I do think you should consider the area you work in. I can easily believe that magicians, even good ones, working at inexpensive eateries could hurt the business in the high priced venues. After all, we've all spent over a hundred bucks for meal and thought "this isn't as good as the lunch I had at Denny's". High priced resturants are selling appearances as often they are quality food. You need to take "snob appeal" into consideration. If you live in a part of the country where this wouldn't happen, consider youself lucky. I suspect that working a Denny's near Rodeo Drive could be a different matter. |

I don't quite understand how Hart is punching Christopher Lyle in the face. Hart offered an opinion. He went out of his way to clarify that he wasn't bashing anyone. He mentioned more than a few times that his views weren't about looking down on anyone. He offered an opinion on possibly looking at this opportunity from a different perspective. He presented his opinion in a non-threatening manner. I just don't understand why viewpoints cannot be discussed on this site without things turning into flexing contest. Maybe that's why I've limited my time here.
On topic, it matters nothing to me where anyone works or doesn't work. It matters to me where I work or don't work. Currently, I work 2 nights a week at a mid-scale family owned restaurant. I, also, work at a couple of bars (not up-scale). I once was hired by a Pizza Hut to work one night a week on a trial basis. After 3 weeks the manager wanted to make it a regular thing. I declined. It was a fun time and got paid my usual fee for this type of work; however, it wasn't the type of venue I wanted to work. That doesn't mean I think less of someone who decides to work those venues. I know performers who would look at places I work and say they wouldn't work there. Who cares? I will say that from past posts, Hart likes to stir things up. That isn't always a bad thing. I think, let me repeat, I think Hart likes to get people thinking outside the box or beyond the obvious. I don't always agree with his opinions, but he does make people think. Christopher Lyle is a pretty cool guy who I have a lot of respect for as a performer. I generally like the way he approaches matters. I am somewhat confused as to why Christopher would work this type of venue. He has stated in the past that he is annoyed at the number of prospective calls he gets from people looking to hire him on the cheap. I would imagine most of the calls he will get from this venue will continue to annoy him. I, further, understand the concept of taking whatever job necessary to provide for one's family. Noone can be knocked for having those values. Best to all, Patrick |

Denny's, you may want to investigate this some more. Our Denny's Restaurant just started to have their Kids nights on Tuesdays & Saturdays hours are from
5-7 p.m. So if you are working an upscale restaurant you could still make that gig as well from 7:30-9:30 or somewhere in there. I am not a Restaurant perfomer, per say as I am a Children & Family Entertainer first, but I am in talks with Denny's right now to perform both nights. I DO and have read many threads on performing DO's and don't's Wait Staff, etc. I have that down pat and I think I will try to use Denny's as my perfectioning of Close-up Magic in a Restaurant. Here is my dilema what should I charge Denny's. Please DO NOT say to check out other threads, as Denny's has not been discussed. I live in the highest unemployment city in the US and Denny's is what most people can afford. So to get my feet wet what should I charge? I will work a 2-hour Minimum either 1 or 2 days per week. Please PM me your rates for this type of establishment DO NOT put them on this post please keep it private. Lylemagic, I have PM'd you twice concerning pay and you have yet to respond as to what you are charging. PLease respond and anyone else who works a Denny's or similar restaurant what do you charge? Please keep in ming the High Unemployment rate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rodney

Chris,
Thanks for the heads up on the "Denny's Kids Night Out" gigs across the country. While I'm fourtunate enough to currently have a Tuesday evening gig, I'll pass this on to others that don't frequent the Café. I'm sure a magician or two in my area may be able to benefit from the heads up. I, for one, appreciate you going out of your way to do a solid for those of us fortunate enough to come across this thread. If more of us were willing to pass this kind of info on, we might all be working a little more. Derrick |

I approached the GM of our local Denny's and they weren't interested. I'll have to check out the other Denny's five miles away.

Itsmagic,
WHOM did you speak with at the Denny's? I found that with this company, the GM has as much weight as an Assistant Manager. Basically, I would find out who the RDO (Regional Director of Operations) is and try and contact that person directly.

I had no idea Dennys hired magicians. I never seen it in my area. I might give them a try.

I think its a regional thing. The Denny's in my area is mainly a place to go after the bars close. Its not a pretty place. But I am sure there are nice ones depending on their locations. As for the clientele not being able to afford your high paying private gigs. that's bologna! The more money people make the tighter they are with it. Blue collar people are the biggest tippers and they will pay your fee. A lawyer will try to talk you down a hundred bucks. I have gotten my highest paying shows in the strangest places. A young man saw me in a blue collar sports bar he said his mom throws a big fourth of July party every year. Turns out his mom is extremely wealthy. I did walk around at their 4th of July party. Got a check for $2800 + $200 cash tip. You can get just as big of shows at Denny's as you can from a country club. Don't judge a book by its cover.

For that price I did not say no. Her son said they may have a christmas party this year. My fingers are crossed. To let you know how much money they have the house they have their parties in is not the house they live in. They live a mile down the road and bought the house specifically for parties. Wouldn't that be nice. The party had about 100 people by the end of the day I think I had done every trick I ever learned. |

Is everything the same at Denny's? Do they still have a kid's night on Tuesdays? The ones who had a Denny's Restaurant previously, do you still have that same restaurant?
