I posted a question such as this at another forum quite some time back but there are many new people participating and I would like to start it again.



Professor’s Nightmare -- what are your favorite (or not so favorite) story lines?



I performed it at a NASA Chili Cookoff where my department had a booth.



I showed the three ropes and said they represented



The Required Work from NASA - Long

The manpower at NASA - Medium

The budget at NASA - Short



Try as they may NASA could never get the project to completion so they turned it over to a contractor (my company, of course). Then I put on the move to make them all equal and comment that the contractors always come through. My Vice-president was impressed.



Now I know that some will say that the ropes should not represent anything other than long-stringy things but what are your ideas?

I think whatever presentation you are most comfortable with is what counts.



Also, depending on the audience, one type of story line might be better than another.



For instance, during a gospel routine, the three ropes could represent The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost.

For use with white rope:



"The rope is white. If it were green, it could be a viper. If it were black, it could be a -- vindshield viper!"



It just gets worse and worse, doesn't it?

There is a Gospel patter that shows how all
the different ropes (people) are the same in the eyes of God. There is another that says all sins large and small are actually the same.
Steve's Trinity explanation is very good as well.

I'll type as soon as I'm through groaning from Peter's puns! I for one love 'em!
The nice thing about a pun is it automatically gives you a beat or moment (what you do in that moment is your business).
My favorite PN routine is James Lewis'. It makes sense from start to finish. It involves being hypnotised. I use it at very close range.

no, verse and verse....

When I was more of an acrobat I used to introduce the long one as a skipping rope. And skip a couple of times. Then produce the medium one and say (for kids!) "This is the one I used when I was a little girl..." and jump through it (fairly impressive).

Then I'd pause, pull out the small (6") one and say, "and when I was a baby..." After the laugh I would do a little build up and jump through it without letting go...a nice stunt when I could still do it! I liked mixing up juggling, acro and magic - to keep them guessing on what would happen next.

I actually use three very long fishing worms, and tell people to imagine that they're ropes!
