Does anyone know someone that could make this for me?
James Riser's Sacagawea Shiner is great, but he won't make one for me in a quarter form and I need it to be in a quarter. Thanks, Alex |

Todd Lassen used to make some coin shiners.
You might want to email Todd for more info: http://www.toddlassen.com/misc.htm |

I did make a whopping 26 quarter shiners using clad core quarters. Then the abrasive company changed something in the make up of the abrasive and they can no longer be made. The glim area was still silver but only a few mills thick and without the copper core showing through. Those where unbelievable difficult to make. But the good news is I made 26 of them but getting one of them away from the guys and gals who own them could be a difficult task. I do not even have one in the archive.
Even made a 2 dimes, before the abrasive change. Making a clad dime shiner was so difficult its not even funny. I just wanted to see if I could do it, afterwards I decided I rater shoot myself in the foot than make another. As its really is that hard to do. Thanks Artie, glad you like the nickel. BTW the nickels are shown by John Riggs on his Essential Slights for Mentalist DVD. Now the problem with making a convex shiner the size of a quarter is finding the convex mirror of that size. I know I looked for years but have found zero that are a workable size without trimming down a larger mirror which will cause problems with the view. So if anyone solves this issue with the quarter size and convex mirror hi me up I like to have one in my collection as well. A quarter shiner or glim could be made like the nickel in 90% silver however there will be an issue with maintain the finish as it will require advance silver polishing techniques to maintain the surface after the silver begins to tone which it will and is one of the reason I chose the nickel other than tradition. Just a few thoughts since I have years of experience with making the various types of glims and have many rare types from the past in the vaulted collection. I do not know the correct answer to the quarter problem and attempted to solve it myself on more than one occasion so all I can say Alex is I understand and feel your pain. But should you find a solution please message me as I been trying to find an alternative solution to the quarter problem for many years now. In case one of you are wondering what the issue is its a matter of size when in the hand for me quarters are a really good size however the nickel does work well and gets me through but I really like to have one of the 26 quarters I made back in the collection, but I know that most likely not going to happen as the times I tried the response was from my cold dead hand...... Cheers Bill Montana |

I might be missing the point........ but a real simple solution from Joannes is a bag of quarter size mirrors for three bucks, stick one in a quarter shell????
http://www.joann.com/darice-beveled-edge......start=13 or glue this to the back of the quarter http://www.amazon.com/Tim-Holtz-Idea-olo......ror+film |

I think you missed the word "convex".

Jim Riser's 7/8 inch shiner might fit well in a quarter shell.
A quarter is .955 inches in diameter. 7/8 inch = .875 If the rim of the shell accounts for .080 of the total diameter, you would have a perfect fit. |

Can anyone suggest where I could find a 7/8"to 1" convex shiner today?
The Jim Riser shiner mentioned above is not currently in production. Thanks |
