So I don't think I'll ever get round to painting the inside so I thought I'd just post these pics now. This is my first magic build so be nice! (or laugh UNDER your breath)
I was going to make a cardboard mock up but I had an old bathroom cabinet sitting around so I thought I'd convert that before making a very nice one. The top handle is silver and was the front door handle to the cabinet and doesn't really match the handles on the side doors that I subsequently bought off fleabay. I have a nice stock of catches, hinges and knobs now so the next version will be really nice. I showed the box at the weekend and my poker buddies and brother were BLOWN AWAY with the whole effect. If you want to know my patter let me know and I can post it in the right section. My brother begged me for a week to know the secret and I've decided just to give him this version since he loved it so much. Anyway, here are some pics, if anyone can identify what wood it's made of you win a coconut* *coconut will be supplied in the form of a picture Click here to view attached image.

The inside is a bit shabby and would definitely benefit from a lick of paint....

The cabinet was originally twice as high so I had 2 sets of hinges to use which was handy...

I wasn't sure if I should use Magic Sponge balls so ended up buying some clowns noses and just glued the slit on them closed...

Because of the shape I couldn't use traditional catches to hold the side doors open. Instead I used magnets that are a couple of mm thick on the box and on the doors

Here's a side view - the small boxes you can see on the left of the picture cost only £1 each (including delivery) and worked out cheaper than buying antique effect catches from anywhere else. Also, if I can remove them carefully I might be able to use the boxes for other illusions

Here's a lower down view of the box. I had to add these little feet because the hinges stick out from the box by a few mm. Unfortunately the feet are too small and are lifted from the table surface when the side doors are opened so I will replace these before giving it to my brother.

Here's a pic of me meticulously varnishing the feed I bought from Hobbycraft. I'm not one to cut corners and applied many coats of varnish so that they blended invisibly with the rest of the box.

Way to go, Zoltan! I am all about re-purposing. Many things I have made for myself came from salvaged parts. My very first magic build when I was a kid was a sort of Flip Over Production Box that I made from a cigar box. If I had even known about this Astro Ball trick back then, I would have felt like a king if I'd made something even half this nice!

It looks very nice. So now you've proven to yourself that you can make props, make some more!

Just to set the record straight, this should properly be called an "Astro Ball Cabinet" or "Astro Ball Box." My "Astro-Box" name is already taken and has been previously published in The Wizards' Journal #22. It is based on being invented to make an "Astro-Sphere" appear and disappear, hence the name, even though it can be used for much more than that single use. I hate to get picky, but the last time I let someone slide, the Wiz Kote Box suddenly appeared and took over my OOPS Machine shoe trick.

I like it, good work! Also, since no one that I saw has guessed the wood, I know what it is. It's......TREE wood!

Thanks for the kind words everyone - I was quite chuffed with how it came out.
Sorry about the name mistake Jim - no confusion meant. I'm working on the Elevator box from a Wizards Journal just now and think I'll try a Lippincott box at the same time as it's annoying to have to wait for some paint or glue to dry so I think 2 or 3 projects at the same time will work our perfect for me. Photos in a few months! Brian - a coconut (picture) is on its way to you now
