BREAKING KAYFABE
No cards routines; In COGNOMEN, Max divines the name of a celebrity thought-of by a spectator. We cannot stress how wonderful and practical this routine is. It requires the simplest of props. There is no pre-show. It can be played to the largest audience. And has all the drama and interaction that makes it an enthralling piece. A fabulously practical routine described in full detail. { Billet routine} SPY STORY, in which a spectator joins you in an adventure in espionage as a location, time, an amount of money and a shape are chosen. All four have been predicted in the mission instructions given to your spy. You'll love the finesse that Max brings to this item. { Confabulation routine } ABOUT FACE is an applause-pulling psychometry routine in which you correctly guess which spectators made which drawings. A direct method, entertaining premise and smart staging have made it a strong item in Max's repertoire for many years. { Sneak thief routine without drawing revelation} Regards |

'Kayfabe' means secret, and the latest DVD album from the Essential Magic Collection contains many. Some of these secrets have been kept by Max Maven for forty years. They are incredibly powerful professional routines with entertaining narratives, slick staging and a devious approach to method.

The second and third DVDs are mostly mentalism with playing cards, the first and fourth are not. The interviews with Max were much less teaching and more biographical than I expected--like Max's childhood, how Phil became Max, his influences and friends. The fourth DVD features in part a marvelous lecture and the addition of the "Fabulous Monster" Canadian television program on him done some years ago.

I love Max’s deck stab but I often stab one away, does anyone have any tips?

I belong to a few magic auction sites and have yet to see this DVD set listed for resale, so it appears that those who bought it liked it.
I'm a fan. Not every routine will work for you as it doesn't fit your character. The last think I suspect Max wants are more people shaving their heads and aping him. It's all about finding the nuggets that speak to you. Loved Max's Nothing, but I only use 2 routines... well, 1 and a preamble really. The nugget I found was in a single statement where he mentioned 'working without a safety net' or something to those words. That really got me thinking... The price doesn't scare me off, but I'm hesitant about buying any DVD's these days as I went digital a few years back. Maybe someday Apple will start up a site called IMagic where everything is digital but secured from piracy.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.

I just finished the first dvd. Max Maven and Eugene Burger are my two favorite performers. I never get tired of watching and learning from them. I miss that we will not get to glean more information from Eugene, as he is now gone. I will take every opportunity afforded to me to listen and learn from Max, a true legend in our field.

I don't think I have ever posted on here before, but having just watched these videos I really feel I must say something.
For a working performer this DVD set is a gold mine. I can't rate it highly enough. If you only do mentalism for a hobby or to fool your friends - then maybe it is not for you. The first DVD has three routines that are so clean, strong and entertaining that I have made an entire 20 minute act out of them. Cognomen, About Face and Spy Story are simply brilliant. I showed the DVD to a friend of mine who is a pro hypnotist, and now he is opening his act with Cognomen. have been asked to get another 20 minute show together (to add to the 45 minute act I already do) for a cruise line. Fortunately this this video came to the rescue. I personally never use cards in mentalism, and it is true there is a lot of card work on the set, but the non-card work on the first DVD was more than enough to float my boat... quite literally. The three effects I mention are pretty much prop free, simple to execute, contains an entertaining premise and and pack a strong punch. This means I can now do a 45 minute set AND a 20 minute set on the ships and earn some pretty good money. These are professional routines, and to someone who earns their living from performing - just one of those routines, and the accompanying insights, are worth the purchase price alone. So for the investment of just over £100 - I have got an extra 20 minutes. That has now put me in the position where I can earn up to £2000 a week I can't think of a higher accolade! Thank you very much Mr Maven! You are a true star and a gent |
