A lot of progressed made today. It is snug for me though. I wish I had made it a little bigger. This will give me incentive to lose about 10-15 pounds. Worst case scenero is I might have to use my assistant instead of me. My biggest gripe is with my mirrors. I bought acrylic mirrors so that I would not have to worry about glass breaking. They cost me $180 for the two of them plus shipping, and I'm not sure if it is a characteristic of acrylic, but they are slightly warpped. They are 1/4 inch, plus I backed them with 1/4 inch plywood, which helped but they still are slightly warpped. I did paint the left inside of the illusion and I think it is OK. I'll have more of an idea when I paint the right inside.
If all goes well tomorrow, I should have the head twister on the top tomorrow. The front door is also on now. I love the way it is looking. With each thing I do it looks better all the time. |

From the illusions I have, and their age, and the amount of shipping they have gone through, glass mirrors glued to plywood should last and would be the best.

I'm guessing probably a lot cheaper too.

There are ways to alter, twist and straighten acrylic and secure it even if it has a Mylar coating attached before you bend it.
Just put more polyester adhesive (LN) in the areas that need raised and weigh the other areas down, onto a sub straight (quality 9mm 7 layer plywood. "Inspect what you expect" make adjustments by injecting more adhesive, as needed, and hold straight edges and flat sheets at various degrees to correct the reflections. Most of this acrylic material is NOT cast but extruded and that means it will have a grain and tendency to bend easier the 96 way then the 48 way and this should be taken into consideration. I prefer glass. I hunt around the trash bins for good mirrors then cut them down to size. Yes they weigh twice as much (very general comparison) but the reflection material MIGHT be applied to the face of the glass which will not produce a reflection equal to the thickness of the material itself. There are good points to cutting acrylic over glass but once you get the hang and use the correct tools (and measure correctly) then glass is superior IMO. But enough dilly dallying (showing my age there). Let's see some pictures, pictures and more pictures, pronto... Please, sir.

80-85% completed. Lower box still needs to be finished off in the inside. The Head Twister at the top needs to be repainted. Upper Box needs to have to have back and 1 side painted. Winch on top needs to be connected so that it will raise the top with a spooky clicking sound, and the inside middle section needs that special something.

I see you chose a single door, what was your thought behind one door. It will make the open a little awkward in movement of the performer, won't it. I believe it may also give a glimpse to the method, as all boxes I have seen in magic with this method always use double doors. Of course, I am no expert, just noticed your departure from the established way of designing.
