Is there any footage of Bert Allerton and/or Matt Schulien extant? How about Eddie Fechter working for laymen? TIA.

Going to FFFF this weekend. I think there is some very short footage of Eddie working. Not sure about Schulien. I will ask Wilmarth.

Thanks Richard...I'm in Buffalo but I never attended FFFF. Spent many nights in the Forks though Knew all the magicians and did some magic myself...but I never felt I was good enough to ask one of the Gallos or anyone else to sponsor me, even though I used to session with them regularly on Saturday afternoons.

I would LOVE to have Magicians who have never seen the late Matt Schulien see the reactions he got from lay people in his restaurant. For me, at least, it was a catharsis.....that man KNEW HOW TO ENTERTAIN PEOPLE!

Yes, the stories about Matt telling about some of the stunts he did were incredible. I never knew Matt but he did a great job passing along the family tradition to his sons Charlie and Ed who entertained at Schulien's when I knew them back in the 70's and 80's.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out Phil Willmarth's book THE MAGIC OF MATT SCHULIEN (copyright 1959).
This was published in both a hardbound and softcover comb bound edition by Ireland's (Chicago) and has photographs as well as line drawings to illustrate some great magic. The pages are large, too. Not as satisfying as a video, but a fun read with a sprinkling of Chicago's rich magic history thrown in for good measure. Julie |

I've had the Willmarth/Schulien book since the mid-seventies. The version I have is the second printing (1976) of the first edition (1959). I never saw Matt but I did have both Charlie and Ed perform for me and my girlfriend at Schuliens when we took a trip from Ann Arbor to Chicago in 1970 or so. I used to do some of the discoveries. Time to take another look at the book; thanks all!

Magic, Inc. carries THE MAGIC OF MATT SCHULIEN book, which is currently out of stock, but their website says that they plan on printing another edition soon. I had two copies, and I gave one of my copies to my friend and mentor, Dick Oslund, when he was in the hospital a few years back. In my opinion, every close-up worker should have a copy in their library. The books is THAT good!
One of the greatest honors I have ever had as a Magician was when I was booked to open the "Magic of Schulien's" segment at the Houdini Club Convention in 2011. That segment featured Matt's grandson, Bobby Schulien and Schulien "Regulars" and Chicago Magic legends Al James and Bill Weimer. I closed my part of the segment with Johnny Thompson's Nemo 1500 Wallet trick, with $5,000 cash on the card and Johnny Thompson in the back of the room watching me. I see from the Magic, Inc. Website that they are featuring a new book from Al James coming out soon. THAT book would be worth having, too, I am sure. |

It turns up on Ebay frequently. I've always wanted to do his card under tablecloth.
