Hey everyone,
For those of you who don't know, I recently put out an ebook, and it's been getting some pretty good reviews. I thinking about putting the material out in a more mainstream format, i.e. either DVD or manuscript. Which do you think would be the best format to go with? Thanks! BTW, here's the link where you can read the descriptions of the effects... http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......0&24 Zach

I think that these days, more people like videos. Just make sure that you are very descripteve.
There is also a higher profit in videos in think. With a DVD burner and digital videocamera, you can do it yourself for just about $3 a DVD. Another question is: Do I have enough for a book? People can easily see how long a book is but can't really see how long a DVD is. Personnally, I would rather get a DVD than a Book. |

I would go for a DVD as well. They are more enjoyable you can have many features included. You can actually see the effects being performed.

Hey gang, just to let you know, I got a dvd coming out this summer that I think you all might enjoy. The effects are really strong and very easy to do. The dvd is called "Hit and Run." It will be filled with body stunts, sight gags and of course, magic. Just imagine bringing out a 2 decks (red & blue), having one spec. shuffle the blue deck behind his/her back (so as not to be easily pursuaded), and placing one card from anywhere in the deck face boxed & tabled. Next, have spec. #2 pick a random card (no force) from the red deck, place it face down, open the blue deck, and spread it to see only one face up card. Turn the red backed card face up and they match! That's only one of the effects on the dvd. I also have things for stage as well. Everything has been tested in front of everyday people; it plays awesome. So I'm just giving you a heads up. Thank you for takin the time to read this, and I'll let you know when it's ready. scott swan

I'd definitely go for a DVD; harder to copy and as has been said before, everyone is into them. I feel myself as well they are more professional.

Whether to make a DVD or a book depends on a lot more.
1) Do you want to publish yourself? I can't present on a DVD to safe my live, so if I want to make a DVD I need to hire someone else to do all the presenting work. 2) Copying a DVD is simply ripping and converting. With a sizeable book, you'd need to scan every single page and convert it to PDF. While both might take the same amount of time, the latter certainly would take a lot more work and cause sore thumbs. If you take a look at illegal filesharing services, you can see a lot of the material on there is actually video, because books are harder to copy (and easier to recognize and remove if discovered) 3) Do the effects involve a lot of intricate moves and timing? Some things are just better taught in a visible video medium than in writing and vice versa. 4) Watch Andrew Mayne's videos on Selling Magic. See what method leaves you with the most costs and the best profit margin. |

A book is a wonderful object. A DVD is... A sharp thin frisbee. As for being able to actually see the stuff performed, Its almost always a let down. Remember, the book is always better than the movie. I'll read an effect in a book and my imagination runs wild about how great it is and that I should master it. Then I'll see it on tape and think "meh, I guess its not that great after all". Rodney |

I prefer books. Simply because I can still read those tricks in a couple of decades. It's already hard enough to watch VHS videos. Who knows what will happen to DVDs in a couple of years. Stick to the stuff that has been unchanged for the past 2000 years.

Books have always been great and you can take them with you now with ebook readers but you can not beat a DVD for learning.

Why do one or the other? If you figure out that both options are viable, you can do both. Personally, I would choose for a book because DVDs might be replaced by something else in the future. I have a massive collection of videos but I hardly watch them anymore and when my VHS player breaks down, I can't buy a replacement. Books are durable and can easily be replaced without being dependent on other technology.
What has been said before is important too. Some tricks just don't let themselves be described in writing. For those DVDs are better. |
