Numberphile posted a video about the standard magic square method today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQxCnmhqZko
They also posted some extra footage, discussing ways to improve it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhB2AUNcsx0 I bet they have little or no idea how much effort that magicians have put into improvements in magic square methods. |

This 'standard' method, otherwise known as the 'instant magic square' has been around for at least 85 years (including the refinement that spreads the values). A couple of weeks ago, I posted a summary of the history of that method on the 'Everything Old in New Again' forum.(4 rows up). I asked if anyone knew who actually created the method. There haven't been any responses yet, so if you have any interest or can answer the question, check out the post over there.
