What I am touchy about is you masking so many statements of absolute fact that are simply your own experience and hardly the norm.
Your experience is valuable, but hardly universal. And I have never done restaurant magic in resorts ever. Only in the real world as you want to call it. So I have no idea what you are talking about. I make choices about where I work. I choose restaurants that don't cater to kids nights. I choose places where the staff is not starving. These are choices that will reflect income. But since income doesn't enter into your thinking it doesn't matter to you.

The restaurants I work in are bar/restaurants or sports bars. Does knowing a magician is there draw kids? Definitely. But I was hired to add novelty for everyone of all ages. I'm advertised on the in-house promo TV monitors throughout the restaurant/bar or in the waiting area. I would be happy to perform or be promoted for Kid's Nights. I actually enjoy them and have become close friends with many and their families who come back regularly. It's no big deal but your statement "In the real world magicians are primarily hired for kid's night and it shouldn't be in question" just isn't true. But who really cares.... in the real world. I guess us who are posting about this topic. No one else. And I agree with Danny's post above... But again who cares except us and those who care to read these posts.

My god, I didn't say everyone does kid's night, but there are a lot more restaurants with magicians than bars with magicians. Most restaurants want the kids to be entertained and don't think it would be as entertaining for adults as much. A few enlightened managers will think magic for adult patrons, and hopefully, we can enlighten the others. Danny, you and David are not the average tablehoppers, and you know it. Stop pretending you are average Joe magician. Resort work is good if you can get it, but the only one I worked at was too long a drive, so I quit. None others within a few hours. I've worked a couple bars and clubs, but I don't like the background noise of a club and I don't like the atmosphere in most bars - or drunks.
I never said that ALL the work at restaurants was for kids, it is just in non-resort areas, which is the majority, most managers of family restaurants (which are most restaurants), think "magician for kids" before they think a magician for adults". These restaurants pay from $75-$150 for 2.5 hours. I stand by everything I said. Of course, there are exceptions for everything. We have been beating a dead horse for a while. This is my last post. Who wants the last word?? |

Why do you keep saying things that are not true. I don't believe either of us works for resorts? What is the point in saying we do restaurant magic at resorts when we don't?

I am a caterer. Usually the only time I get tipped out is at a corporate function, and that is ONLY when I am not dealing with Mrs. Penny pinching office manager cheap arse. Most private parties do not tip out. If I have to stay and serve food I add a 20% gratuity fee to cover my time/ employee time. Just responding to the op's original post.

How about just charging an appropriate fee and appreciate the occasional tip when it comes? |

Negative? These are the facts Mike. No I'm not asking/fishing for tips. Gratuity: If I have to stay to serve food I have to cover my time or an employees time. And yes believe it or not there are penny pinchers out there. I've been tipped out very heavily. I have also not been tipped at all at the same corps. Depends on who has hired me/ what dept. etc. Some managers just don't have that in their budget. Understandable, then there is the penny pinching people who are going to make X corporation great again and save them the extra $$$. . Facts only. Please don't try to make me out as a negative, ungrateful person. I was responding to the op's comment because he had mentioned caterers. You might have missed the happy face at the end of my post. . Nuthin negative here Mike. You got the wrong guy. db
And now back to the original thread...... |

For me, the less frustrating approach would be to let my client know that there is an additional charge if I have to stay to serve food. This would make the whole situation clear between me and the client which is the basis for a mutually satisfying transaction. |

If this is what you are doing and I misunderstood your post then pardon my mistake. Part of your post said you understand that you will sometimes get tipped and sometimes not and then another part of your post seems to be highly critical of someone who doesn't tip.
If we both agree that tips are optional then we are on the same page. |

Phew, I'm glad you guys don't work the UK!
In the meantime the usual patronising guff from the usual suspects makes this an interesting read, if not very helpful to the original poster. |
