Must have books for me are:
1. The Expert at the Card Table - SWE Erdnase - I go back to the False Dealing sections all the time, it's some of my favorite to work on, even though most magicians hate the grip, I really enjoy playing around with it. The blind riffles and cuts are solid too. 2. Complete Walton 1 - This is Roys finest work and some of the most commercial card magic you will ever find is in here. 3. Revolutionary Card Technique - Marlos study of technique was unrivaled and this is an excellent view into his world and how to really dissect sleight of hand card magic. |

Let me repeat - for any novice trying to "get into" impromptu close-up card/coin, and etc. magic - I can't think of a better book for them than THE MAGIC BOOK - 'cause I wrote it JUST FOR THEM.
If what you say ("Not everyone has read or even knows of your books") is true - that's THE MAIN reason for me mentioning it - because they certainly SHOULD READ OR KNOW OF MY BOOKS. Just trying to help.

Just got Ben Earle's new book. Haven' opened it yet. I am guessing it will go on this list. Here is a routine that uses a Ben Earle move that nobody uses. Can you guess what it is?

So; I've been in magic for 80 years - written many books on magic (all best sellers incidentally), lectured to magician groups/clubs all over the world, published a magic magazine (APOCALYPSE) for twenty years ... so the assumption is that I know a little bit, just a trifle, of what I'm talking about and that I've really earned the right to state my opinions.
Pay a bit of attention to posts like above ("THAT [The Magic Book] is a book I go back to from time to time. It really is a classic and serves as a refresher in basic technique for those who have been in magic for a while. It was the book Doc Eason started with.")

Harry is correct. Get all of his stuff. I read Close Up card Magic in high school 30+ years ago. Great.

Three very important books for me:
- The Expert at the Card Table, by SWE and every variations on this (Vernon, Darwin Ortiz, Marlo, David Ben...). - The Magic of Ascanio, by Arturo de Ascanio, a must have for understanding the Spanish Cardmagic Conception. - Mnemónica, by Juan Tamariz, for multiple reasons (technique, psycology...). Do not forget Steve Forte, Pit Hartling, Simon Aronson, Harry Lorayne, David Roth, Vernon, Marlo, Houdin...

I've always thought that Walter Gibson's "Complete Illustrated Book of Card Magic" was underrated and undervalued. Amazon frequently has good used prices on it (and some of the others recommended here such as "The Magic Book").

I could lend it from the public library here in Sweden and it has great material in it. I think that every magician in my age in Sweden and over has owned and/or read it. I actually was in the library the other day and it´s still there. I had to sit down for 30 min just to read the exellent cardstuff in it. All new students of magic should read it!! Sincerely Jerry |
