I am more of a magician by trade but a very comfortable with clubs and balls. I would like to add a fire poi segment to a magic act that I am working on and before I bought anything, I wanted to get advice from experiences and recomendations. What is the best way to approach this? What worked best for you?
Also are there any online clips of the Fire Poi that I could take a gander at.? Thanks in advance for the suggestions. Jared |

You can find out everything you want to know about poi at http://www.homeofpoi.com including clips. As for performing with fire poi I can see a number of problems if inside.
a) Will the building fire alarms be turned off? I've been at a magic convention where the fire act set off the alarms. b) Is there anywhere you can get rid of excess fuel? Poi are especially bad at spraying burning fuel around a room. c) Do you have specific fire insurance? You might get away with a bit of fire in an otherwise safe magic act but with fire props you won't. d) Have you considered what to do when your fire poi manage to clip themselves together in the middle of your show? This has happened to me, I had to move on to the next trick and apologise to my audience as the poi were too hot to unclip. Other things you might want to consider are whether you use poi that have cables or chains, the tightness of your clothing, how the poi fit with the rest of your act (which I'm sure you've done) and there is probably more. I knew a man who kept saying "pliers, pincers, scissors". He was speaking in tongs.

I do not do Poi but I do juggle torches.
I never do them in doors I use only smokeless, and odorless fuel, with a low flash point You want to have an orange flame You also need to know how long the flame will last You should know how high the flame will be in order to keep hair on your arms You must have liability insurance OK it with the customer to make sure he will like it There are many fire safety rules that you should know before you start, these are just a few. I actually advise against using poi...I took the time to learn and have regreted it ever since...Poi acts that I've seen and even performed tend to get really redundent, and people lose interest really fast old, and young it doesn't matter.
Also I might add that lots of hippies do poi, and they somtimes ruin things for other people. please learn somthing better, like meteors.

I hope the meteors thing was sarcasem as most non jugglers never spot the difrence.
follow all the same safty rules you do when you do toarches. plus alwase have some one you trust with your life act as fire safty. the fire is staped to you and the chain/cabil will get hot, a second set of hands is very important. plus this person can get rid of the still hot props quickly so you can go on with your act. like all other juggling tricks don't over do it, yes YOU are having fun, but the show is for the audince not you. If you ever want to see some realy bord people? take some non-jugglers to an ija show! The problem with the hippies, dead heads, and the like is some of them are realy good and can show you up if you are not, plus thay are doing it for free so why pay for it? I love the vairous spining arts, wether it's clubs, poi, or meteors (my latest obsetion since aug.) keep pushing the limits learn every trick you can, make some up, with out that there is no point. oh yea, have fun. oh by the way, you should pick up poi that you can switch out the wick for balls, glow sticks or whatever so you don't beet your self with the dirty wicks while lernig new stuff.

I just started learning poi. I am finding it fun. I would suggest getting the fuzzy poi from homeofpoi.com. They don't hurt when you hit yourself. I wouldn't start with fire. Just like torches, you start with clubs, perfect that, and then move up to fire.
