Actually I just realized there are several versions of magic kits. We got the "My first magic kit" which is why it's full of stinky plastic junk. The one I thought we were getting was "Street Feats" but at this point, I don't really care anymore.

That is crazy. Anything for a buck I guess.

I hate the kits with the thumb tips in them. I guess laymen know about the tip. It is all how you use it. We can always change our applications of the prop.

For many layman, Blaine was their first exposure to "street magic". They had seen the theatrics and illusions of Copperfield and Worlds Greatest Magic for years but then along comes this new guy showing them a different style of magic altogether. It's not a bad thing. Anyone can buy secrets, that's not secret. For someone to buy a magic kit that contains tools of the trade and secrets is as easy as going to Toys R Us. What difference does it make whether they bought the "secret" from a magic dealer or Kaybee Toys?

We got a new kit in. It's called the "ESP Mind reading" magic kit. Still looking out for the street feats, I don't know if and/or when we'll be getting those in.

We just got the Street Feats set in! I gotta say, my first impression is that it actually looks like a decent magic set! I haven't been able to open it up yet and peek inside, but I will very soon. It had the "card tattoo" revalation, and spongeballs (2 inch) and some other stuff I didn't get to look at yet. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

A whole lot of similar kits have come out in the bigger department stores across the U.K. Most are an odd combination of kids magic sponge ball type stuff combined with the Blaine 'live flies' routines.
Not sure if this is a good thing or not but they are everywhere this xmas. |

Why do they have to realese this stuff to the public its making magic harder on us.I mean I know its nothing that big in the kit but look at how much better there getting.Im sure soon peole will be saying oh you just forced that card on me.IMO,i don't like this new magic exposure.
they thought it was impossible until they met me.

Neither do i, the author is someone 'Berglas' obvious not David. not sure if there is a family connection though.
'sides calling anything a 'kit' places magic into the realm of science. |

Perhaps you should be so accomidating for the next up and coming magician. I once went to a hobby show only to find someone selling magic kits. The kit included the TT and some card tricks. I bought it for $15 and magically became a magician. I since have bought some really cool tricks. I am totally happy with my new found hobby. And I thank the gentleman that offered to provide me with an opportunity to see if I liked it or not. Got to tell you that the TT was the best piece of magic ever included in any kit. Hopefully David Blaines includes something equally as impressive. People, we have to be more positive in our posts. So far this forum is filled with a lot of complainers and very critical posters. Let's all thank the magic providers for making it so popular lately. There was a low in magic for sometime before Blaine came out and now it can only make it better that he is providing people with opportunities to get into the business of conjuring. Not everyone is going to take it to the next level, nor is everyone going to buy it and perfect it. But there are some out there that will go for it and end up on TV - ala DB and CA. Power to the people. |

I dunno fourwinds. I think stuff of this caliber given to just any old person can kinda take the spark out of a good thing. Sure you'll get a few kids who take it seriously. But mostly it will get played with like any other toy and then tossed aside like the ninja turtle action figures of yesteryear.
If it werent mass produced and given to every 6 year old on the planet...i bet you could blow some people away with the ball and vase, ya know. I saw this kit at the mall yesterday, and there is some pretty good stuff in it. Stuff that most of us probably use day to day. To me it would be a let down if I wanted to entertain a group of kids with my strongest regular material, and they all said...oohhh that's the trick where you do such and such...my friend knows someone who has that. I say....keep it in the family, but I suppose it's a little late. |

I take the opposite tack. Give the kids a kit with some really good stuff and maybe they'll have a better appreciation for magic. I've got kids who have received the cheapo sets and they barely touched them. I think it was Jim Steinmeyer who said that one has to know a little about magic to really appreciate it. It is the hobbyists and those slightly in the know who make up a sizable part of live audiences and TV specials.
Fumbling with a crappy magic set is not a prerequisite in magic! |

My opinion is that to many people are getting into magic or at least looking up a few tricks. Then they attomaticley assume they can do magic.Do you guys think the same thing?

I dunno...There is some pretty strong magic in the "cheapo sets" They have just been handed out and about so much that it has lost its luster and appeal. When a kid gets a magic set, he wants to know how to do real magic, not the slick little secret behind the trick. That is why magic sets get tossed away. "oh that's how you do it...thats stupid....back to watching cartoons."
It does not if its "good stuff." The stuff you are referring to as the "cheapo" stuff, is probably better stuff. Its just fallen into the wrong hands so to speak. |
