Forgive me if this is the wrong section to ask this question, but it seemed most appropriate.
I recently obtained (thanks to another member here) David Regal's Approaching Magic and I really, really like "The World's Greatest Invention." Since the book came out, David has released it as "Vortex of Refreshment," which retails for around $40. I'm pretty sure that I can assemble the various whatsits for the trick for a lot less than that, but I've never really built anything like this, and I don't know if it's sufficiently difficult that just dropping 40 bucks will be worth it, or if the props in the marketed version are of sufficiently high quality that my homemade version will look terrible/flimsy in comparison. Any thoughts? Thanks, Dan |

As someone who makes and sells simple props, I can tell you that any project is more time consuming and expensive than you think it will be. It you love craft work, and would enjoy the challenge of making it yourself, go for it, but if the primary goal is to save money, I suspect you'll be better off buying the prop and saving your time.

I have the Vortex of Refreshment. It would be very simple to construct one but getting it just right might take a few goes and require the purchase of new parts for each build (to get the strength right).
Whether this is something you want to try is probably subjective to your own enjoyment of experimentation verses just wanting one that works I guess. It took me a while just to find a glass (albeit a plastic one) that worked well for me with the purchased kit. Also finding a mat that works as well as the supplied one might be a challenge. |
