I'm trying to put together a stage manipulation routine, with Topas as my main influence. He uses the song "Hello" by the Cars. This made me curious, what are the procedures to getting the rights to use a song in your show? I'd love to be able to use "Party Man" by Prince.
Thanks. N!H

Often the venue is responsible for paying ASCAP and BMI dues. If they have live bands, or TV's in the bar or restaurant, then they are probably paying royalties, and you would not have to. Theatres will often pay these fees as well. Ask the venue..

Yes, at times your venue has a blanket contract to cover your music,
but that is NOT all the time, and it’s best to be safe and legal. You don’t want to have to rethink your piece before an important gig, and private events are rarely covered with music permissions. You should always use original or royalty-free music, or own the rights for commercial music you use. It’s only fair, and it’s best to work with integrity. It may mean using your “plan B” choice but that’s life. Magically, Walt |

To get all useful informations about music, I suggest you to get the book "The Music and the Magic" by Gary Ouellet. The Camrand Academy sells this book and it treats everything someone needs to know using music for an act, magic or not.

Google for "royalty free music", there are loads of it available. Many sites offer free preview of the music and all of it is 'buy once - use forever'. You can create your show and perform it for as many people you like as much as you like without having to worry about paying royalty. And much of it is really very good. Highly recommended.

Getting performance rights to a hit song is a big, big money outlet. David Copperfield can pay it, the rest of us should stick royalty free music many of which can carry the same feel as a song you seek.
