Hi guys,
ok, I have a giant hotel group in europe wanting me to do shows for 16 hours per week, food, accomodation, flights and not bad money included. my problem is, they are saying they don't want me to accept any other bookings outside the hotel. what do you think? should I ask for extra money for an exclusive appearance contract? regards, geoff.

Is that other hotel's or ANY other shows? If it's other Hotel's that seems to be becoming more and more the practice...but if it's ANY other shows I wouldn't do it without a lot more money. Just me

Yes, they said there were other bars nearby and there was a danger some people could leave the hotel bar to go and see me in the other bar...cant see that happening myself....
however, I pointed out I often get asked to do private shows and kids birthday parties privately and this should not be frowned upon as far as I'm concerned. regards, geoff.

So you might agree to the restriction, but exempt all private shows that are not open to the general public. Also perhaps exempt even any shows outside of a certain radius of the hotel, where the hotel guests are unlikely to go.
BTW, how long is the term of this contract? That's also something to consider. SETH

Hi
I have said I would agree not to perform at nearby hotels or bars, however I reserve the right to perform at private birthday parties or functions. seth, the contract is from mid july, august and the start of september, so I know I'm going to be asked to do private kids parties along the way. regards, geoff.

If they want exclusivity of any kind, they should be paying a higher price. The fee depends on the level of exclusivity.
You could arrange deals like promoting them at other events (festivals) as your sponsor. |

Look at it this way,
the hotel is paying for your existance during the duration of the contract. They´re paying for your food, accomodations etc etc. Perhaps in leiu of exclusivity you´d rather pay for your own food and accomodations? Robert

The food, travel and accomodations should be paid for by the client regardless of exclusivity.

To take another tack.
Look at it this way, if you were on a Cruise Ship for those two-months, you'd be exclusive anyway, right? This could be a fantastic opportunity, to hone your work, to get publicity, to network for later. I'd even trade pay for extra PR like tv or radio interviews? And it's almost a mini-vacation. Unless your canceling gigs right and left, take the bird in the hand. I'd not ask for a lot of extra money this time 'round. But who knows, play nice, and they may make this a regular visit. There were points in my career when I've have jumped at this chance, and depending, I might again! My two-cents, Walt |

Update:
the company and I have agreed that I go to the venues on a weekly basis only and do my regular act. this gives me the opportunity to do outside work if I want. also the money involved was not too high and they wanted someone to do 6 different characters plus my own act. for the money, this was not attractive to me and being stuck in a long contract (13 weeks) with no opportunity to outside work to up the income was not too attractive. so, weekly all expenses paid appearance trips seems to be a better way. also lets me get to know how they work, without being locked in. regards, geoff.
