About 10 years ago, a magician named Flash, from the old "Sun Magic" store in Phoenix, taught me this trick. I have never seen anybody else do it, but would like to find the origins of this fun effect.
I added the "sobriety test" patter. It is also the only sleight of hand trick I will attempt after 2 glasses of wine. Effect: The magician takes any 4 cards from a deck, and distributes packets of 4 cards to several volunteers, asking them to try to duplicate some simple moves. The 4 cards start face down, then 4 moves are done: 1)top card turned face up and put on bottom, 2)same as 1, 3)entire packet turned upside down, 4)bottom card turned face down and replaced on bottom. The magician does this 3 times in a row, each time more slowly, and always ends up with 4 face-down cards. None of the volunteers ever can show 4 face-down cards. Have you seen this, or something similar, published before? Thanks, Rod. |

See "Vernon's Variant", pg. 173 of "Ultimate Secrets of Card Magic" by Lewis Ganson.

Jim, thank you so much. The fact it is a Dai Vernon creation just made my day.

This is a fantastic effect and I do it all the time. With only 1 deck of cards, you can have up to 12 other people following along, all trying to "do as I do," and they can't. It's a riot!

I just read "Vernon's Variant": it has 2 phases. What I was taught has a 3rd phase, with a nice addition. Please PM me if interested.

Vernon's Variant begs the question, variant of what?
It's a variant of the U.F. Grant effect "U Can't Do As I Do" from about 1920. Vernon added an Elmsley count and changed some handling. This shows up later in life (1991) as "The Instant Incompetency IQ Test" by Paul Harris as well, but done with business cards insted of playing cards. Paul Hallas's book "Small But Deadly" published by H&R MagicBooks is a great source for packet trick history. |

Silverking: great info and great recommendation. I like the idea of using business cards. Thanks!

Which Paul Harris book has his version of this?

Paul Harris's effect "Instant Incompetency IQ Test" can be found in his 3rd book, "Secrets of the Astonishing Executive."
This was authored by Bill Herz with Paul Harris, @1991. The ISBN number is 0-380-76244-7 and published (in paperback) by Avon Books. It is long out of print, but can be found through used book dealers, etc... You can also find several used copies on http://www.Amazon.com. Good luck...there are some really good effects in this book that are long forgotten by most. |

It's also in AOA Book #3

I looked up Paul Harris's version in AoA #3 p265. It has a great plot, but it is not an impromptu trick: it uses a gaff.

Bernard Billis also has a handeling for this effect. I saw him do it on one of his instructional videos in French over 13 years ago.

Can someone tell me the name of the Blue Crown card trick that is similar to this? Its a do as I do that uses 4 cards I believe. It might even be the same effect, but I'm not 100% sure bout' that. Thanks. db

It's definitely not something I would do at a paid gig as there are much stronger effects out there, maybe if it had a better finish or kicker at the end it would be more workable but for me it's just something I might do for mates down the pub and nothing more.
