I have the Johnson "Stack of Quarters" gimmick and the Roger Klause variation, entitled "Whisper."
I think the Whisper gimmick is far superior because it eliminates the quarters-to-dimes transformation and focuses on the quarter penetration. However, the Whisper gimmick is merely glued together while the Johnson stack is riveted, a much more permanent arrangement. The Whisper instructions also suggest soldering the stack if it should break, but that's a little out of my league! Does anyone know of a Quarter Stack that is designed like the Whisper Stack, but riveted like the Johnson one? SETH

You can just put a foam plug into the Johnson stack (which still allows it to move), leaving enough room for the penny to fit. When you do this, you might also install a rare earth magnet between the foam and the top coin of the stack, which will allow you to ditch the stack on another magnet, holdout, etc.

Thanks, Jerry, for the ideas, especially the magnet.
I may try to put something heavier than foam in there -- to me, the benefit of the Whisper stack is that the top five coins are solid, which gives the stack more weight and probably makes it seem more realistic. SETH

I have a Johnson stack and I put a penny in it and then slightly adjust the quarters so that the penny will be held inside the stack. I can then hold the stack from the top and lift the stack and the penny will stay inside, then when I square the coins it will drop onto the back of the spectators hand. They have never felt it. I just put the penny about half way up the stack. I hope you understand what I am trying to say, I know what I am talking about and I can barely understand what I wrote.

Yep, I got it! Actually, I had been doing the same thing in reverse, making sure the stack was squared so that the penny would move freely.
But your idea is even better, thanks for the tip! SETH
