Find out about this book here:
http://mevproshop.com/ I'll be up front. I am proud to call John Wells, the author of "An Essay in Applied Sorcery" a friend. Despite this, my brief review is completely unbiased. We are both grumpy old men and if we hate or dislike something then we say so. This is an excellent treatise on expanding your readings repertoire with some very sound advice on linking to systems you may already know. AS fascinating as the whole topic is (and it IS) I find the insights into John's own mind equally intriguing. He makes me think and that's always a good thing. And an extra pointer. Mevproshop don't release any old nonsense - their stuff is unqiue in mentalism it seems to me because reviews are universally positive. Loren chooses the material he releases wisely and this is definitely no exception. |

I am half-way through my second read... I shall have more words to add hopefully by the weekend... I do love how mr. wells mind works, as well as his eloquence and general creativity...

David, thank you. Iain, thank you, especially for the cover. Courtney, if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a pm. I don't like to push my wares, but if you need more information to decide whether this would be of use to you, I'm happy to help.

Thank you.
Actually, I have no question that it's good; based on your posts and PMs on the Café I know that I like your style. For me at the present moment it's just a question of wether or not I'll get to use any new systems that I learn! I do 4 types of divination fairly regularly, but I rarely get a chance to use all the other great systems I know about. ....on the other hand, dice and dominos are very cool!

Having PM'd John Wells, who I respect already and who did not try to sell me even a little, both this book and the spirit cards books are now quite high on my conceptual "list."
It will be a while, but I definitely want them and will post a review once I get and read them. ...I'm sure they will be great.

John is one of the more under-appreciated minds in magic. Perhaps it's because he puts nothing out before its time. But when that time comes, what he puts out has matured to the point of perfection.
The work under discussion here is a perfect case in point. As soon as I can get some breathing room, I'll accord it the full review it deserves. But none should refrain from getting this prior to that. It won't improve with age: it's already at that point. Purchase, open and enjoy! |

Gary, thank you.
The merit of my ideas is open to question, though I am certainly positively biased. But let me say that Gary is quite right, if you'll forgive a self-serving agreement. The material in this manuscript has been swirling in my head and notebook for years. While some of the particular applications of "the code" are of recent vintage, the thinking about the symbolism of the Tarot and about readings in general is the result of hours of study, both in the theoretical realm of books and the furnace of praxis, the table with a paying client's eyes gleaming up at me. I don't sell secrets, not least because my secrets aren't secrets, nor are they mine. I sell, if I may put it this way, branches of wood, properly cultivated and well aged, which stick makers may shape as their fancy suits them into a staff of pleasing shape. Whether it is the staff of a wizard or a wanderer or both is up to the stickmaker. |
