Can flash paper be held in the hand on ignition? Is it dangerous?

Of course it is dangerous! People ignite flash paper in the open hand while keeping the hand perfectly flat but I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah. I use flash paper and I ALWAYS drop the paper as it burns so fast it looks cooler in the air and more magical. But if you are going to burn it in your hand, which is a bad idea, do it on the back of your hand as it is more unlikely you will get burned than burning it on the palm, as it is tougher skin.

Be careful when holding the burning flashpaper near a prop, such as a silk or especially spring flowers. Boy, did I get a big surprise!

You can hold a small edge of the paper in your fingers as it burns. It burns so fast that the small part will not hurt you. Sometimes, the part that you hold (small edge) doesn't even ignite and you are completely safe. Just try not to ignite FP in your closed hand.

Why not?

By having your hand closed around the flash paper, you are not allowing the heat to escape. You can severely burn yourself this way. I have a friend who suffered 3rd degree burns to his hands doing this. His magic suffered for a while as a result. Play it safe, and be careful.

Why would you want to burn flash paper in your closed hand anyway, without a TT? I don't think burning it in your open palm is very wise either. Not much point to it except to show off your ability to tolerate what seems like a large flame. Still, since it's only momentary, even laymen know that it probably didn't hurt much. I recommend fire alarm if you're into this sort of thing. I think it's marketed by Magic Max. You hold a ball of fire in your hand and proceed to put it on your tongue and swallow it. I've done it several times, but somehow don't quite get the satisfaction I thought I would from it since people just assume that it's all an illusion.

Well, you can throw the paper up immediately after you ignite it. It looks like it is on your hand as the flame is pretty big.

I now use it towards the end of my routine after most of my fire stuff is out of the way. The audience's minds seem to be more open to it and react better. And back to the topic, I have never had any problems burning flash paper in my open hand, but a few of my friends who are not blessed with my tough palms have had minor burns. I've never dreamed of burning flash paper in a closed hand. There's no reason for a start. The only effects that I even come close to that involve a tt.

I use Flash Paper in a mentalism routine.
I have someone freely select a forced card. Then I try to read his mind. I find it a tough read, so I have him place a piece of tissue paper to his forehead to get a psychometry read. I then have him crumple the paper into a tiny ball. The ball is placed in my palm and I ignite it. I then look into my palm as if reading the ashes and tell him the card. The way I keep from getting burned is when I ignite the paper, I begin dropping my hand so the flash paper is actually burning just above my hand not on it. When the paper is out I close my hand and it looks like the paper burned in my hand. I have never been burnt this way and it looks great. I use a half piece of flash paper from a flash pad. Any larger and the flame lasts to long. Try it with a quarter piece first to get the movement down. Regards, Brady |

As mentioned above, the FP thrown into the air is more dramatic and spectacular, IMO.
Another tip is to crumple the FP in the form of a stick. You hold it between the fingers at one end and now you have a sort of a fuse. When the flame reaches the last part of the FP near your hand, let it go. Most of it will burn in your hand. Note: We are speaking of a couple seconds here before the flame reaches your hand. Ivan
