keys. Been chasing Outlaw up since. Feel a bit let down with this one. I'm VERY polite. Obviously too polite.
Message: Posted by: Godzilla (Apr 30, 2012 9:44pm)
Did she come with no Lock and no keys ? Or,no keys, and you have a Locked cabinet?

Why I ask,I ordered a Lock(not Outlaw)and the keys slipped out somewhere in the shipping process, through the package!

Luuuuucy, you gota some 'splainin' to doooo. So what did you say? Are there still Witchcraft laws on the books where you are? I'm actually serious about that because they're still in effect in some places.
Message: Posted by: Tim Dowd (May 1, 2012 3:05pm)
The girl in customs found an old book with a certificate of authenticity... Germany likes to have a receipt attached to the outside of the package in a plastic sleeve or they are forced to open it and look inside...

Old... Authentic... Must be worth a million! 19% sales tax (MWSt) 7% import duty... Money money money... But how much was it? Let's get the guy in and go through his banking details to find out...

I explained that it is an original theatrical prop and that the value was €50 the rest was for performance rights... The 19% was dropped and I only paid the 7% import duty, but on the price I paid according to PayPal, which was Wierd because I was getting a deal for Reflections and Lillian too, which should arrive this week... Have to do it all again on Monday...

I really wish I had made the leap to performer, Then I could justify this beautiful piece
Message: Posted by: piyuyu (May 9, 2012 7:11am)
I put up a few picture of Darkspell in Instagram and my students thought I was into black magic. Given the nature of this, I think I could easily freak them out by just doing the mind reading routine that comes with the manual.

Love this.

In all of Australia . . . two. The Kiwis also have two. One each in southern Indonesia and Brazil.

Rare indeed beneath the Southern Cross!

I couldn't resist getting the cabinet along with darkspell. You will not be dissapointed!! It suits the book perfectly and can enhance your routine so much more. Prof BCs handling of the classic 7 keys to baldplate is very nice, and I love that there are no cha*g* ba*s or gaffs used.

Thanks for letting me know Prof BC! I am a little surprised but very happy, I guess there are hardly any Bizarrists in Australia!

and welcome the the Café piyuyu!

Hi MI, there aren't many of us, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view.
I'm the only one in Canberra, but that suits me as I don't have any competition to worry about :)

yes, Im in WA and I havent heard or know any other bizarrist but maybe I will post a new topic and find out if I have any other competition in my state!

Mine arrived today, number 94; sooner than I thought and to my surprise without any hassle from the customs department.

My fiancee thinks it smells funny, but what did she expect from an old manuscript?

From the preview pictures on the net I thought tthat it would be beautiful, but in reality it is simply gorgeous! It's all one can want from a Grimoire. I am looking forward on working with it.

Your happy customer

Daniel

I have an idea that involves using DS and a scrying routine before using the book.

As the spectator is turning to the page and spell the choose, you show the spec a singing bowl or simply a bowl filled with water. once you know the info and what kinda of routine they chose, you place a blank piece of paper and details of the spell materialize onto the paper (Liquify ie: words/images appear once dipped into water)

What do you think of this? Too much of a magicky feel or could play well with DS?

thanks in advance,

M.I.

It has, alas. The last one slipped into the dark recesses earlier this year.

I understand, however, that the very last DarkSpell (#100) is to be auctioned at next year's Doomsday in Whitby--you might want to check into that.

Soooo...how much would the book and box combo go for nowadays I wonder...anyone know what the one sold for on here a while back?
Message: Posted by: necroloid (Jan 5, 2013 12:57am)
I do not think you will get a premium for the box. Rick said he could make me one if I wanted it, but he was not going the keep it advertised on the site after Darkspell sold out. Actually I think he stopped advertising it before the book sold out. As for the book I have heard $300 tossed around. I know that would be the minimum I would sell mine for.
Message: Posted by: Tim Dowd (Jan 5, 2013 9:02am)
When I was looking for one recently to swap for a Phantoms... I was offered upwards of €300 but I doubt anyone would pay that... Those selling their own copy because it doesn't fit their style are happy getting their money back... Those possibly buying for investment may have to wait for a collector to show up...
