Hello everyone,
I’ve been working on a magical presentation with a perception theme for some time now. I’ve mentioned this in an older post of mine (see below): (Quote from one of my older posts) “Beside my work as I magician I'm a (social) psychology master student. During my study I followed some courses on Cognitive Psychology and got really interested in perceptual processes (probably every magician is). For some time now I've been thinking about and writing a presentation that revolves around the theme of perception. Basicly it is about the fact that what our brains shows us is not a mirror of 'physical reality,' although we often assume it is. We look with our eyes, but see with our brains and this can lead to fun, interesting and sometimes magical moments. The presentation is meant to be entertaining and educational as well. I wanna show some oddities of our visual system, and combine magic, optical illusions, fun facts and popular science.” I’ve have gotten some ideas that seem workable. I’ve tested these things during strolling magic and on some friends and family, and the’ve gotten good reactions. I’m looking for some new inspirations, and that's mainly the reason for this post. I’m looking for ideas and / or effects that can be tied logically to a perception theme. So, maybe you guys could brainstorm a bit with me. Some ideas I’ve got so far: - Optical illusions, like the sheppard tables, are still seen, even with knowledge about the illusion. Even after you see the proof that two things are exactly alike (like the tables) you still see differences in shape or size. So, no matter how hard you try, or how much you want, sometimes it’s impossible to see the reality in front of you, illusions are inevitible. - Ambigious figures (like the rubins vase or necker cube) shows how our interpretation of reality can easily shift, even though nothing in the physical stimulus changes. It’s all about perspective, and how you look at things. I had the idea of doing a bill switch to a mismade bill to see show how it can be weird at first to see a new perspective (show transformation to mismade). Then I change the mismade bill to a bill of a higher denomination to show that taking other perspectives can lead to better results or personal gain / enrichment, etc. (just an idea). - I wanna incorporate some fun tests like te Stroop test, to show the automaticy of our thinking or something among these Lines. - Tell something about how memories can be misleading, because they are shaped by our current experiences and views, and how it’s important to be aware of this, because it shapes our perception as well. It thougt that demonstrating this with the gozinta boxes would be nice. - Judgements and choices can be biased by our perceptions. Demonstrate this with a prediction or some kind of mental routine. - Our perception and thus our reality’s can be manipulated through the direction of attention (Famous gorilla movie combined with Paperballs over the head or something similar). - Shrinking and growing head illusion (no real reason, seems to fit nice though). I would like to hear some more ideas and views among these lines. Hope you guys can give me some stuff to think about! Thanks! Simon |

Check out my post on the "Azevedo" experiment --
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=27 PM me with any questions. I also have numerous Sleights detailed that rely on "Inattention of Vision" and "Directed Focus" for execution. You might also get one of those "Persistance of Vision" wands ($10) for a demonstration. It paints messages in the air with changing points of light that the mind assembles into letters and words.

Interesting thoughts.
I'll chime in once I've done some study of this approach. Thanks for the ideas!

There is a routine in Pabular about fooling the sense of touch: it uses rings from the Chinese linking ring routines but with a totally different purpose.

As a counselor, I have used this approach with my individuals and groups, as well as my outside Doctor of Laughology Programs.
Closure with slides, or photos can illustrate this. A cartoon with an Einstein look alike...with caption..your brain does not always tell you the truth. Jokes and stories also get a different reaction depending on the audience and how your are percieved. You probably attended a class in your undergraduate work, where the professor had a vial of extremely smelly stuff. The lid was removed...how many folks smelled "it", some may even have gotten sick. On the wall outside my office, I have a name plate and photo I created. Only one person in the last year noticed it was not me, but Jason Alexandre.(George on Seinfield) A new line was added recently to my strait jacket routine after presenting it to a group of new Al-anons. (spouses of Alcoholics) When I shared this with a group of Al-anons, one quipped, "Do you know HOW HARD it was not to get up and help you when you were struggling". Funny to some, but would get a blank stare by most. another joke example that gets roars at workshops for drug counselors..and stares at other places... Nigel: My dad got home late new years eve Harris: That's not so unusual on that day, when did he get home.. Nigel: JUNE 3rd. Be safe, well and perceptive.... Harris still 2 old kno everthing letters above left off on poipose...er purpose
