Hi All,
Just completing a prop that needs a couple of blades. Like a Zig-Zag, Mis-Made Girl, Sawing in half.....etc. type. I've built them in the past from Sheet Aluminum. Just wondering if going with Stainless Steel, or using Sheet Metal then getting it Chromed is better? What have some of you been using? Michael Berends

I have some illusions that have polished aluminum blades and some illusions that have stainless steel blades. The aluminum blades are a lot lighter but more easily scratched and nicked.
The stainless steel blade (it's a head chopper blade) weighs a ton, in comparision, but is much more durable. Besides the weight, I'm told that it is very difficult to work with stainless steel. The builder of my chopper says it take a lot to cut it and to polish it. I would recommend using aluminum because of the ease of machining it and it's light weight. I would think you would need so specialized tools to work with stainless steel, unless you're outsourcing it. I would avoid plating steel because the plating will eventually chip away unless you are very careful with it. |

Go with the aluminum. Besides you can buff those scratches out if you want to.

Definitely aluminum... much lighter to travel with. Also, much cheaper to have cut and shaped. Once it's buffed, the audience won't be able to tell the difference unless you pointed it out specifically to them.

Hi Guys,
I made them out of Aluminum. Just figured it was best to go with what I already am familiar with. I wanted to see if anyone was using anything else. Doesn't hurt to ask. Making the handles now. If anyone is interested in seeing pics of my new project? PM me and I can email you pics. It's a cross between an old school look and a new look. Looks kinda neat if you ask me. Definitely one of a kind. Not quite finished yet but it's close. Thanks, Mike
