'Magician: Have Rabbit, Will Travel.'
I loved Doug Henning but he was anti-gambling. For a while, Henning threatened to take Veda Land away from Niagara Falls unless the city fathers refused to allow a gambling casino to open in town. Gambling, said Doug, always brings a plague of hookers. When the city refused to bar gambling, Doug changed his mind. After all, could not Veda Land’s Vedic flyers counter the evils of betting and prostitution by their sidhi powers? “Darkness,” declared Doug, “cannot show itself in the face of light.”

No mystery, I have my PM's turned off for various reasons, so if somebody wants to chat privately with me, I have to fist send them a PM in order that they can respond.
It's a setting in the Café menu, and works exactly as the Café management intended. |

The Mimesis website is quite impressive when you realize that it's the creative output of a single individual. 80% of the site is his creations. |

I've received Shawn's book and associated gaffs, and will begin reading it this weekend.
I will say, that upon opening the package and viewing the items contained within, I experienced that moment of "why on earth couldn't I have thought of that". Up front, it's obvious that most will not have experienced this type of tactile work put into playing cards before. Even before cracking the cover of the book, the gaffs make it apparent that Shawn has taken the pegger, and black-line-work in a very new direction. The thinking and execution is impressive. Before anybody asks, like the punch and black line work, this is useable in both magic and marking cards at a gambling table. Book review to follow. |

I've performed the BUMPING THE BLINDFOLD routine (from Shawn's book) at our magic club and fooled "those in the know" concerning punch work. Our local "expert" on the subject stated he was caught off guard because he's never seen a pegger "built" on a single playing card and used in an impromptu manner.

Purchasing Shawn's book will answer any questions you might have as to the mechanics behind his ideas.
No need to attempt to grind out details of his work here in the forum. |

In a nutshell, this is the most comprehensive single volume on punch work I've ever read.
I've got them all, written and DVD's, and none are as well researched, or as well written as Shawn's effort. References to tools I'd not previously thought of, and a fleshed out history of where punch work actually came from make for interesting reading. New techniques and materials are brought to light (nothing so pedestrian as "glue"). Expanded thinking on some obscure Marlo ideas on preparing punched cards as well. Shawn examines the concept of impromptu punch work as a breather card, a concept with many applications. A powerful concept using different sized blisters in the same deck is noted as well. The author also examines new methods of putting in edge work and black line type work, using materials only recently brought to market. If I was inexperienced and seeking one book on punch work, this would be the book. Not everything in the book is "new" to those who may have delved into punch work over a period of years, but I suspect that group is very small, and even then there will be items of interest in the book for knowledgable readers. Shawn's not marketing this book as a gambling and hustling work, nor is he detailing what "to do" with punch work at a gaming table. It's focused on the punch and magic, but in that process he quite simply teaches you all about the punch and punch work. Great book for those looking to discover the punch, or for those with enough interest already and whom are looking for new ideas and concepts as they relate to punch work. |

Thanks Artie.
Nice review. Shawn seems to be a real student of the art and based upon your review, this book should certainly benefit those who are interested in "punch" work in its difference forms and in its many applications. I can personally attest to the fact that the "concept" behind the punch, used with different applications have made a great deal of money in professional gambling. The old Walter Scott punch and second deal combination went out with high button shoes in that venue. |

I echo Artie’s review of Shawn’s book. Artie, you should post your review on the Book Review forum.
This exceptional book exceeded my expectations in all aspects. When I first opened the book (maybe priced way too low for one with colored illustrations), I was transported back to that “magical place” as a “fresh” student of magic, and a place that I thought was lost over the years. What price would you pay for a book that rekindles your interest in magic? For me, the book was broad, detailed, and loaded with creativity throughout – it even had me laughing because Mr. Evans’ has a wicked sense of humor as revealed by the ruminations of Riku, Sora, and Hero |
