Here's something else that I came up with when trying to solve the problem of stand-up lapping.
It's a small hole in the table only about three inches in diameter, it is black inside and the table is black so that it will blend in. So far I have described a small blackart well, but here's the best part, it is blocked underneath, and the piece that blocks it is somehow attached to a foot pedal. So all you do is step on the pedal, and the hole will open. You can let whatever you have into the hole. This can be done totally close-up unlike other wells. You can just cover the hole with your hand while it opens then when you take your hand away the hole is gone. what do you think (don't tell me that everyone already know about this) |

Take a look in Ammar's cups and balls book. One of the last chapters shows a table that uses three of this kind of hole, plus three more that don't rise. It does not give plans, but does show the working and mechanics quite well.
I don't have the book with me so I can't credit the maker, this is all listed in the book. I hope this helps and good luck with your table.

I like the idea, if you ever make plans for the foot pedal trap door, I would be interested in seeing them...

Redstreak,
Found the book, made by the Holden's magic company, for Alphonse Delaporte. Now sits in the Mini museum of magic, Watertown Mass. This does not use a foot pedal, but uses pressure from the heel of the hand on the mat. It also uses strings to open others. If you really want to build this table, I think looking at this will save you lots of grief. Hope this helps, good luck with the job at hand.

Look in Hoffman's "Modern Magic" Chapter 17, Stage Magic. There are four different opening trap tables pictured with good enough drawings to make one from.

Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.
