Anyone using a "smash" effect like TETANUS in your Gospel shows?
Many thanks, carl

Not familuar with tetanus - but I do use spike - but it is for adult congregants and not children.

Just be mindful of your audience. Unfortunately with so much media influence these days, younger children are seemingly struggling with the separation between reality and imagination and you wouldn't want a youngster to "try this at home"...
As far as the effect, any element of danger trick if played well can have a significant impact on the audience and certainly is strong enough to "drive the point" home...pardon the play on words...LOL. |

I use Steve Taylors Fractured Fingers or Faith, which is a smash & stabb rat trap. Kerry Kistler had a great article about using these devices in the Christian Conjuror, Sept / Oct 2008.
Send me a pm with your e-mail and I'll shoot you a pdf of the article. |

Thanks for the routine, Tony!
Picked up TETANUS from Randi Rain this morning. It's perfect for the gospel routine I have in mind and it is 100% safe while being 100% convincing!!

I had a super lunch with my father-in-law today. He's the founding pastor and currently senior pastor of a church in Mesquite. We visited about this effect and he had some great ideas about how I might want to frame it in my show. Looking forward to a great addition to my gospel presentation thanks to Randi Rain!

Mess it up, and the incorrect styrofoam cup is chosen (e.g. "smashed") with the upturned spike underneath it, and it (the spike) ends up going through the performer's palm causing incredible pain. This has happened to several magicians already in the U.S.. I prefer Piff Paff Poof where the only potential damage/even if totally messed up is a smashed egg... More comedy, less drama (and risk)...

I think he is referring to this: go to http://www.youtube.org Type in "Smash and Stab" in the search box. That will refer you to a number of magician's submitted videos doing this trick.

Whoops, meant to type above http://www.youtube.com (not .org) You can find just about any trick on the planet demonstrated on it- just type in the name of the trick you're interested in and find it there. Before I purchase any trick off the web, I almost always "you tube" it first see it demonstrated. Unfortunately, in too many cases, the trick may often be exposed as well.

You are welcome for sure. I personally get the creeps watching smash and stab- on some versions, particularly on a poorly lighted stage (or where it may be hard to see a table top), it is not all that difficult to mess up and end up impaling oneself. Ouch!

Oh Lord! You mean it's not 100% fool proof? I can't even imagine!

If a performer does not take command of their own program and opt out of doing a danger trick if conditions are not right (like the lighting issue that MagicBus brought up) is asking to get hurt and is not treating his profession like a business.
When that happens it is natures way of thinning out the herd/ |

I recently purchased slamdown from Jimmy Fingers website. Slamdown is a 100% safe smash effect that is perfect for a family oriented or gospel show. Though it could be done "dangerously" using a knife or spike, he has a version using various "sharp" objects, that have a humorous punch at the end.
I suggest if you are interested in this type of effect you check it out. http://www.jimmyfingers.com/slamdownpage.htm
