I'm not exactly new, but at a point where I'm ready to work on the Faro Shuffle and the Zarrow Shuffle.
What are the best sources for this? I'm a big book guy but it seems like DVD or video might also be helpful in this instance. |

Herb Zarrow has a really good DVD on explaining his methods, quite well as well.
DO NOT I repeat DO NOT reference Youtube for a Zarrow. People do them there COMPLETELY wrong, I've never seen someone on youtube do one right, and I've watched a LOT of youtube videos on magic. There's no better place to learn the Zarrow than the creator himself, Herb Zarrow. If you really want to master the Zarrow, he can show you how. The Faro is just as basic as a riffle shuffle-- Learning it from YouTube wont kill you. It might take time, I'm not sure.. I know I had to sit there for a few hours before I could do a Faro. Once you do your first 3 or 4 Faro shuffles, you will begin doing Perfect Faro's pretty quickly.. The more you practice, the more accurate you'll be for a perfect Faro every time. Start with a slightly broken deck, not quite out of the box. Watch some videos of people Faroing and just go for it. Some tips I found useful for Faros: Do a card spring, and don't straighten the cards. The slight crimp in the deck can really help sometimes. Injog the top packet about a quarter of an inch closer to you than the top packet, sometimes having them at different levels like that, it can make it easier. Experiment with the right and left side leans.. Sometimes angling the pack to the right or left may be easier for some than others. When you do a Faro, it's important to make sure your fingers for the top packet remain on the top half of the cards, and for the bottom packet, they must remain on the bottom pack of the cards. If your fingers press on the cards too closely to the point where the Faro meetings to shuffle, you'll have a much more difficult time interweaving them. Good luck. Happy Zarrow and Faro'ing! |

Gary Plants booklet on the Zarrow shuffle may also be helpful...and also Wesley James description on the Zarrow in his book *Enchantments*
But both - as far as I know - not so easy to find these days... But - as Zephury already told you - the DVD by Herb Zarrow is definitely a Go!

I think Harry Lorayne's brief discussion of the Faro in close-up card magic (now reprinted in Classic Collection #1) s still the best. Card college has an excellent description of both the Faro and the Zarrow. I think both are easier to learn from books than videos, but maybe that's just me.

I started back in may 2013 to learn the Faro starting with Harry Lorayne's description in CUCM.
Then around Thanksgiving I bought a used CD "Michael Close On The Faro Shuffle" both of these helped me learn how to faro. Still something just didn't click until I bought an old copy of Ed Marlo's "Faro Controlled Miracle's" around Christmas time. Now I can do a decent Faro, but I get about 4/10 perfect Faro's. Lots of work for me still. I religiously do 30 Faro shuffles a day, and right now I'm starting to learn the table faro. Thanks Mr Lorayne, Mr Close, and Mr Marlo. I have Herb Zarrow's vid, just haven't started working the Zarrow as of yet. |

Thanks for the responses, everybody. I've been messing with the Faro for a while but still can't nail it consistently. Zephury, the tips you shared here should help tremendously. I'll check out Harry's as well, as I always enjoy his work.
The Zarrow is really new to me, and makes sense to learn it from its namesake so I'll be doing that too! Thanks again. |

The source that got me able to do faros with a high degree of success is Fred Robinson's description in the first issue of Pabular. Pabular is available in digital format for under $50 for more than 1300 pages of magic. Lots of great effects but the Barrie Richardson routines are standouts for me. At any rate, Pabular is a great bargain.

For all standard sleights Card College is my go to resource. In this case it has great descriptions both for the Faro as well as the Zarrow.

For Zarrow you can go directly to Gary Plant's site and get either the notes, DVD, or both.

Though I'm biased because I know him, the best Zarrow instruction is by Steve Reynolds. Not only is Steve's Zarrow the most deceptive one I've ever seen ( from all angles) but he's really figured out how to teach it.

I'm hoping to learn some tips on the Zarrow from Steve Reynolds on Saturday, March 28th in Fort Walton Beach. He's coming to lecture there. I can't wait.

I stumbled across this and it's been a huge help. I still have a few packets of 2 cards that go across. Any advice on fixing that?
