Hey there! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to attach the reel to the silk? My friend inherited his fathers old magic, and gave some away to me, and I know how a Kirkendall reel, I'm just not quite sure how to work it as effectively without instructions
Thanks!

The only good instructions is the Paul Diamond video on Reel Magic.

Hello Van!

I wrote up the "old pro way" of attaching the reel thread to the silk in my book, "Road Scholar". I've used this method for eons. I couldn't remember whee I had learned it, so I wrote it up.

Bill told me that it was in my old friend, Paul Diamond's video on reels. (See Bill's post above.) Paul sold a great reel, BTW.. I now use a Kirkendahl for the serpentine, and a P&L for the silk thru mike. Now you have two sources of information on the "reel way" to attach reels to silks! It's ULTRA SIMPLE!

For those who have my book (it's selling well in Europe, Australia, and, the US of A!) the Serpentine Silk handling and presentation is on pages 334--336.
The silk through microphone is on page 364. I wrote my presentation, I didn't write the set up/method. It's fairly common knowledge. (see Allbenice's "Reel Magic") Fastening the reel thread to the silk for both effects, is explained on page 365.

Dears, I took note of the comments of minimum 6-9 feet for performance silk and reel.
Anyone has experience of performing in street with over 180deg crowd ?

Thanks all. Anybody here ever compare the Kirkendall reel to the El Duco reel?

There is nocomparison, one is for silks and the other is for heavy items.

It is all about the proper handling, Get the Paul Diamond instructional download Volume one for Silk though Microphone stand.

It has nothing to do with speed, but the proper handling.

The Paul Diamond video that Bill Hegbli references is excellent.

I see that Jay Scott Berry also has released a teaching video using this sort of utility device:

https://devillemagic.net/product/get-reel/

At that link are five video clips showing the effects that Jay teaches on the video, including this one:

David,
Do you trust the Deville Magic site?
It appears to be a Chinese site with little inventory.

I've purchased several items from Deville Magic, no problems. The owner, Geno Deville, is very responsive to emails . He also responds quickly to messages sent on Facebook. (but remember he is located in China, so factor in the time difference from wherever you live .)

He is from the U.K., now based in China.

The booklet "Reel Magic" by Albenice, mentioned above by Bill Hegbli and my friend the late Dick Oslund is a GOLD MINE for silk workers.

Find a copy and check out the visible 20th Century Silks Routine. It's pretty much a MASTERPIECE.

Does anyone know if the Paul Diamond video download can be purchased from a reputable (non-knockoff) site? It used to be available on L&L epub, but that site has been retired.

Thanks -

I have the complete set of VHS tapes of Paul Diamond from Videoics. This was the original producer of the video that was later bought by L&L. I will post them on the sell section if anyone is interested in them. They work fine. You just need to have a VHS machine and then a dvd burner and you could convert them all over to DVD.

I wish Murphy's would make all of the old L & L videos available for download. It seems a shame that Murphy's buys L & L , but now many of the former titles that were available from L & L are seemingly unavailable (?) . If you go to the old L & L website ( http://www.llepub.com ) it says:

"L&L Publishing's line of best-selling books, videos, and tricks is now owned by Murphy's Magic Supplies.

You can now purchase all L&L products at your local magic shop or from your favorite online magic dealer."

Some of the old L & L titles are available from Murphy's, but not the Paul Diamond lectures. It's too bad because while those were not "slick" lectures in terms of the video production values , they contain great material from Paul Diamond.
