I got a new book fo an effect. I need to age the cover to make it look older. I thought about using a light sand paper...Any other ideas?

Throw it in dirt, then put it in the freezer. Hold a lighter to the cover, but don't allow it to catch fire. Just beat the darn thing to death

Coffee is the best - it wont ruin the ink on the pages - but it will turn everything brown - then let the pages dry fanned out. It wil make the book expand. (upside down - propped up like a "V")
Break the spine also with a nice crease. Blessings, |

You may find some help from this:
http://www.dragonskull.co.uk/lecture2_bs.htm There is also a site, I seem not to be able to locate, that will sell you a scent to make the book smell old, maybe someone can help?? Kevin |

I've used the coffee/tea method on books but I don't like the results. Anything wet ripples the pages and that doesn't look quite right for what I want. I have yet to find a way to age a book that doesn't trash it. I suppose you could spend big bucks on a real book but my budget won't allow for that right now.
Brother Shadow has an essay on aging props. It is full of tips. I've heard about that scent, too, Kevin. Anyone have a clue as to what it is or where to get it?

Hello all,
The scent is called Essence of Antiquity, and is avalailable (the last I've heard) through Karl Bartoni of Dragonskull (web site mentionned earlier). Also, I prefer to use strong tea instead of coffee because, well, coffee smells like coffee!!! Hope that helps, Martin |

And tea like tea
No, I don't think the coffee smell is important because it will vanish quickly. And I fooled antics seller (who are friends of mine) with this simple but effective technic. But I agree that you will have best result with the methods described in dragonskull. Unfortunatly, Essence of Antics is unavailable for months. But you can quickly had a smell to your book if you think of "what" are the origin of this flavour. If you close your book 2 week in a plastic bag with a wet soil (not too wet), you will develop mildew and odors of a book which has stayed years in a cave. If you put your book openned on the rear parcel shelf of your car for few months (turn the pages time to time), the sun will age your book. It will fragilise the pages, and give them a little yellow color. In fact, you only have to do the worst things with your book and you will obtain result. Test and test, and you will succeed.

You can also find a couple of real mildewy books, seal them up with yours and they will contaminate it.
DO NOT get mildewed books near clean books. You will never get that smell out. Also, a search in previous posts under "aged" will turn up a host of ideas. DA god it was really bugging me, but I found it... http://www.indygear.com/props/written.shtml These guys are fanatical about this stuff. Good site though. DA |

Black Artefacts (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/BlackHart/) also used to stock this "essence", I think.

I read a tip about aging paper (I tried it with thicker paper but I think it would work with a book):
Stain the paper with cold strong tea to give it a brown colour. After it has dried, dampen the paper with a 'mist spray' then sprinkle instant coffee on it. This gives little brown spots like rot. Lesault. |
