Brilliant idea, Hagerman!
Okay, I'm clearing the decks for a 10 hour Buster Keaton marathon this weekend! If there's anyone I'd like to think like, it's Buster. And I've probably got about 10 hours worth of Roberto Benigni at hand as well, so I'll pencil that in for next weekend! Hey, if you're going to ride on the shoulders of giants, might as well ride on the tallest around! Who better to learn the noble art of comedy from than Buster and his modern day successor, Roberto? Cheers from Australia, Jason |

I envy you Hansen. I wish I had that much access to Buster and Roberto. Just don't go off and start tearing up the front of you house.
Found these threads on sight gags. There are some good ones here. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=24 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......;forum=6 Here's a bunch of Buster Keaton clips: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu......h=Search |

Great, great stuff in there. Thanks for the links, Hagerman. I'm going to have to use that search engine more, I think.
Yes, I regularly trawl through YouTube in the hunt for comedy gems myself. What an incredible (if highly illegal in terms of the amazing copyright violations that go on over there!) resource it is for the student of comedy. As for Buster material, a little bird told me you can pick up "The Art of Buster Keaton" 11 DVD box set on Ebay for around 20 bucks. Is it a nasty cheapie from China? You betcha! Does it play? Yes sireee! Is it right? Well, my grandma always use to say that in order to determine the actual characteristics of right and wrong and justice and injustice you should..............etc etc etc |

Don't think anyone's mentioned Harold Lloyd yet. Haven't seen anything of his for many years. Any thoughts?

Ha,I was just about to mention Harold Lloyd. I used to love his stuff when I was a kid. I only found 2 Youtube clips of Mr Lloyd (I looked after looking through the Keaton clips then came back here to mention him).
I'd love to say W.C. Fields but in a lot of his films I felt you didn't see enough of the skills you always heard him accredited with apart from the famous pool scene (but I think that was in a cameo rather than one of his own films) George |

Ah, yes, Harold Lloyd ... another genius! His movie "Speedy" is one of my all-time favourites. Good call Mike and George!
I often think how fortunate we are to live in an age where we have such incredible access (DVDs, internet) to comedic masters and their art. These are the good old days! |

How could we forget Harold? Like a lot of these masters, Harold use to be a magician. I believe he published a one handed card trick somewhere. He blew a couple of fingers off his right hand in a stunt.

Yep- the "stunt" was actually a publicity photo of him lighting a cigarette with what he thought was a fake bomb, but it actually exploded and removed some of his fingers (so I guess it wasn't fake, afterall).
I love all of the people mentioned, and have also been a longtime fan of Jacques Tati and his films - his humor and physical comedy is brilliant.

There's a scene in Jacques Tati's "Mr Hulot's Holiday" that literally had me rolling on the floor and my wife crying tears of mirth!
I won't say what happens in the scene, because as we all know, without the surprise there's nothing. Let's just say this film is highly recommended! What a fun thread this has turned out to be! Cheers all, Jason |

Another person to look into would be Lee Evans. He mixes stand-up with visual/slapstick comedy and is one of the most successfull UK comedians.

Check out Paul Romhany as he performs as Charlie Chaplin. All silent visual comedy magic. From reading his website he does a full evening show with this!
