If I wanted to make a long ( over 12 inches) lightweight compression spring. What kind of wire would I use and where would I buy it?

Piano wire or some call it music wire. It comes in different thickness or gauges. Grainger.com carries it, but Google piano wire and several come up.

You can buy piano wire at hobby stores like the type where you might get RC cars or planes.
