Ok, I'm new here, so please forgive any miscues....my high school woodshop knows I am a hobbyist and wants to build some props for me. I would purchase the plans, probably from Osborne illusions....I need advice as to what to start with. Looking for something fairly simple, but I don't really know what is simple. I was thinking of an arrow head box, or sword box, something along those lines. Any advice?
Thanks. |

Look at the effects the plans merchant offers and decide what you want to PERFORM.
Many illusions share a comparable level of 'complexity' to build.

Just my opinion, but having a good table, maybe one that the tops comes off and the base collapses for easy transport would be a great item to have, or did you want only illusions?

A 3 fold table, like a G&M style or a nice folding Suitcase Table also gets my vote.
A. You will get years if use from it. B. Nothing is exposed to your classmates. YOU are the magician, not them. C. There are a lot of construction techniques involved in making a suitcase table including careful measuring and attention to jointery. This construction of a nice table will give you valueable experience for other projects later on.

Exposure was my concern, too. If you have a number of classmates working on your illusion, you can almost bet that ONE of them will not be able to keep their mouth shut. I would lean toward a suitcase table or some other type item.

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't really thinking of the exposure aspect, and I should have been. Someone would talk, and I don't want to expose effects. I'll either do it myself, or wait until I can purchase.
Thanks. |

Orrr...
You could have them make PART (but not ALL) of the sections, making the "tricky" parts and doing the final assembly yourself.

Houdini used to have props built that way.

That could be fun too, you could get the reputation of being mysterious!

Nobody mentioned Mark Wilson's books? C'mon, reall?
By the way, I just met a machinist today at the blacksmith shop where I work -- his college shop teacher was a machinist on The Manhattan Project. Apparently that job was parted out as well, with different machine shops working independently of each other and unaware of the others' existence. Good luck coordinating that one among high school kids. ;0) |
