I recently got my first "big" illusion, a Wiz Kote from Chalet magic. This thing is fantastic!
However, the smoke switch in the rear, is it possible to rig that to a remote. That way the "effect" can begin to happen while I'm offstage or away from the box? Ideas? AC |

I've used the Wiz Kote for years. Simply push the "smoke switch" when you push the button for the lights and sound. You've got a good ten seconds to walk away.

Of course, you can many anything for a remote control, as long as you have the knowledge and space in the box to do so. They sell generic remote controls on eBay from China for only a few dollars.
An expert posted a method to make a remote box that opened on it own, here on the Café a few years ago. You might want to look up that post, to get you started. On the other side, I really don't see what a remote would do for the effect. As a magician, it should be the magician's powers that create the magic, that means, using his personality and stage showmanship should be more important then needing a remote from off stage or sitting in the audience. If you the magician has a good reason for it, then that is totally different. It all depends on the routine. Finally, if you do add a remote, you will lesson the value of the illusion if you decide to ever sell it. Just some things to think about. |

I've had some success with cheap remotes off ebay like this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12v-10A-relay......23105063 But I can't vouch for how long they will last or how reliable they are. I've wired one up to an effect I'm developing and it's lasted over a month of moderate testing but the receiver does chew through the battery very fast. They are fairly simple to work out how to wire, there's instructions in one of the photos. |
