In magic, when the performer steals a watch and then hands it back, it is a kind of "showoff" thing--See how clever I am! You didn't even notice!
I think that it is much better to have the watch appear magically, as a surprise to the performer, which still reveals skill, but sidesteps the slap to the face--"You didn't even notice!" It lets the spectator off the hook, and the magician still gets the credit for the skill: |
