Houdini knew very well that he and his three older brothers and one of his younger brothers were born in Hungary. He came to the U.S. at the age of four. Even a four year old remembers an ocean voyage (in steerage), Ellis Island, traveling to Appleton, Wisconsin. I have at least fifteen copies of clippings from the period 1898-1900 where Houdini identifies himself as a Hungarian (or an Austrian) and one where he claims he emigrated to the U.S. from Hungary "About ten years ago."
As Kalush and Sloman pointed out, 3 months after Houdini arrived in England, he turned in his passport which identified him as a naturalized American born in Hungary for a new passport which identified him as a native born American whose birthplace was--you know. The story about Houdini's mother telling him he was born in America is complete nonsense. No, no, no. He brought her back to Budapest in a dress made for a queen and threw a party for her at the Palm Garden, to celebrate her, surrounded by her friends and relatives--even the uncle who had refused to come to her wedding. Posted: Sep 24, 2009 12:53pm And--Houdini was six when the 1880 census was taken. The census says Houdini and Hardeen were both born in Hungary. And do you think Erich Weiss didn't celebrate when the Rabbi Weiss and all his sons (except Leopold Who was born in Appleton) became U.S. citizens? When was that? 1880 or so. |

Hello, houdinisghost, and welcome! Sounds like you have done more than a bit of research on Houdini. I am drawn to him and his story, and await more facts. You and MagiClyde should continue to share your info with us...
Also known, when doing rope magic, as "Cordini"

Regarding the Spy angle. The OSS, which the CIA grew out of, was only formed during WW2.
So, it would be interesting to know how sophisticated we were about spy and spying during that time period.

The expert on Houdini in Russia seems to be David Saltman. He's working on a historical novel about HH's brief time in that empire. Here's David's website for more info:
