Yep. I do lot's of it. I have several routines that use my iphone and mentalism
But mostly what I use it for is as a business phone where people can call me and I can utilize the push email features to stay in touch with clients whether I am in the pool, on the beach, or flying my new two hundred dollar spider-man kite. D |

Why would a mentalist need to use his cell phone to create an effect?
Is the use justified and logical? I like DT3's use of the phone much better than for any sort of "effect"

Having effects for use with your phone makes a massive amount of sense. Until a couple of weeks ago, every time I left the house I had my cell phone, my wallet, my outlaw, two pens, a pencil, some change, a deck of cards, and a boon. In my wallet I had four effects ready to go, the change was for effects, and obviously everything else was for effects. If I can do effects with everything else I carry, why not find some stuff for my phone as well? So then I found some stuff. And then I created some stuff. And then I made some routines using only the phone so that my audience only has to focus on me and my phone. Self contained. Theatrical framing.
Granted, most of the effects I performed with the phone are just transferred to the technology. It also helps out with certain negative aspects of effects. I'll post one in inner thoughts right now. It's going to be in a thread that is already going (the title of a Max Maven effect). /paul.f |

Phone tricks are great. Like I said before, I use 'em (and they always get good reactions)
I actually wrote a manuscript of several routines to do with the iPhone. Just kind of tossed it aside though because people have this preconceived notion about the abilities of the iPhone based on the commercials and I wanna be the star...I don't want to give or share the spotlight with Apple. There are exceptions though. For instance, with Paul Vigil's Sympathy routine kicker, it's very sexy when you pull the sleek and topical iPhone out of that envelope. DT3 Sent from my iPhone |

Love the fact you posted from your Iphone. LOL. I think you can justify the use of a phone or anything else by the fact that it is probably more acceptible to a laymen than say a deck of ESp cards. Its something they can relate to and possibly even have. As long as your using your own routines then the spec shouldn't be able to learn the method. Everyone uses a phone at some point. How cool would it be if you pulled a random spec off of the street and used theirs.

I just bought Mick Ayre's Bamboozlings the other day. As with all of Mick's stuff, it is packed tightly with real world gems that come from a pro who does over 1,500 shows a year.
One of the items in the book is Mick's take on "The Wizard" where you don't have to have a friend waiting by the phone. Makes the routine more accessible and Mick's take on it makes it even more entertaining. Worth the ticket price alone. DT3 |

Mark,
The two routines I mentioned above (Mick's Wizard and Paul Vigil's Sympathy) would both work swimmingly with your LG. I'm a gadget guy. I'm on my fourth different phone in a year, so it might be considered a problem at this point. ;-) Also, does your LG have a nice little camera built in? If so then stop on by Andrew Mayne's site and take a look at Ghost Vision. Hope that helps! DT3 |

I need to totally agree with Don that:
A) gadgets are kewl B) magicians can have a LOT of fun with them in the right setting My friends have labeld me an uber-geek... at first, not kewl... now I love it! Having been a graphic designer, marketing producer / consultant, and a magician... I immediately jumped on these type of gadgets. As I own an iPod touch 8gb (iPhones are not yet in our market... gggrrrrr) I have to say I'm partial to just how kewl this device is. DISCLAIMER ALERT: I'm the co-creator of the Touch Tricks series (www.TouchTricks.com) ... we released Volume 1 of the series about 2 weeks ago now and have been VERY happy with the inital feedback we've been getting. Each volume in the series has 4 compete effects included. I love seeing what our community is coming up with... Jason's "iKnow" rocks!! (just got the DVD last week) Don... would love to chat more! There are many programs that I have developed for the Windows Mobile environment. I also use the game Master Of Illusion for the Nintendo DS which has some really good virtual illusions for mental routines big or small.
Overall, I consider these to be just software props because it really is about how they are presented otherwise they can be seen to be like electronic puzzles and toys that doesn't require a performer. |
