I'm working on a "new" version of the old Chinese Sticks routine. Since they look like fishing poles, I've decided that's what they shall be and I'll have a kid from the audience help me hook a short 3 inch line to the end of two "fishpoles." Then the routine will start, with one line becoming long, and then back and forth, to both lines being long "by accident" and when both lines snap up for the finale, there will actually be a goldfish (made of cloth) attached to the end of each line.
I think I'd like to then take each obviously fake cloth goldfish and drop it into a bowl where it turns into a live goldfish, but I haven't got that part all worked out yet.

OK, I've got a new idea with its roots in the past. I'm releasing the Appearing Goldfish as a separate article in The Wizards' Journal (#6) because it doesn't need to necessarily be tied to the Chinese Fish Sticks (as I'm calling them). The effect is that a clear glass bowl is shown and filled with clear water from a clear glass pitcher. Drop in the cloth goldfish from the Chinese Fish Sticks and they instantly and visibly turn to live fish. Alternately, you can do this to just produce two or more live goldfish in a clear glass (or plastic) goldfish bowl. It can also be used with a goldfish bowl production, producing just the clear bowl with water and having the goldfish appear visibly as a finale. The fish don't seem to mind the process at all. The props are easy to make and cost me less than $5 total.
