I have appeared in a charity variety show for several years now. The organization that benefits is CANPAC (Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention for Alcona County). I am in the process of putting together a full-length stage show (no big box illusions...can't afford them). I will use this show as a fundraiser for the organization and work on a 70/30 split.
This will be a one-man (no assistants) show that packs small and plays big. My hope is to be able to pack the entire show into a large rubbermaid storage tub. I intend to have a main table in the middle of the stage, and two side utility tables stage left and right. I should be able to have the entire first half of the show set, then set the second half during intermission so I never have to leave the stage. After THIS show, I hope to market the show as a fundraiser to other groups as well. I am thinking of focusing specifically on community theatre groups, since they already have the stage, light and sound, plus the personnel that know how to run them. I still need 3 to 5 additional effects to round out the show. Here is what I am working with thus far (in no particular order): Zombie Snowstorm in China Gypsy Balloon Silk Fountain (with other silk productions as a prelude) D'Lites Floating Rose Linking Rings Kandu Komedy Karton Mind Reading Orange Professor's Nightmare Miser's Dream Robert Baxt's mouthcoil routine Comedy Balloon Pump Any suggestions for other effects that would play well in a family show? I think I probably have enough stuff which requires volunteers from the audience.

What about something a bit quieter? After a lot of energetic stuff, I sit on a stool and ask "who wants to hear a story?" And go into my ring and rope routine (the story of my dog that won't stay on his leash).

Interesting, Ed. I like the idea of slowing down the pace a bit. I suppose that can be done with either adding an effect (like you have suggested) or simply re-scripting one alread in the show with a new storyline.
I end the show with a SNowstorm in China routine. I use Kiki Tay's storyline because it is very moving to me. Kiki has given me his permission to use it...although I do change it up a bit, and tell the story about HIM instead of about me.

What is the age group you are working for? Family, 3-7 or 7-11? Will you be using volunteers? You can use a sucker dice trick, popcorn box, ect. Lie Detector, a Balloon routine, I always break my show into 3 acts the opening act which is about 12 minutes focus on audience reaction, very fast pace between act 1 and 2 change pace a bit and change focus, hit them here with a joke or two Act 2 focus on audience 3 effects, using volunteers with audience participation, a more relaxed steady pace about 18 minutes, if you use a puppet, here is the opportune time between act 2 and 3 A joke or 2 that goes over the kids heads and hits the adults. Slow at the beginning and then speed up to climax and closing. Now remember I am strictly a children entertainer so if any of this doesn't fit I am sorry, but good luck. Another Idea is to look at Barry Mitchell effects and stories. Such as the WOW box, Can Opener or any of his others.

I'll gladly send you my ropes through girl routine which gets a lot of the laughs that you get with an arm chopper or head chopper but without the scary prop.
And, it's inexpensive. Regards, Jef

I too like to slow it down a bit and the Linking Rings with a child on a stool. Instant Magician to music. Professor's Nightmare..a classic and still a crowd pleaser.

Jef:
Thanks for the offer...but I have been using your routine for a year now. I LOVE it...just used it last week in a charity show. I had the girl a bit nervous...but the audience was laughing. Went off well, as it ALWAYS does! Thanks for your giving attitude!

There's always newspaper tear which fits the bill for packing flat. I got a lot out of Vanishing Bandana but last couple years have substituted Robert Baxts Red Bull routine for it and really enjoy performing this effect. Jumbo B'Wave is another good one if your show isn't for kids that are too young to be familiar with cards.

By the way... How has the new show been going? I fell into the trap of not noticing the original date of your post (but there was a red colored coffee mug)!
