Man, that's something. On the one hand, I don't like the idea of offending people's faith. On the other hand, it indicates that you came across as believable. There is no way to control how people will react to something, people's reactions are their own. I guess I'd take it as a positive in the big picture. A strong reaction, even negative name calling is better than "oh, that's cute.... can you make balloon animals too?"

If you want to become a good cold reader, learn a proper system (Tarot, Palm Reading, etc)
Take at least two years to properly learn the system. Then and only then, you can dispose of it and you will be able to give readings left and right. The problem is, most magicians want everything fast and won't take the time to actually learn. |

My bottom line with CR at this point is...remove most of the usual filters, and say what you think.
Within reason lol. I find a statement made with eye contact, and sincerity, even if wrong..is ok. There's a load of info out there to study, but like hypnosis, you just have to do it with confidence out of the gate. Sometimes when I'm "stuck" I'll imagine I just gave the person a three card reading. I'll imagine what three cards they drew, and start there. An odd out I know...but it (at minimum) gives you a starting point, something. 252MoreHalfThoughtsLater

I really like that. The late John Wells used a similar process. He once described for me a method of generating a mental number and reducing it ala numerology to a single digit and using that to mentally select a tarot card. Sounds more complicated than it is.
I use the Ken system for generating a personality reading when it seems the right thing to do. Patrick |

Very nice
You made me think of something I just came across, Eclipse by Sudo Nimn. Great if you actually know numerology. I'm kinda giddy with this lately, it's a strong one.

Hey Patrick, "5" by Scott Creasey.
Check it out, I think you'll appreciate it. Back of your business card, numerology/tarot reading, with a mentalism kicker. Curious to hear your thoughts on it It plays strong, and would be a nice intro into CR, since you have the prediction to save you regardless.

252, that's one of several things I would like to get. His Tarot in Your Pocket also looks worth a read. However, I have finite cash at the moment and some recent unexpected expenses, so a lot of fun stuff has to wait for another (richer) time.
There are several products out there that are meant to help amateur mentalists get into cold reading. Some are just a joke. Some are pretty good. But I agree with the advice that learning a legit (as in established, with a body of writing and acceptance to go with it) is more useful than trying to learn a lot of stock lines for every situation. There are some very very clever ideas for expanding on a knowledge of an established oracle to give propless readings, but knowing the oracle is necessary to the process. I use the Ken System by Ron Martin for propless name readings. I don't have Luke Jermay's Tarot Alphabet, but if it does what I think it does, it is a tarot-based version of essentially the same thing. John Wells' numerology idea is another way to do a similar thing. The knowledge of a system is used to generate a message that isn't simply taken from a memorized list of "fits most people" statements. I have played around with different reading mementos, tic sheets, and so on, but don't find most of them very useful. The only exceptions are when the piece of paper is vital to the process, such as one I put together a while back that is based on Grossberg's Vitruvian Square. Excellent update and expansion to tic tac toe numerology. In general, I like the idea of business card tic sheets, but the reality of them less so. I've seen several tick sheets that claim to be amazing, but really distract from the contact with the client. Others are ludicrous in that they look like exactly what they are - cheat sheets for someone who doesn't know what to say without it. I'm playing around with a business card size tic sheet for a 2 minute reading. I have a feeling it will be as useful as most others, which is to say not at all useful as anything other than a thinking exercise on my part. My (limited, admittedly) experience is that if a client wants a reading, the client asks for a reading. (I should note that when I do readings, I make it clear that's what I am there for.) If I did a good job answering questions, there's no trouble with the client remembering me. If I did a mediocre job, holding onto a business card with my name on it doesn't really happen. And shouldn't. -Patrick |

Patrick, The Ken System just sparked my interest, never heard of it.
Now it's on the list But, speaking of Tarot in your Pocket..it's really good. I've been doing card readings since very young. A simple system was taught to me with playing cards. I could never seem to learn tarot cards though. Mental block, intimidation, etc. But, learnig the process of Tarot in your Pocket, got me up to speed in days. Now that I have a foundational knowledge of the Major Arcana, I'm finding its fun and easy to expand on. I forget what these pamphlets are going for, but if you're a bit broke atm, you may get "more" out of TIYP. It got me digging back into my Richard Webster reading books. ("The Tarot for fun and Profit", "How to build a Psychic Practice", "Readings as Entertainment" and....the one that's convinced me I'll go south when I die..."Cashing in on Past Lives" lol) Lately I've been lucking out with finding these little releases. (Excluding the Webster books just listed. They're niether little or "cheap") Gems abound in the works of Sudo Nimn, Doug Dyment, Paul Brook, and EE, as well. (Sorry. I tend to plug this group lately. My way of giving back lol.) Kind of ironic, it's been much more common for me to find gold in the quiet releases. I used to be such a sucker for the hyped stuff. Still fall for it occasionally. But works from Creasey, and the bunch mentioned above, kind of balance it all out. So...guy named Ron, created a system called KEN you say huh? Curiositys killing me lol 252ResearchKEN

In essence, John said to let your mind come up with three numbers and reduce to a single digit. Pretty standard numerology. Then, the tarot cards whose number (trumps only) become the mental reading.
Example: you walk in and I think of 23, 9, and 406. 2+3+9+4+0+6 is 24. 2+4 is 6. Card 6 is The Pope, now often called The Heirophant. But since card 15, the Devil, also reduces to 6, that card gets interpreted in the mini reading. In the example given, if you walked up to my table and I generated that random reading, I would tell you that I sense an issue having to do with chain of command or who is in charge. There may be a teaching aspect, that's not really clear. However, a conflict exists between what you are expected to do and what you really desire. There are temptations holding you back from resolving this issue. Not difficult, even if it looks involved. Patrick |

Just to keep things together the idea of taking three random numbers for a reading is explored in Sydney Omar's Thought Dial. Jerome Finley has some work on this also by the same name.

And, now that you mention it, I recall John mentioned Omar. Very little of what we do is truly new. Shoulders of giants and all that.
I never used the system as described, but I do remember it from the conversation. I don't recall whether John placed more weight on a higher card if that was the first reduced number (like if my example had generated 21 first, The World would come ahead of The Empress and The Hanged Man). It is possible to load these things up with so many rules and procedures that they cease to be useful tools. Patrick |

You can't beat the "sexy" of the tarot easily though lol.
To give the best reading I'm (honestly )capable of, I fall back on the first system I learned. I don't know if it would even qualify as a system, it's so bare bones. Simplistic generalizations and rules around a regular deck of playing cards. But, that was a great intro into CR for me. When you aren't given much to work with, it kind of forces your hand. "Happy accident" and all that

I've used Completely Cold by Kenton Knepper for years even when I put down my swammi for the past 3 years. I'm supersized it isn't suggested more often?
A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a foolish man can learn from a wise answer.
Attributing negativity to a topic or post doesn't make the topic or post negative, it shines a light on the negativity of the person or persons, making the attributions. BEWARE these Debbie downers and anything they say. They simply lack the self esteem or good will, to be positive or productive. Your belief in self, is more important and is all that matters, for your success to be glorious. |
