I expect some of you will have had a similar experience but I've just got to tell you this one that happened to me on Saturday night. I was booked to perform at a birthday party in a private house -cool crowd, very hip, not easy to fool- was how I read the crowd. After a bit of sponge ball/d-lite nonsense to break the ice and gain the attention of the group I was ready to deliver a card miracle. I've been working on this one for a while. I pull out one card from my top pocket hold it up, its back to the spectators, pick the alpha male in the crowd and ask him to name any card. Now, I've got a 1 in 52 chance of getting it right and usually they'll name a random card, I toss mine away without even showing it and say something like "Well, it was worth a try", which gets a laugh. Then I've got multiple outs to cover me and produce his card. Unbelievably this time there's no need, he actually says the card I'm holding! After that I have them in the palm of my hand, as far as they're concerned I can walk on water. Even a later major mess-up is passed over by someone saying "oh, It's great that sometimes you're not right. It shows you're fallible and just proves it's real magic."
I live for those moments. Anyone else had similar, too good to be true gigs? |

I asked a spec to name a card (to go in to another trick), they did, my good luck was with me, so I told them to open the case - top card was his card, and reversed in the deck - dumb luck is as magic as it gets
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

I do a bit where I correctly predict which 3 cards will be freely picked by spectators (from a shuffled deck). The revelation is quite starling and gets a good response.
But one day, the impossible happened … all three cards turned out to be Kings! That’s a miracle which will probably never be repeated. |
