I have been mostly into kids magic shows and a great book that helped me a lot was, David Ginn's - Professional magic for children.
I would like to get a adult, close-up and small stage show together, I was just wondering if there are any good books or DVDs on the subject? (like David's books for kids, I want something as good about adult shows) Also for a few quick impromptu tricks I here, Gregory Wilson's - On the Spot is good! Can anyone second that? Mike |

I second that. I would also recomend Bill Malone "On the loose" for some ideas on adult magic. He teaches some great effects on these four dvds, but he also speaks about how to deal with children when you are performing adult magic.

I do an adult version of my kidshow. I take away and replace some props, but the adult show also features a character change. I am not sure of any videos or DVDs or books to reccomend...you just have to make jokes or apply jokes that would be good fitted to an adult audience. You cannot treat them like children and they don't usually like the "child style" sillyness of a kidshow magician. They love to see other members of the audience involved in tricks that involve funny things...like toilet plungers, under garments (20th century shorts), cleaning products, toilet paper..strange and funny everyday objects you would find lying around.
Age sometimes determines...some old people don't like the humor you would present to a 20s-50 year old crowd...so you have to twist it a little bit more for them...hmmm, I have a show for the local AARP meeting in a couple of weeks...this should be quite fun! |

Docc Hilford, when asked after a kid's show what kind of show he does for adults, responded, "The same show I just did - only slower."
Snide answer? Possibly, but, if you have seen him work, the changes aren't all that great. Some changes in the presentation, but the magic effects stay pretty much the same for him. Some kid's show entertainers, however, could not possibly do that s their material is geared specifically for children. Let's face it, the poorly drawn cartoon rabbits on most versions of Hippity-Hop Rabbits simply will not work for an adult audience without some really serious thought as to the presentation! However, I have seen some magicians take some pretty "childish" tricks and make them play very big for adult audiences. It's not the trick - it's the combination of the trick and the performer, after all! Lee Darrow, C.H.

I agree. Adults have always loved the adult version of my kidshow (I do remove a few tricks and add a couple)because the humor changes and there is also an entirely different ending (character change and routine) that leaves them laughing so much they have to go to the bathroom after the show.
I do not think it would be too good to do an adult show based off of kids routines and magic...they would probably feel as if you are performing for the wrong crowd... |

I agree once again with Mr. Darrow. I consider my show to be suitable for all ages. I have had kids and adults in my audience at the same show and had favourable responses from both groups. The perspective of their feedback was sometimes different, of course. I believe universality is important.
