Anybody have any plans/ideas for making a nice Change Bag?
I've got some odd shaped smaller pieces of nice wood (walnut, oak, mahogany) that are about Change Bag size, and I guess the only Real problem would be the mechanism. I've got some ideas on it, but it's always easier if someone has already worked the bugs out, So... Anybody ever tried this? Thanks Steve zzz |

I know this is not the answer you want but for the price they normally cost, I think that you will be more satisfied if you buy one. If you don't like it - I don't - you can spend your efforts in transforming it.
I wouldn't try to make one myself - it is too difficult (at least for me)

I have to agree with Rui. Making a change bag from scratch would seem to be a lot of effort to try to make something that is relatively inexpensive to begin with.
I bought a cheaply-made(and cheap $)zippered double change bag a few years ago. I took it apart and rebuilt it into a quality product. Would suggest you try that route before first. At least you would have templates for any part you wish to rebuild or if you still wish to build a new one .

Yeah, the mechanism, materials used, and amount of work needed after going over it all in my mind, if I had the tools handy to do it all at once, even though I think I've got the mechanism all figured out, it would still be a bear of a project.
:wow: I will therefore gratefully take your (plural) advice, and buy one and rework it to my liking. Again: A tip o' the hat to Ruiefe & DougTee. Thanks for not letting me waste valuable time just to find out what you already knew. Thanks Steve zzz PS Could I, perhaps, persuade you to share your ideas on how you adapted yours, or new ideas that might be put to good use? Thanks Z |

I made a change bag in a wizard hat, from scratch. It worked out ok. I have learned though that a change bag in a hat really needs three compartments if you plan on putting the hat on during the routine.
It didn't take very long to do. I used the Simplicity pattern I got at Hobby Lobby, modified it to have a compartment. Good luck with it. |

That sounds like a great idea, but how did you work the mechanism? Thanks Steve zzz |

A tear-apart change bag is easy to make. All it takes is cloth, velcro and some sewing skills.

Steve,
It's simple, thanks to the space program: Velcro, and a little misdirection to do the "change". Jahun |

I like paper bags, either prepared Mark Wilson style or Tarbel style.
There another way curently posted on ALLMAGIC.COM http://allmagic.com/magicshow/stage/easybagvanish.html I've used this in a flag blendo routine I've just worked up.

I made an "ickle pickle" type zipper change bag with zipper once
without zipper instructions: black lining material 2 (sl)pieces 9.5" X 10" black lining material 1 (ll)piece 9.5" X 20" velvet or whatever outside material you want (os)2 pieces 9.5" X 10" hem one side of 9.5" edges at 1/4" fold long piece in half so is the same width as the rest...this will sound complicated but it isn't really...in the center of the long liner you will have to narrow it so it wont be sewn with the rest for about 1" (for swing of wire) fold long liner in half with rough (narrow hems to the inside)and sew 1/4" (guide for wire) also makes it look same from both sides..no rough hem on one side. when the next stacking step is done hems all go same direction. lay (sl) with rough hem up lay on top of that (os) rough hem down (this will put rough hems out off sifgt when sewn/ (os) with rough hem up (sl) with rough hem down on top of all folded over piece sew around 3 sides with no hems at 1/4" turn bag inside out with outsides out...and sew around the top.....top edges of (os and sl) do not sew flap. (top of flap should be loose for about 1" along the sides.) this will give you a bag with no rough edges anywhere and a finnished flap. size will be approx 6"dia opening at top and about 9" deep make a wood handle with cutout hole for bag...make hole about 1/2" narrower than bag opening. make 2 rings of wood 1/2" wide with inside to match handle care fully straight holes to fit wire in one ring directly opsote each other(this will make pivot guides.glue drilled ring onto handle drill guides running with center of handle. glue the other ring onto the ring. form a stiff wire 1/2" straight then the 1/2 dia curved and then 1 1/2" straight.....feed wire through flap, put straight ends through drilled guides..long one to handle side attache the bag to the ring edge. trim is so o tack heads show.....Bend wire under handle at about 45 degree angle to give you a finger hold to turn wire to operate flap......finished. I could give you rough sketches....if you want Bryan ps....more time and effort maybe than it's worth but fun.
Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.

Well, after having a nice chafing dish break, leaving me with a lovely turned handle-spinning on the pot frame....I uses a bit of wire and old embroidery hoop as a base for the fabric, really loud color and design poly slippery stuff. the handle almost works itself with left to right movement and a slight wrist flip!
