I am not a member of the SAM, I was years ago but the local chapter more or less folded. To my point....
In a box I bought at an auction I found a booklet published by the SAM. It contains the ritual for opening, closing, initiating new members, and a broken wand. Being a Mason I was very intrigued by this, as the Masonic overtones were very strong. Is this ritual still used? Thanks |

There are at least a half dozen Assemblies I know of that perform the ritual on a regular basis. There are disscussions on offering the ceremony at the 2009 SAM convention in Buffalo.

Greetings,
There are several assemblies that use the ritual either exactly as it is in the manual or with slight adaptations to it. Assembly 8 in St. Louis always does a great job with it, you might want to ask John Apperson about it. There are assemblies that have audition requirements for joining and there are some that just require your sues and two sponsors but no initiation. Assembly #9 did all of the rituals within the memory of some of the long time members. At a recent meeting it was discussed about bringing back the ceremonites and interest was shown. I don't know if it will happen again or not.
I think it would turn off some of the members, but would be a meaningful thing for many. I hope that we do it for the folks who want to participate.

I am a past member of number 9 who just recently mover to roanoke virginia.
I went to a few meetings before I left and I can honestly say I missed the rituals I think all assemblies should use them just for the meaning they have for the members once you go thru the initiation ritual, the meeting ritual has a lot of meaning to you. |

Thanks to all for the responses.
I am a member of the Invisible Lodge (an organization of Masons that are also Magicians) and as such, have been tasked with developing a ritual. It was very interesting studying the SAM Ritual and using it as an outline for ours. Thanks again, |

I would love to take the ritual for initiation. I wonder if any assemblies close by do it ?

Hi,Pablo -
The last initiation I know of happened in '06 or '07. Northern CT Assembly #21 organized it and invited members from area clubs to take part, if they had not been initiated. Connecticut Deputy Dana Ring sewed the robes and assigned the roles. I took part because I had not been initiated. It's an interesting and worthwhie experience that made my membership in the S.A.M. more meaningful. Since Dana had the robes & script, he talked about taking the show on the road if other assemblies want it. He hasn't mentioned anyone asking. Marlene Clark National Secretary |

That would be the last initiation I knew of in the CT area. The S.A.M. Membership Committee discussed doing a ceremony at the 2009 S.A.M. Convention in Buffalo. Stay tuned. Marlene Clark SAM National Secretary |

Greetings Marlene,
glad to see you are posting regularly on here. Any chance you, as a National Officer, can let us know what's happening with SAMtalking and when that will be reopened? I am assuming as an elected officer you are a member of the "executive committee"? Thanks for any insight you can provide. SAM Members and supporters of magic,
It has been brought to my attention that there is an enthusiastic interest in the S.A.M. being expressed on this forum. It is unfortunate that time does not permit the other National Officers and me to check in on this and other independent magic forums on a regular basis. We are dedicated to the S.A.M., but we also have many obligations and a very full life outside the S.A.M., as do most of our members. It also is disappointing that there is a perception that the leadership of the S.A.M. is not encouraging and providing information or answering the concerns by some who have posted here. I can assure you that is not the reality. We are dedicated to responding to all our members who have any issues and we will answer you openly and honestly if issues are directly presented to us. It is unrealistic to believe that you would always agree with the position our team has taken, but I can assure you we take our members' concerns very seriously, and much thought, time and discussion transpires before we act in what we believe to be in the best interest of the S.A.M.and the membership. All your ideas and concerns go into the mix for consideration and are appreciated. So, may I recommend you contact me personally, or if you prefer, any other national officer (listed below) with your comments, concerns and suggestions if you wish them to be addressed. I can assure you we are listening and working together on your behalf not only on personal issues but assembly development, national programs and meeting our international obligations. We are also involved with committee issues, the current economic environment and new advances in technology. On behalf of myself, the national officers, the elected officials and the National Council, let me again thank you for your continued interest and most of all, your support of the S.A.M.. We strive to follow the fundamentals of our cabala, M-U-M, as we move into the future together joined by our interest in "magic" which inspires our "unity" and creates our "might." It is this proud history that has made the S.A.M. the oldest and most prestigious magic organization in the world. Please contact me personally (or any of the officers) as we make this journey together. Thank you again for your encouragement and support.
