Since 'all forums' is an option on the dropdown list for doing a search, why do I get a message 'select a forum' when I have already indicated 'select all forums'. If you are forcing me to select a forum to limit my search, how would I know which forum to select?. There are a large number of forums with names that do or don't make sense depending on one's perspective.
Is there a way that I can select all forums if I am searching for a name or term. For example what if I want to search on a magician's name, like 'David Stone'? Your assistance would be appreciated. Thank you, John Gazmen |

This has been discussed so many many times. There are topics all through the manager and tech forum. But here's the explanation once again. Yes, in order to use the search function, you must state a forum to search. In most cases, it's not that difficult to narrow the selection down. For instance, if you are interested in card magic, you'd select the workers forum. There is no point in having the search engine look at posts about coin magic. Or suppose you were interested in mentalism. You wouldn't want the search engine to look in the animal forum you'd select Penny for your thoughts, mentally speaking or if you have enough posts for the secret area, you could select inner thoughts.
Now, the reason for the restriction is that with the search all forums selecton, the search engine must look through all 4,361,882 posts whether they apply or not. Now if we have 10 members on line all trying to search though that many posts, the response time to everyone slows down almost to a stop which isn't fair to those not wishing to search. Understand also that we do not own our server. It is shared, so while we may be searching millions of posts, other users of that server are also do function which are using server time. We are working on a solution to the problem but in the meantime, the restriction is the best option we have, and no, there are no plans to remove the search all option right now. The subject has been discussed so many times, that most members should know and understand the reasoning. There are exceptions. For instance in your example, searching for subjects about David Stone would be difficult as he is involved in coins, cards, kids and a few others. Your option in that case would be to search each forum one after the other until you found what you were looking for. There are outside options which have been suggested in other posts, such as using google with site:themagiccafe. To find some of those options, use the search engine to search for "search" in the manager forum and then again in the tech forum.
