I am looking to find out what the tape is that is used on a lot of effects. on most effects I have that have a flap or is a Z fold prop there is this black tape that holds everything together acts as a border and acts as the hinge. it doesn't look like black duct tape. this tape seems to be like a black cloth tape. does anyone know what this tape is. I have looked in my local home improvement stores for it and I don't see any on the self anywhere.

You should be able to find it in any craft store or artists supplies store as well.

Look under theatrical supplies for Gaffers Tape or ebay. It should run about $20 a roll. It is available in a variety of colors.
Library book tape also works well for hinges. Richard

Gaffers tape is made to be removed without damage to the surface. I believe you are looking for Book binders tape. It is very hard to find, but with Richard's help I found some here.
http://www.hollanders.com/supplies/ViewP......2e51eafd Abbott's Magic taped their publications for years with this type of tape. I believe it is the same tape used for such tricks as the Temple Screen. |

Get yourself booked on any television show. During production, ask one of the crew of the studio for a roll of gaffers tape. They will gladly give you some. 6 months later when the show airs, spam messages to everyone you know to watch the program. This is how I got my roll of gaffers tape 3 years ago. I still have the roll today.

For a considerably less expensive source of the black bookbinders tape:

Speaking of tape, I am looking for something good to use as tape hinge on black plastic. It should be shiny black. I have been told Tyvek tape hinges are available, but I cannot find any in black. Black duct tape is not even a consideration for this prop.
It must be strong to withstand repeated folding that happens quickly. (Boombox). Also, here is a good source for many types of tape (as well as tons of other products). I use them for corrugated boxes. http://www.uline.com/Cls_27/3M-Tapes
