The one Emerson & West packet trick I would love to find again is Pasteboard Circus.

Hi Wravyn. Not sure, but I think Pasteboard Circus was by Master Magic

Thanks Inert,
Do you remember what the trick was? The one I'm thinking of, the A, 2, 3, & 4 of clubs would turn face up one at a time but they would change color... The ace was red because it was embarrassed, the two turned blue, the green was green and the 4 was yellow. |

Sounds like an entertaining winner with lots going on to me Wravyn. Also sounds like there's some humour to it. Always a good combo.

Does anyone have an extra Emerson & West - Gems (Walt Maddison) they would be willing to sell?
If so, please send me a PM. This is one of the few (if not the only effect) I need to complete my collection. |

Hi kwarren. Checked my sources & I'm sorry to report that I tanked. Best of luck on your quest. If I'm reading your post right, that's got to be one of the most impressive E & W collections around. Well done.

Inert,
When I say I have a nearly complete collection, I really do not have anything concrete to base that on. Other than this site, I have never found any complete listing of Emerson and West effects. I have around 40 different effects. Gems is the only one mentioned in these posts that I have never seen. If anyone on the Café has a description of the effect, I sure would like to know what it is. I have searched through all my old magic catalogs, but GEMS is not mentioned in any of them. :-( I guess I will just keep watching eBay in hopes that it pops up. |

Hi again kwarren. There is a good chance that 'Gems' may have also been known as 'The Jewel Robbery'. I hope it helps & leads somewhere for you.

Now that both of the men have passed it would be nice for someone to do a book with their bios and all the collected routines they published. And/or a master set of all their products in a single pack.
It would be interesting to know how the rights to the materials were granted from the various inventors and where they have passed to now.

Totally 100% agree with you 61magic. Large project for sure. I'm thinking Richard Kaufman is the man for the job.

I also agree with you 61magic.
I learned so many card slights from all those wonderful Emerson and West packet tricks. I love getting them out, working through the routines and going down memory lane reliving my early days of learning card magic. To this day I have a special place in my heart for "good" packet tricks...especially ones with pictures that tell a story (for kids or adult audiences). Even though I have a good number of the E & W effects, I know nothing of their history. I would love to see something like this in print with a complete listing of their effects along with color pictures, original and expanded routines, etc. With Arthur and Larry pretty much being the pioneers of card packet magic, I'm really surprised no one has published any books on them. What a valuable addition this would be to any magic library! |

So, I was finally able to get my hands on this rare and wonderful Emerson & West packet trick call GEMs (by Walt Maddison)
The basic effect is this: Count to show 4 cards each with a picture of a closed jewel box. Turn the cards over and count the cards into a fan to show 4 different colored jewels. Close the fan and recount the cards into a fan again and one of the jewels is missing. Repeat to show the 2nd and 3rd jewel missing. The Red jewel is placed face up on top of the other face down cards and then turned face down on the packet as well. All 4 cards (jewel boxes) are now shown (front and back) to be empty. Turn the packet over and count-spread/count the cards into a fan one last time to show all the jewels have magically returned. I like so many of the E & W packet tricks but I believe I'll place this one in my top 10. It has a great story line and a lot of magic happens...very entertaining in my opinion. I've attach images of the packet art and the front and backs of the cards. Click here to view attached image. |

Wow, Thanks for this. Brings back so many memories. Sadly in my stupid youth, I disn' realizewhat a goldmine I had with E&W
Due to finances, had to sell most of my magic, circa 70-80's. Most were E&W packet tricks. I met Art several times, was an absolute delight to watch him pitch all these effects. He knew everyone of them perfectly, I didn't realize untill it was too late. Mr. Emerson lived right around the corner from me in Colleyville,TX. Would have been great to reminisce with Art. Congrats on GEMS. I had it at one time too.....fun trick to perform Best, David |

What an amazing thread. I met Art a few times at TAOM conventions in 1977-1980. The one trick I had that stands out is the 1-2-3-4 trick that turns into 1-8.
Does anyone know the current status / where to buy any of these? I would love to buy that one for instance and assemble the gaffs to perform it using seemingly regular cards. <edit> I see many packet tricks are sold by MagicGadget - will look around for the Four Card Trick.
