Does anyone know how to adapt a Steno stand to where you can add a table top, brief case? I purchased one of these stands and they are very stable. In my opinion there as stable as a Eureka table base. The only way I can think to adapt the Steno stand is to cut the existing flange off and use the hardware like on a Eureka table base. I wanted to see if there were any other way to add a table top to the stand before I cut the flange off. Any help would be great. Thanks

It depends on which steno you have? if you can post a link to a photo of the attachment area I might be able to point the way.

The steno tripe that I bought, did not have a FLANGE. It had the male half of a bit of hardware, that "slid" into a socket on the bottom of the actual machine.
I removed that hardware, and inserted a 1/4" short pipe nipple into the tripe's tuhing. It was a snug, but not tight fitting, so I drilled a hole through the tripe's tubing and inserted a bolt thru the tripe tube, the nipple and the tripe tube. A bolt with lock washer and mut finished locking the nipple very snug. Oh! I wrapped one layer of duct tape around the nipple before inserting it. I use it with one of several cases that have a floor flange centered in their bottoms. Karrell Fox had a case from 8 track tapes with a flange centered on the bottom. He could carry all the props for the act, plus the steno tripod inside. His 30 minute club act, used an I-Deck, a piece of rope, scissors, a breakaway wand, a serpentine silk, and a Walsh Vanishing Cane. He opened with a comedy monolog, and then did the the four tricks. Floor flanges are available in most hardware stores.

The Steno stand is a standard Steno stand that is used with a Steno machine that uses the male and female connection. The top of the flange has a piece of flat metal.
Thanks for the help Dick |

Being we don't know the size of the flat metal piece or you can proved a picture, I can only suggest a good option. Measure the diameter of the pipe leg. Go to a hardware store and go to the brass fittings section. Look for a compression nut, with threads on the other end. Next find a threaded piece, that fits the fitting, but has an increased thread on the other end. So the threaded brass will go from say half inch on one end to one inch on the other. Now find a pipe or closet flange the will fit the brass threads. If your lucky and can find a compression nut with threads that fit a flange, skip the increased threaded connector/resizer part.
Cut off the flat metal using a pipe cutter by hand, go slow and make sure it is straight across or level. The can be purchased at Harbor Freight for next to nothing. Assemble the brass parts on the pipe. Attach the flange to the case. Done. If you can find a thick piece of metal, it is best to tap a thread in the center, making your own flange. It takes up less room and be on the inside of the case then. |
