I'm pretty new in coin magic, and I'm currently working in the classic palm.
I was wondering if you guys file your coins for better grip. I filed a few half dollars, and I like them better. But I don't know if that's the best way to learn. Advices will be appreciated. David R. |

David, welcome to the Magic Café and to the frustration of learning new skills.
When I first started palming coins I tried everything I could think of to improve the grip like filing edges, rubbing rossin on the hands, and even using magicians wax on the edges of the coins. Anything like this is only a crutch and in the long run is not your solution. The classic palm is something that takes a LOT of time. Over time, your hand will develop the muscles and ridges needed to palm the coin. The condition of your hands are also a factor. Everyone is different, for me, the process classic palming took years rather than weeks. I found it useful experiment with different sized coins. Your mileage will vary. How much should you practice? David Roth has a wonderful story about that... if you play the piano, you should try palming a coin while you play. You should palm a coin constantly, 24/7, as you go about your daily routine. Keep in mind, the ability to classic palm a coin is not necessary to perform great coin magic. As you start out, don't underestmate the power of the basic finger palm. However, having a natural classic palm in your arsenal of sleights is a great asset. It's well worth the time and frustration required to learn. Also, as suggested, If you do a search, you will find a ton of practical advice on the subject. Good luck! have fun.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Rich said it perfectly, over time you will adjust to the feel, I wouldnt recommend filing, as you will get used to that, even if it is harder, it is worth it.

One thing to remember about classic palming is that it's meant to be used with cover. Are there magician's who have perfect classic palms? Yes! I am one of them, or rather used to be(broken hand)
In practice the hand that has classic palmed an item is normally set to using something else, i.e. a wand, reaching for something else. Trying to pull off a classic palm with a 'dead' hand is tough and requires lots of practice and well used mis-direction. If you do practice by palming a coin during everyday activities, I highly suggest getting 1964 silver halves(or older). The silver coins won't leave the nice green stain on your hands like the more current ones. My own personal opinion on CP'ing is this though. Everyone says to experiment with different sized coins until you find the one that works...which is great, but once you master CP'ing one sizse coin, work on other sizes. The CP is very useful sleight that can be used with so many objects for a simple vanish. I can CP coins from dimes to dollars as well as other objects like sugar packets, spoon bowls, batteries...etc. my two cents...
I'm moving back to Vegas.....anyone there that can help me out in getting adjusted to the Sin City again!?!!?

Try to palming more coins. If you get use to 3 or 4 coin in palm, you will find class palming one coin is so easy. That's the way I have been practising.

Great! Now Rich (Mediocre the Great) is going to start believing his own press and will be tough to live with!
I remember watching him down on his hands and knees, groping around in the dark under the seats in the Palace of Mystery at the Castle, when he would show me a coin effect he was just learning and fling a coin (or three) into the inky blackness while trying to perfect his classic palm. That was a few years ago. He fooled the CRAP out of me a couple of weeks ago. His advice works! He's a master palmer. I couldn't palm a Post-it Note with the sticky part against my skin! Listen to your Uncle Mediocre. |
