Hi everyone - I was wondering, with your experience, which is the best dye tube to purchase. I am looking at both the Camirand Dye Tube and the Rice Simplex Dye Tube. The Camirand Tube seems to hold larger silks, but is it as convenient to use, steal, etc?
Thank you for your thoughts. |

Do you have a use and Silk in mind?
It might be better to ask this in "Smooth as Silk" or "Secret Sessions". That way you can get into some of the particulars that can give the experts there enough information to help. It really depends a lot on you proposed use. -Mary Mowder |

The best way to know is to work with them. Not to sound blunt, but it will depend on what your hands are comfortable working with and exactly how you plan to use it. If a larger size silk is desirable, then you'll need to make sure you can handle the device needed. I'd suggest buying couple of them so you'll know. Fortunately, dye tubes are not very expensive.
Johnson products used to make two sizes. The smaller held 12" silks nicely, and the larger would hold 18" without a problem. I think if you used diamond cuts or smaller number momme, then you could fit larger into the equivalent size tube. I don't think these are available anymore, but are really nice if you can find one. A turned in lip makes things easier on a few different levels, but there reasons why not having one is a plus. The need for a center tape will also depend on how you plan to use it. I have not used the Camarind version, but it appears to combine the standard dye tube with Palmo. These allow for larger silks by increasing the center space without extra length. Palmos themselves are nice. Most will hold two 18" silks inside with a third on the outside. Lots of versatility with this. What you might want to do is start by finding a short section of thin-wall tube, about 1" wide by 3" long. Play with that, and that will give you an idea as to how it feels.

I love the Palmo, and Joe Porper has a fine one.

Actually the Rice Palmo is the best hand dye tube in the world. None can compare to the versatility of this and craftsmanship for only $10.00.

Make one yourself from paper, cardboard or plastic. Play with it, practice with it, try it with different size silks and you'll soon discover what size is best for you, as well as what features you require, or if you even need an expensive metal gimmick for your purpose at all. Dollar Store Magic Book Two shows how to make these from toothbrush holders and coin holders.

I have recently got the Pat Pager dye tube. It great as the centre section slides so you can have large silks in them. It has a nice weight which makes it great for ditching. It a bit different to other tubes I have used but I'm getting to like it.

I have two Palmos....one from Duane Laflin and one from Rice. Both will comfortably handle 18 inch silks. Rice's Website Listing incorrectly describes their Palmo as being made of brass....both it and the Laflin Palmos are made of aluminum. The Rice Palmo seems a tad heavier....
As stated here.......the "dye tube(s)" you will want to use depends on the trick(s) you want to do and the size silks that are required.......most Magicians I know have several different types, sizes, and varieties. The biggest dye tubes I have are the ones supplied by Abbott's for Billy McComb's Half-Dyed Hank Routine and they are built like tanks........ |

I use both the Palmo and the Porper Dye Tube. I like the Palmo for stand-up and the Porper for close-up and walk around. The shape of the Porper fits my hand very well and even with its
small compact size will handle an 18 inch silk easily. Have a great day, Walking Bob in Iowa |

I am still using the Pat Page tube and it is wonderful. I do also use a Palmo. For a simple gimmick the vartions or vast and each brings a little somthing extra to the table.

De gustibus non est disputandum! (Concerning TASTES, is not arguable.) The dye "tube" is a gimmick. (It's just an unseen device that makes a trick possible.) It comes down to, what YOU like, and, what will do the job that you want done.
I learned with a 75 cent dye tube, in 1947. Over the years, I have experimented with every type, or style, that I've "found". Each one had "something" that I liked, but, I always returned to the "standard" tube. I've been using one made by Johnson, since "forever". I just sold my last "new" one to a young guy at Abbott's Flea Market. It was my last "spare". Oh well! I'm retired. I don't NEED it. Johnson has quit making them. The kid had "good hands". Maybe, I've "started" another Billy McComb!

I have the Riser dye tube that I bought from a Pop Hadyn lecture. Holds a 25" square silk.
For as large as it is, it just works so perfectly, and I have fairly small hands. I think using the largest silks possible make the effects a bit more magical, and obviously more visible for stage and platform use. |

ThomasR:
Look back through Pop's previous posts and you will see why he had Jim Riser make the Dye Tubes that he did and why he also uses 15" Rings for his Linking Ring Routine. Yes, they are more visibile, and, in Pop's opinion, More Magical, but it also has to do with "Scale"......in other words...he gave a lot of thought to what would "work" with his Pop Haydn wardrobe....to present a balanced "scale". No disrespect here intended, but, have you performed a silk dye version with a 24" silk? I have not. The largest silks I have used for stage (other than production silks) are 18". |

Oh yes I'm very familiar with Pop's thoughts, his thoughts on the bigger silks are why I have the same thoughts on them. Ha.
Yes I use 24" silks. |
